Tom Brady continues to re-write the NFL postseason record book in 2022

Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady already owns some of the most significant NFL postseason records, and he’ll add to those records when the Bucs host the Eagles on Sunday.

Here are a few of the postseason records that Brady owns, and some notes on how far everyone else in the league is from equaling Brady’s records:

Games played: Brady will appear in his 46th career postseason game on Sunday. His former kicker Adam Vinatieri is in second place all time, having appeared in 32 career postseason games. Another former Brady kicker, Stephen Gostkowski, is tied with Jerry Rice for third with 29 games.

Games started: Brady has started all of his postseason games, so he’ll extend that record to 46 as well. Kickers aren’t considered starters, so Rice is next with 29 starts.

Games as winning quarterback: Brady has 34 postseason wins. Joe Montana is second with 16. In third place, Terry Bradshaw, John Elway and Peyton Manning are in a three-way tie with 14 postseason wins, and Ben Roethlisberger can also earn his 14th career postseason win if the Steelers beat the Chiefs on Sunday.

Passes thrown: Brady has thrown 1,764 passes in the postseason. Peyton Manning, with 1,027 postseason passes, is the only other quarterback to throw more than 1,000.

Passes completed: Brady has completed 1,106 passes in the playoffs. Peyton Manning completed 649, and no one else even has 500 career completions in the postseason.

Passing yards: Brady is the all-time leader with 12,449 career postseason passing yards. Peyton Manning is second with 7,339, followed by Brett Favre with 5,885.

Passing touchdowns: Brady has 73 career postseason touchdown passes. Joe Montana and Aaron Rodgers are tied for second with 45.

Brady will keep adding to his records on Sunday, and maybe for quite a few postseason games after that.

  1. TB12 has 83 tds in the postseason……73 with the Patriots and 10 with the Bucs…,,and counting…..hope he can do more………

  2. It’s really unfathomable how some still try to force a certain media darling from Indianapolis and Denver into the GOAT conversation.

  3. He has 273 total career wins, regular season and playoffs, and an outside shot at 300.

His accomplishments will likely be unsurpassable.

  4. Brady has broken several records this year, and is on track to break a couple next year – the most noteworthy being the 100 year old record for oldest quarterback ever to start a game, set by John Nesser in 1921 (and there’s a really interesting story behind this one).

Brady currently is 7th on the list for most career regular season appearances at 318 (behind 5 kickers and a punter, and I count George Blanda as a kicker, since Blanda only started one of his final 126 appearances as a quarterback). On the combined regular and postseason lists, Brady has passed Blanda and is now in 4th place, behind only Morten Andersen, Adam Vinatieri and Gery Anderson, at 363.

  5. Impressive. Brady is up there with Starr, Graham, and Baugh as one of the all time greats at the QB position.

  6. Impressive, for sure.
However, many of those records are purely a consequence of having played so many years, and on a successful team.
His longevity generates a great deal of those records.

  7. Clearly, the only way to explain the utter dominance of this particular player is that he’s on somewhat of an extended lucky streak since 2001, is good at only completing wide open 2 yard screens, and is a system quarterback.

  8. Respect the GOAT! It is sad when I hear the hatred spewed towards Tom Brady as it is more about not having him doing the great things he does on their favorite team!

  9. Here come the but, but, buts….

For the haters – Brady also has the most interceptions and incomplete passes as well as being the most sacked QB in the postseason. That should make you feel better.

  10. Impressive. Brady is up there with Starr, Graham, and Baugh as one of the all time greats at the QB position.
    ————————

Impressive you take three QBs from over 50 years ago.

  11. “However, many of those records are purely a consequence of having played so many years, and on a successful team.“

    —————
That Brady sure can pick ‘em – hitched his wagon to a juggernaut and rode a wave he had nothing to do with. Then all you have to do is play 20+ years as an invited member and *boom*, you’re sitting there with double the post season wins of the best that ever played and about a hundred other records.

For the life of me, I don’t know why more people haven’t thought to follow this simple equation prior.

  12. At some point this Brady breaking records talk has to also be associated with him playing 60 years in the NFL. I mean yes absolutely he is playing well but when you play 4 or 5 or 6 seasons (minimum) more then the other high profile QBs you will inevitably break records right??

  13. Tom Brady is a once-in-history freak. His drive, commitment, focus and will to win, over 22 years and counting, have produced a record of achievement that is and will be unassailable. He’s not only the best of all time, he will be the best for all time.

  14. IF Rodgers played in as many games as Brady, Rodgers would own all the records. Brady’s biggest asset is longevity. I mean Peyton broke most of the passing records in 17 years.

  15. He has 273 total career wins, regular season and playoffs, and an outside shot at 300.

His accomplishments will likely be unsurpassable

    …………………

TB12 actually has 277 wins (243 Regular and 34 postseason)……………2 more seasons and he could do it I hope……………

  16. He has 273 total career wins, regular season and playoffs, and an outside shot at 300.

His accomplishments will likely be unsurpassable.

    18-game seasons are coming.

And they’ll find more ways to protect billion dollar QBs.

  17. mean Peyton broke most of the passing records in 17 year

He also played 95 percent of his career home games in PERFECT conditions (dome)

2 of the top 3 in passing yards are some QBs

Yes that helps passing stats. Brady did it playing his entire career outdoors.

  18. The ones just brushing these stats/records aside cause Brady has played for so much longer than the other qbs/players fail to realize that’s a record and accomplishment as well. No one is preventing these other qbs from playing this long yet none of them have yet. And Brady is still leading the league over the younger qbs in statistical categories as he’s done this season. His longevity might be his most impressive trait as it’s what allows him to continue to perform and achieve all the other records.

    ===============================================

What a lot of the “oh it’s just how long he played” naysayers always seem to want to ignore is the simple truth that an nfl qb doesn’t start games unless he’s good enough to start – meaning he’s better than any of the other options out there. You don’t make playoff records unless you’re a good enough qb to lead your team into the playoffs. Brady’s been “good enough” to get his teams into the postseason in 19 of the 21 years he’s started.

Tampa Bay brought him in because they thought he was the best qb option available to them, and – guess what, they were right (and a lot of other teams who didn’t pursue him were wrong)!

  20. Brady has broken several records this year
    ————————————————

Like Jerry Rice at the end of his career, Brady breaks records every single play.

  21. To the individuals who maintain he has broken the records mentioned due to how long he has played…that’s the point ! His longevity ! He’s broken those records BECAUSE HE CAN STILL
PLAY AT A HIGH LEVEL. Those other players were done. One in particular was WELL done.

He’s the best football player who ever lived.

    We all know it.
Only some of us are just willing to admit it.

  22. skcusoirolf says:
“but when you play 4 or 5 or 6 seasons (minimum) more then the other high profile QBs you will inevitably break records right??”

That’s not the point. You have to play at a high enough level to be a starter, not just a stats padders. The fact that the manlead his teammates to win multiple Super Bowls in his 40’s is a testament to his greatness.

All except the most important record of all.

And he ain’t close. Brady plays big in big games and well…..

  24. And he still owns the AFC East

Thats like owning Baltic Avenue and Mediterranean Avenue in Monopoly.

  25. A couple people here don’t see to understand the difference of career stats versus career POSTSEASON stats. The QB has to WIN a lot playoff games in order to amass big career playoff numbers like these. If you think that’s just a consequence of playing for a long time and not at all due to prowess, then you’re ignorant. If it was so easy to win in the playoffs, how come Peyton Manning struggled to win .500 of his?

  26. minime says:

    That’s cause he won’t retire.
    ——————————————————————
Longevity certainly helps with the records cited, but the reason for his longevity is because he keeps taking his teams to the Super Bowl and winning.

  27. IF Rodgers played in as many games as Brady, Rodgers would own all the records. Brady’s biggest asset is longevity. I mean Peyton broke most of the passing records in 17 years.
    ——————

Rogers has been in the NFC his entire career and has a 10-9 record against the NFC in the playoffs. Brady has been in the NFC for two years and has a 9-3 record against the NFC in the playoffs. That longevity thing you are talking about sure does not work in your favor.

  28. In my opinion, the most amazing about Brady is his ability to stay healthy, aside from a fluke knee injury 13 seasons ago. He never takes a big hit, he always seems to know where the potential big hit is coming from.

I think it is impossible to compare players from different eras. And if I was starting a Team in 2000 I would still start it with Manning, but it is hard to argue, based on results that Brady is not the best QB of this era.

Aaron Rodgers has 11 post-season wins. Joe Flacco has 10. Brady has 34.

It didn’t take Peyton 17 years to attain his 9 one-and-dones …..a record that will likely stand forever

  31. Stat padder.
Now and when he played in NE.
Play the AFC east twice a year and you too can be a mediocre qb with all of the stat records.

What Brady accomplished in the regular season in 21 years, Manning accomplished in 17 years. That is a fact.

  34. These are postseason records, so the “he played in a soft AFCE” argument is even dumber than usual. Here’s a hint: if that argument held any water, Brady wouldn’t have any postseason records because he would have been one and done almost every time. Instead, that was Peyton.

  35. In all fairness to any athlete out there, if they hold any records due to longevity in the sport, kudos to them for being able to do so. If an athlete chooses to leave the sport earlier than others, thus preventing them from holding such records, it’s on them. Who’s to say in 10 or 15 years from now the NFL won’t go to a 20 game season, in which case all current day records will either be demolished or on the other hand, possibly stand for eternity eg. The undefeated Dolphins.

The MOST impressive of them all:
Played in 10 Super Bowls and won 7 of them!

    _________________________

Does this include all the Spygate super bowls?

    #tainted Super Bowls:

    Rodgers – 0

    Manning – 0

    Brady – at least 3-4

  37. Actually, Peyton played 136 games outdoors (out of 265).

And Brady has played 20 in a dome (out of 314)

  38. Rodgers isn’t even top 10 of all time. It becomes especially true when we look at fourth quarter comebacks, game-winning drives and wins against teams with great defenses. The top ten includes Brady, Joe Montana, Peyton Manning, Otto Graham, Bart Starr, Dan Marino, Johnny Unitas, Brett Favre, John Elway and Terry Bradshaw. Then, there’s Drew Brees to think about.

  39. OMG! Now his detractors are saying he’s good because he’s playing so long. Lol
The dude is an enigma. Has he had luck and good fortune, of course he has, but he still makes everyone around him better. The Bucs still have a shot this season because of the GOAT. NEVER doubt the GOAT. Don’t hate, appreciate.

  40. Brady has been to the Super Bowl 10 times. Think about that. That means nearly 1 out of 5 Super Bowls ever had Tom Brady playing. That’s crazy!

  41. When you play 5 times longer than the average career of an NFL QB, you are bound to break some records. BUT…the fact that he has been ABLE to play 5 times longer makes him very special indeed.

  42. And, Brady will join Bradshaw soon as being the only quarterbacks in NFL history to repeat twice.

  43. Not to ‘BAG’ on the Giants BUT 2 of the 3 Super Bowls Brady lost was to the Eli Manning Giants who have been one of the worst teams since that time…

This is the most important stat and accomplishment. Meanwhile Aaron has been to one. If he makes it the next nine seasons he will then equal Tom Brady

  45. People saying he’s simply played a long time… y’all need to look at his winning percentage. It’s about 76% for regular season. Playoffs? 75%.

  46. And, Brady will join Bradshaw soon as being the only quarterbacks in NFL history to repeat twice.
    ==========

    Bart Starr repeated and 3-peated..

  47. If you do the math, Rodgers would trounce Brady in terms of regular season and playoff yards and TDs if he played in the same number of games. Really, Brady himself said that Rodgers is so much more talented than he is. Who is to argue with that?

  48. Bart Starr repeated and 3-peated..

    ________________________________

I’m talking about this century. I don’t care how many teams repeated in leagues with only eight to twelve teams. Do you realize how many championships Brady or the Patriots would have won if their only competition was the AFC?

  49. How does Starr make your top 10 list then, if you intend to discredit his most important achievement?

  50. Manning amassed his 71,940 yards in 266 games. Brady broke it in 270 games. It did take Brady 19 more games to break Manning’’s 539 TDs. Not sure how that equates to 4 more seasons of to break Manning’s records.

  51. I’m not taking away what Starr accomplished in his era of football. He should be on anyone’s top ten list because he dominated when he played. But, it’s definitely much more difficult to repeat in the salary cap era of a 32 team league. What Bradshaw and Brady did should be held on a higher pedestal.

Less teams, less players in the League = better teams, stronger competition
