Head coach Matt Nagy and General Manager Ryan Pace are out, but it won’t be a clean sweep of changes for the Bears this offseason.

Team president and CEO Ted Phillips will remain in his role. Bears chairman George McCaskey made that announcement while meeting with reporters on Wednesday afternoon and he said that Phillips will have a role in the process of finding replacements for Nagy and Pace, although he added that the new G.M. will not report to Phillips.

“The general manager will be responsible for the entire football operation,” McCaskey said, via Adam Hoge of NBCSportsChicago.com.

McCaskey said that former Colts, Bills, and Panthers G.M. Bill Polian will also be working with the team as they put together lists of candidates for both jobs. McCaskey added that he’d prefer to hire the G.M. before hiring the coach, but that it isn’t guaranteed that the team will wind up going that way.

  1. I feel like the Bears enjoy mediocrity. It reminds me of a Mom & Pop shop that only hires within their family. But loves to employ “workers” at a cheap wage.

  2. This reeks of the same “process” that brought the Bears Marc Trestman and John Fox. Do not look for Pace or Nagy’s replacements to be significantly better.

  3. Polian having anything to do with the Bears search means they’ll be back in this position much sooner than later.

  4. Dysfunctional teams do dysfunctional things–like keeping the high level team exec that screwed up multiple times with hires to get to hire the next coach /gm.

Former GMs like Polian are going to push people they like–or know–not always the best candidate. Does not sound great.

But the bears COULD hire Brian Flores now, which is probably a big improvement over the prior coach, if he can figure out his OC.

  5. I keep having hope. I should know better, by now. I really should. But I can’t help it. The clown show just continues for us Bears fans with the McCaskeys in charge.

  6. Larry, Moe and Curley are going to find the new GM and coach. Larry is the owner who knows little about football. Moe is President who knows about accounting , but not much about football. Curley is 79 years old and used to know about football, but watches on weekends and reads about football between naps. I guess that Aaron Rodgers will own the Bears for another 4 years.

  7. Clueless McCaskeys strike again. Do us all a favor and sell the team as you don’t know what you are doing.
