PFT’s 2021 NFL offensive player of the year: Cooper Kupp

The Rams have made a lot of big swings for marquee names like Matthew Stafford, Jalen Ramsey, Von Miller, and Odell Beckham in recent years, but one of their most significant acquisitions came with a lot less fanfare.

Wide receiver Cooper Kupp arrived in the third round of the 2017 draft and that’s proven to be one of the biggest steals in recent draft history. Kupp steadily became one of the most productive receivers in the league over his first few seasons and his production exploded to historic levels in 2021.

Kupp became the fourth player since the NFL-AFL merger to lead the league in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns in the same season by posting 145 catches for 1,947 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns. Michael Thomas is the only player to catch more passes and Calvin Johnson is the only player who has ever gained more yards than Kupp in a single season.

Kupp may have fallen just short of setting those records, but his season still ranks as one of the most productive in NFL history. That’s why he is PFT’s choice as the NFL’s offensive player of the year.

That award has often gone to the most prolific non-quarterbacks in recent seasons, although a couple of quarterbacks also factored into consideration and there will be much more discussion about Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady when we reveal our vote for the league’s most valuable player later this week.

Colts running back Jonathan Taylor joined Kupp as the top position player candidates this season. Taylor led the league with 1,811 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns while tying Chargers running back Austin Ekeler with 20 total touchdowns.

Those numbers make a strong case for Taylor and the race between the two players was as close as could be heading into Week 18. Kupp had seven catches for 118 yards and a touchdown in a close loss to the 49ers that only impacted the Rams’ playoff seed while Taylor getting stuffed on fourth-and-one at the goal line in the Colts’ shocking 26-11 loss weighed into his final argument for the prize.

As the saying goes, football is a game of inches and Kupp nosed past Taylor at the line to take our prize for offensive excellence this season.

  1. Question: Who is the better receiver or has/had the better career? Cooper Kupp or Keyshawn Johnson?

  2. I always feel like the OPOY award should go to an actual ball-handler type position (WR, TE, RB). These guys are the true athletes, the ‘offense’ behind all the pretty accurate throws that quarterbacks make. They’re the ones actually advancing the ball down the field. This award should always go to the ball-handler with the best combination of yards from scrimmage (total) and touchdowns.

  3. It’s not just Kupp. Rams have had a bunch of excellent mid-late round raft picks: Jordan Fuller, Greg Gaines, Sebastian Joseph-Day, David Edwards, Brian Allen, Ben Skowronek… you get the idea. Van Jefferson is better than about 5 receivers drafted ahead of him as well.

  4. If Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady are the leaders for MVP vote, why would they not also be the leaders for OPOY? Odd trend that OPOY has become the “non-QB” award by default.

I get it, MVP = most valuable to your team. But then what does OPOY stand for? Best statistics? That would be a shame. But regardless, hasn’t Tom Brady put up some record breaking stats this year?

The only stat Brady cares about is #8

MVP is a “whole team” award whereas OPOY and DPOY are subsets of a whole team. One award limit per player means you will always have 3 different players awarded.

  10. Thank you PFT for recognizing Kupp. Earlier today Jerry Rice was on with Lekas and Weis and Kupp was never mentioned. Unbelievable.

  11. If you’re a young receiver short on physical gifts, do everything this guy does and you’ll be good. He’s mastered the NFL with smarts and wiggle

  12. Shouldn’t Antonio Brown, aka AB, be the offensive person of the year.

He offended every Team he has played for……….

Since MVP always goes to an offensive player anyway, are we just saying OPOY is actually “Second best offensive player” award?

  14. What Kupp has done, with every DB on the field trying to cover him, has been amazing. And all of these media talking heads don’t even put him in the top 5 of receivers THIS season. Glad to see him get this respect. He’s earned it.

  15. If Taylor willed his team (and inept QB) into the postseason in the final week, we might be having a different conversation right now. He didn’t. Which is more on coaching than anything. Kupp deserves the award. And to be considered the best receiver in football. I understand Adams is more “physically gifted,” but that doesn’t make him the better receiver. Kelvin Benjamin was also more physically gifted than Kupp…

  16. Kupp is a freak, wouldn’t be surprised if he got it. Taylor and others are also great players though.

  17. I’m not sure why Brady didn’t get MVP LAST year. In a single season, he turned a franchise that hadn’t been to the playoffs for 13 years into a super bowl winner

    ==========

    2019 Bucs – #3 offense, #29 defense
    2020 Bucs – #3 offense, #8 defense

Brady turned them around? Looks like the defense made a big leap as well..

  19. Kupp vs Davante Adams – Last 3 Seasons Receptions – Kupp: 331, Adams: 321 Yards – Kupp: 4082, Adams: 3924 Rec / Gm – Kupp: 6.1, Adams: 7.6 Touchdowns – Kupp: 66, Adams: 59

Not sure where you got these TD numbers, in the last 3 seasons Adams has 321 receptions 3,924 yards and 34 touchdowns despite missing 6 games. Kupp has 331 receptions and 4082 yards with 29 touchdowns and missed only one game.

  20. Could MVP realistically be anyone else other than Tom Brady. At this point, the Bucs have the same record as the Packers (can say Rodgers led his team to NFL’s best record anymore) and 44 year old Tom Brady led in all the key QB categories…
