Bill Belichick: Josh Allen is “a problem” attacking the defense

Patriots coach Bill Belichick is preparing to face Bills quarterback Josh Allen for the third time in 40 days on Saturday, and he’s expecting a challenge.

Belichick broke down the Bills’ offense on the Patriots’ YouTube channel and he described the touchdown pass Allen threw to Stefon Diggs on Sunday as a remarkable play by both of them.

“Allen flushes out of the pocket and breaks a tackle,” Belichick said. “For Allen even to get it off here as he’s being tackled and knocked out of bounds is one thing, and it looks like it’s almost impossible for Diggs to catch this ball in bounds, but he does. . . . That’s the level of execution Buffalo works with, great quarterback, great receiver.”

Belichick then broke down an Allen scramble later in the game.

“A lot of magic here with Allen, got to be ready for everything,” Belichick said. “Really running and attacking the defense, this guy, he’s a problem.”

Whether Belichick’s defense can solve that problem may determine whether the Patriots’ season ends on Saturday night.

  1. Starting to wonder if the Pats went all vanilla knowing they were going to face Buffalo again.

They had no idea in week 16 that they would play the Bills again? Why on earth would BB coach “vanilla” with the division on the line? Fact of the matter is the defense was embarrassed. They played way too soft in coverage and were totally undisciplined in their pass rush.

Exactly. You think this happens again?

Extremely doubtful. If Miami beats the Titans in week 17 – they are in and the Patriots are out.

No reason to hold anything back.

  5. When Bill won his first SB ring with the Giants, he enticed the QB to hand off more by dropping more defensive players into coverage than any coach has done before. He did the same thing against the Rams “greatest show on turf”. I imagine he will have a similar game plan: let them run for 150 yards, make the passing game more difficult than they’ve ever seen. This keeps it a lower scoring game that raises the importance of offensive efficiency, special teams, and turnovers. The higher scoring the game is, the more it favors Buffalo

  6. Mobile, athletic QBs have given Belichick’s defense problems in the past. Cam Newton whose younger version played similar to Josh Allen, beat Belichick twice. Colin Kaepernick beat Belichick. Recently Lamar Jackson and Russell Wilson also beat Belichick. Now it’s Josh Allen. So Belichick will have his hands full on Saturday.

Josh Allen sucks in cold weather, though. Go look at his numbers. I know it sounds odd as he played for Wyoming and plays in Buffalo, but even last week vs the lowly Jets he struggled at home.

He’s as much a pristine weather QB as Peyton Manning was.

The deeper ball won’t be there and runs a ton still. If NE takes away the quick passes this time instead of being worried about the mid range and deep balls, and actually hold their lanes, with the one off stunts and blitzes to attack Allen, that can do it.

Allen wants to throw mid/deep or he tucks and runs. Why you’d want your 40 mil per year QB running that much is a whole other story.

  8. The Patriots currently have three active DB’s on their roster due to COVID restrictions. Covering every WR in a 4 wide look is going to leave Knox open, or Singletary.
