Bill Belichick on facing Bills a third time: We’re starting from scratch

The Bills and Patriots are set to square off for the third time in the Wild Card round of the playoffs and it will be their third meeting in a relatively short period of time.

New England won 14-10 on a blustery night in Buffalo in Week 13 and the Bills got a win back by beating the Patriots 33-21 in Week 16. That makes the two teams very familiar with one another as they prepare for Saturday night’s elimination game.

On Wednesday, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was asked at his press conference about his approach to a third game against the same team in the same season. Belichick said he is “sure there’ll be wrinkles” that the teams didn’t see in the first two matchups this year because “each game has its own unique circumstances and matchups.”

“It’s similar to [playing a team] twice,” Belichick said. “Look, I think the big thing any time you play a team a second or third time, or whatever it is, it’s a new game. We’re starting from scratch. Don’t think or assume the game is going to go like another one did. Be ready to play it out, play it as you see it, and make the necessary adjustments and decisions that come up in this game. Whatever happened in some other game happened. We learned something from that, but we have to play this game as it plays out. It’ll be different than any other game. As long as we do that, we’ll be OK.”

Weather played a big role in the Patriots’ first trip to Buffalo and it’s supposed to be very cold on Saturday night, but there won’t be the same winds that affected game plans the last time around. That alone guarantees that both sides will have to find a new approach against a familiar foe.

  1. As giants DC he shut Washington out in an NFC championship game which was their third meeting that year.

  2. Without Brady to lean on and bail him out, BB will need to have the defense ready to win the game

  3. If the Pats play anything like they have the last few weeks (except against the Jags), they will not go beyond this game. They need to improve all 3 phases in a very short time.

  4. They have to pressure Josh Allen this time around. It’s time for Matt Judon to earn his contract. For the Patriots to have any chance to upset the Bills, they need to do to Josh Allen what the Bucs did to Mahomes in the SB.

  5. IMO The Pats have difficulty overcoming a deficit. They must score first. The conservative run approach doesn’t allow come backs.

  6. I don’t think playing against Billy B when he gets a chance to address what he should have done differently is going to be pleasant, win or lose.

  7. Patriots fans always say to Bills fans, “Belichick is in your heads.”

    To which I say: Yep.

He’s good. He’s very, very good.

  8. if it is a low scoring, close game, advantage is to the Patriots. If it is high scoring, the Bills will run away with it

  9. It’s a rare feeling to go into the playoffs as underdogs, as a Patriots fan.

Refreshing. Hope Mac takes some useful experiences from this game.

As much as I’d like this to be true, I have a feeling that Buffalo wins the game.

Pats havent been playing well as of late, Buffalo has. And Mac playing in 5 degree weather for the first time – i just dont think he will adjust well…i think he fumbles or throws a bad pick that leads to a Bills score. Hope Im wrong.

  12. Buffalo should win this game. On paper, they’re the better team, and playing at home. I’ll be rooting for my Pats, but I won’t be holding my breath that they’ll pull this one out.
