Cowboys agree to new contract with VP of player personnel Will McClay

USA TODAY Sports

Cowboys vice president of player personnel Will McClay’s name has come up in conjunction with General Manager openings in past years, but he hasn’t been mentioned as a candidate for any of this year’s vacancies.

McClay’s not going to be a late addition to the list either. According to multiple reports, McClay has agreed to a new deal with the Cowboys.

McClay joined the Cowboys personnel department in 2009 after coaching in the Arena League and has moved his way up to the top job in the department not held by a member of the Jones family. Jerry and Stephen Jones have an outsize role in decisions, but McClay’s work has been highly regarded for many years. That’s particularly true of his work scouting draft prospects.

McClay will now continue working to bolster the Cowboys roster while the teams in need of General Managers look elsewhere to fill those voids.

  1. “He’s on the ground floor with us every single day,” cornerback Jourdan Lewis said Wednesday. “He’s at practice every day and I mean we always joke back and forth. He’s an amazing mind. He knows football. He knows people. That’s one of the good qualities that he has. He’s a great judge of people and a great judge or character. He gets the right guy in here like you see”. This will be McClays 20th season with the Cowboys. Think it’s safe to say, he ain’t going any where

  2. Huge part of the Cowboys success! Great news! Now all Jerry needs to do is write Dan Quinn a blank check to stick around and continue to develop an up and coming defense.

  3. The secret and becoming not so secret reason for Dallas amazing drafts the last few years. I don’t think he really wants to run a team though. He’s happy hanging back and letting Jerry and Stephen take all the credit while he cashes those checks that keep getting fatter every year

  4. Will McClay is easily the most valuable member of the Cowboys front office. Dallas’ draft results since he’s been part of the process speak for themselves. I’m glad he’s not looking to move on.

Agreed. Pay Quinn like he’s a head coach and make his situation in Dallas too good to leave. Quinn has already experienced the stress that comes with the wrong situation.

  6. Dallas’s front office relies on two key people. McClay is the scouting mastermind who has helped the team drafted very efficiently for about a dozen years now, and every since Stephen Jones also found more influence with his father the team began to following longtime best practices used for years by teams such as the Steelers, Ravens, and Packers to build sustained competitors (those best practices largely revolve around restraint from flashy moves). Jones is the one who saves the Cowboys from Jerry Jones’s worst impulses and guides the roster strategy, while McClay is the one who understands football talent.
