Texans quickly interview Brian Flores for head-coaching vacancy

On Thursday, the Texans fired coach David Culley. On Friday, they interviewed a candidate to replace him.

The team announced that former Dolphins coach Brian Flores interviewed for the position on Friday. Flores also interviewed for the vacancy in Chicago on Friday, four days after his surprise firing in Miami.

He’s the first candidate to sit for the job. Along with current Patriots defensive assistant Jared Mayo, Flores is regarded as one of the top candidates for the Houston job. With a third opportunity to be an NFL head coach hardly guaranteed, Flores needs to make his second stop count.

  1. Texans are in a rebuilding mode with unclarity around QB situation. Brian was involved in a Dolphins rebuild and just when he was turning it around, he got fired. Brian is a good coach and it would be a disappointment to see him join this org with so many questions, given an opportunity.

Brian is a good coach and he has proved it and should take time and weigh in his options. I am sure he will get more opportunities. Not rush it because this could be another disaster in making for his career as a head coach.

  2. Unless they gove him ownership stake or $20m a year, he should wait it out. Go to LV if they don’t promote the interim. Go to Chicago or Minnesota and start off with many advantages over the Texans roster. If I was his agent I’d demand the moon.

  3. Whoever is lucky enough to hire Flores is getting a great coach and made a wise decision. He is a good hire.

  4. SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPRISE! Golly, had no idea in God’s green earth anything like that would ever happen!

    (Sarcasm)

  5. Well, the McNair family is on the brink of finally achieving their eternal goal of having a Patriots trifecta – HC, GM, VPFO – leading the Texans. Let’s hope that it works but I have the feeling that this EB soap opera is really just starting.

  6. Being the head coach for Houston hardly qualifies as an ‘opportunity’. He’ be better off holding out for a better team to hook up with.

  7. Well I’ll give the Texans front office some credit, they didn’t wait until next week to interview Flores

  8. You can bet one of the questions in the interview was how much the Dolphins were willing to give up for Deshaun Watson.

  9. So Flores had his interviews with Chicago and Houston on the same day? Hope they were zoom calls if this is true

  10. Coach, you don’t know me from Adam, but DO NOT take this job. You did a great job in Miami. You will have your choice of places to go.

  11. If you are being recruited for a head coaching position in the NFL and your options include Houston and literally any other team, if you possess even an ounce of sanity, you pick any other team.

  12. I doubt seriously if he will allow the GM to call down during the game to give him strategy. Texans ownership is nonexistent and team management over the last several years proves it.

  13. I think you mean Brian Flores interviews the Texans to see if they are worthy.
I hope the Vikes interview him. At least he’ll know you get eight years of mediocrity before you get fired here!

  14. Why would he even interview with this joke of a franchise? If he thought the Dolphins were dysfunctional. He hasn’t seen anything yet. I understand there are only 32 jobs, but he will get an offer from a better team.

  15. Bill Belichek coaching tree record.
    Jim Bates – 3-4
    Romeo Crennel – 32-63
    Rod Dowhower – 5-24
    Brian Flores – 24-25
    Al Groh – 9-7
    Hal Hunter – 0-1
    Joe Judge – 10-23
    Eric Mangini – 33-47
    Josh McDaniels – 11-17
    Bill O’Brien – 52-48
    Matt Patricia – 13-29
    Nick Saban – 15-17
    Jim Schwartz – 29-51
    Rick Venturi – 2-17
    Stop hiring these guys

  16. Oh God. A note attached to a brick and lobbed through a window would be less obvious! If Flores has any brains, he will avoid the clown show like the plague.

  17. Still scratching my head, wondering why the Dolphins fired him. Oh well, on to Houston! Or Chicago. Or…

  18. I think he will be offered the Texans job, as the Bears really need to wait and hire a GM before the HC.

  19. Flores is such an overrated candidate. His team got beat like a drum against the Titans so the winning streak against the cupcakes didn’t mean much.

  20. I hope for the Texan fans that Flores becomes their HC and that Watson remains with the team. I also hope for the Texan fans that the current management is released and the team is sold to a worthy owner.

  21. I personally would avoid the Texans if I was Flores. He was just fired from a situation where the GM was the majority of the problem and the owner was a blind fool, so why get in to it again with another rebuild to deal with too?

Flores seems like the type of coach who would fit best with the Bears or if that wasn’t possible, go with the Vikes. The fans would give you fair chance in either place to succeed. If you fail on your own, that’s on you, but given a good GM to work with he should be better than his record in Miami was.

  22. I love the “Flores turned things around narrative.” The ‘Fins hadn’t won a playoff game in centuries. Flores gets here and didn’t win a playoff game. In a must win game last year against the Bills he loses 56-26. In this year’s must-win game he loses 34-3. What exactly did he turn around? “He won 7 games in a row.” He also lost 7 games in a row. The ‘Fins didn’t have a QB before he got there. They still don’t have a QB. What did he turn around?

That’s cold. The Truth but cold. Easterby and Caserio think they can turn the Texans into a cheap knockoff of the Patriots and people won’t notice just how fake they are.

  24. Flores is a good coach. Why would he even interview for that job? It’s a road to nowhere.

  25. He interviewed for 2 teams yet they didn’t hire him. Why? They could have right away without going thru formalities with other coaches. I’m guessing maybe he does come off in a wrong way

  26. Chances of Watson staying with the Texans – even with Flores as HC – are zero. If local news reports are anywhere near accurate, he and McNair actively despise each other (I tend to agree with both of them on this point).

  27. Texans hierarchy seems to be a snake pit. I would steer clear if I were Flores. I imagine he’s got to be near the top of the list of HC candidates. I’m hoping for Vikings gig if I’m him. Pretty solid, stable organization. Decent talent base to start.

    ********

The answer to that one was “Nothing”

And Flores didn’t (wisely) want Watson in MIA why would he now want the headache in Houston? Maybe he said to Houston ‘I’m interested in the challenge but only if I don’t have Watson as a QB.”

  29. So…are the Texans interested in Flores, or are they just trying to get the Rooney rule out of the way before they interview the coaches that they really want?

In any case……why would any coach want to work for that hot mess?

Good coach… yet he coached one more regular season game, which resulted in only one more win through the last three seasons then the previous coach who was fired after three seasons.

  31. If he was willing to accept the job, then the Texans should question his judgment and not hire him. /s

  32. Caserio has the Texans going in the right direction, just look at the 2021.

Davis Mills could prove to be the steal of the 2021 draft, drafted in the 3rd round, #67 overall. Mills 11 games and was the 2nd best QB of all QB’s drafted in 2021. Mills had far less talent than all of the other rookie QB’s in the 2021 class, yet he out played all of them with the exception of Mac Jones. Swap Mac Jones and Davis Mills and IMHO, Mills would have had better stats than Jones.

Nico Collins in limited action had 446 yards with 33 receptions and 1 TD. Collins will be a solid #2-3 WR who was drafted in the 3rd round.

Bevin Jordan only saw action in 9 games, yet he scored 3 TD’s on 20 receptions. Jordan should be the Texans starter next year, and should be a 6 to 10 TD TE for years to come.

Garret Wallow was mainly a Special Teams player, however in his 2 starts he flew around and made plays. Wallow drafted in the 5th round will continue to excell on Special Teams.

Roy Lopez was drafted in the 6th round and started 15 of 16 games and played in 46% of snaps. Yes, the Texans DL needs help, however Lopez will be in the Texans DL rotation, which is a great value for a 6th rounder.

The Texans are headed in the right direction and any HC candidate will have more to work with via the 2022 draft. If Watson get his issues resolved, the Texans will have even more draft capitol. Rumor has it the Texans will trade Tunsil for a 1st in this year’s draft an even if the Texans only get 2 – 1st round picks in 2022 draft for Watson, plus their own 1st round pick, they would have 4 – 1st round picks in the 2022 draft.

Flores would be an excellent choice, especially if they promote Pep Hamilton to OC and let him continue his work with Mills development.

There are a lot of moving parts with the Texans, and the entire NFL. Time will tell, however the Texans have a path to regain relevance faster than many folks think!

  33. Why does every keep saying don’t go to a rebuild. Every team hiring a head coach is on some form of rebuild. Duh!

  34. Remember when Miami fired Adam Gase and the Jets scooped him up. We all watched how that turned out. Now Miami had fired Flores and everyone is trying to scoop him up…….Buyer Beware.

  35. IMHO, If I were the best available coach and had a choice of the available jobs right now, I think I’d rank them as follows:

    Raiders
    Broncos
    Vikings
    Jaguars
    Giants
    Bears
    Texans

Why would he kill his career by choosing the Texans when he could coach decent teams?
