PFT’s NFL 2022 divisional round picks

Six postseason games down, seven to go.

MDS won the wild-card round with a 5-1 record. I went 4-2.

This week, we disagree on one of the four games.

For the year, I’m 181-96-1. MDS is 177-100-1.

For this week’s takes and picks, scroll away.

Bengals (+3.5) at Titans

MDS’s take: The Titans are healthier right now than they were during the regular season, and I’m expecting them to play one of their best games and remind everyone that the road to the Super Bowl in the AFC goes through Tennessee.

MDS’s pick: Titans 27, Bengals 20.

Florio’s take: Derrick Henry makes a huge difference for a team that went 6-3 without him. The Cincinnati offense lacked the killer instinct on Saturday against the Raiders, allowing Las Vegas to hang around for far too long. While the Bengals may indeed be a Super Bowl contender in 2022, it feels like they’ve reached the end of the road. The Titans, in contrast, are just getting started.

Florio’s pick: Titans 24, Bengals 17.

49ers (+6) at Packers

MDS’s take: The Packers benefited from the bye week while the 49ers played a tough, physical game in Dallas that left them banged up. Playing Saturday on a short work week, the 49ers will struggle.

MDS’s pick: Packers 30, 49ers 17.

Florio’s take: One team’s quarterback is Aaron Rodgers. The other team’s quarterback is Jimmy Garoppolo. Need I say more? (I will anyway.) San Francisco’s defense will have a hard time keeping Rodgers from torching it, especially if Nick Bosa (concussion) can’t go. Rodgers has limited shots at winning another Super Bowl. This may be his best, and possibly his last, as a Packer.

Florio’s pick: Packers 27, 49ers 20.

Rams (+2.5) at Buccaneers

MDS’s take: Both of these teams won blowouts last week, but this should be a hard-fought game. I trust Tom Brady in the fourth quarter of a close playoff game more than I trust Matthew Stafford.

MDS’s pick: Buccaneers 28, Rams 24.

Florio’s take: It won’t be easy for the Bucs. They’ll need to commit to the run in order to set up the pass. Throw too much, and Tom Brady may soon be putting the ball up for grabs in order to avoid getting his 44-year-old body banged around. If the Rams can’t run effectively, quarterback Matthew Stafford may eventually make a fatal mistake.

Florio’s pick: Buccaneers 23, Ram 17.

Bills (+1.5) at Chiefs

MDS’s take: The best game of the divisional round features two quarterbacks who were outstanding in the wild card round. I trust Patrick Mahomes a little bit more than Josh Allen to play that well again in the divisional round, so I’ll pick the Chiefs.

MDS’s pick: Chiefs 31, Bills 28.

Florio’s take: This one has game of the year potential, with the Bills ready to exorcise more demons and the Chiefs potentially on their heels as they try to slow down Buffalo’s offense. Crazy as it sounds, Kansas City should consider slowing things down and limiting possessions in order to avoid letting the Bills fast-break their way to 40 points.

Florio’s pick: Bills 41, Chiefs 28.

  1. Niners own the pack in the playoffs and they’ll come out of the bye flat. 31 – 24 Niners.

  2. Loving these Titan tropes. Nevermind the oft forgotten narrative, Zac Taylor coached Tannehill for 8 years, that’s not insignificant. I’ll bet on Burrow.

  3. The game is in Green Bay…enough said. Pack will win. Is this the game Brady finally shows his age….I believe so. I’m still
trying to figure out how the Titans got the number seed in the AFC.
Anyway the Bengals will prevail. The Bills are just better than
    the Chiefs.

  4. I cannot figure out how the Titans even win games. Bengals, Pack, and Chiefs. Rams vs Bucs. Lesser of two evils. Rams win or die by the blitz. Go with the Rams.

  5. When the Rams can run the ball we can beat anyone. Brady is missing two of his favorite WR targets. The Rams d-line is built to attack QBs, but even when Brady gets hit frequently he still plays well – except this week. Rams win this one. But winning another playoff game won’t silence the people who talk trash about Stafford.

  6. The only thing I want to see this weekend is Andy Reid, Mahomes, Kelce and the overrated Tyrann Mathieu eat an L.

  7. Thanks Florio! You keep picking against the Chiefs. How did that work out for you last week? LOL

  8. Titans in a squeaker 24-20
    Bills outduel Chiefs 31-27
9ers make Aaron choke, again 34-24
    Bucs shear the Rams 23-17

  9. Chiefs defence isn’t good. Look at their games. Only good offense they stopped was Dallas. Every other good offense feasted all year.

  10. This is Buffalo’s opportunity to make a name for itself and in the process replace the Pats as undisputed kings of the AFC north..

  11. Can you really blame people picking against the Packers? If they don’t lose to the Niners again at home, they’ll lose to the Bucs again at home. Pick one. That’s the legacy of Rodgers.

  12. All home teams will win this weekend. Bills won their Superbowl last weekend. Although I’d live the Niners to upset the Pack, Jimmy G will fall flat. Titans with or without Henry are still the better overall team and for sure the better coach. Titans power to a win. Tom Brady leads his team to yet another conference championship game to the amazement of no one, #GOAT.

  13. All home teams will win this weekend. Bills won their Superbowl last weekend. Although I’d love the Niners to upset the Pack, Jimmy G will fall flat. Titans with or without Henry are still the better overall team and for sure the better coach. Titans power to a win. Tom Brady leads his team to yet another conference championship game to the amazement of no one, #GOAT.

  14. The Bucs have three advantages; experience, home field and Tom Brady. The Rams are good enough in all facets of the game to counteract those three and take advantage of an injured/depleted team. Turnovers will be the key.

If the same Bills team that played NE shows up against KC, it’ll be hard night for the Chiefs.

    Tennessee wins. Period.

GB is too good, too rested and too ‘home’. The Packers will have to literally self destruct not to advance.

  15. Titans over Bengals – 2 exceptionally good teams, football fans in general should be thrilled to see in the next round playing to represent AFC in SB… Henry is the Factor..

49ers over Packers – throughout NFL history their are team that excel in regular season and the fall off in playoff.. The Packers are currently that team… The 9ers are the team built to frustrate the pack…

Bucs over Rams – Bucs have played impressive at home while the Rams on a short week are traveling across country and their schedule is disrupted…

Bills over Chiefs – There is usually an upset and this looks to be the one most likely… The Chiefs made it 3 years in a row… With each year the odds become more against them.. Bills get revenge for last year..

  16. The Rams defense was built for this game, too much emphasis has been placed on Stafford’s mistakes and not what he’s capable of doing.

  17. Packers are undefeated at home this season. ‘Niners will get a chilly reception in Green Bay, literally and figuratively

  18. Weekend of the upset.
    Titans
    49ers
    Rams
    Bills

    ——–
If I had to pick margin of victory
    Titans by 3
    49ers by 6
    Rams by 17
    Bills by 14

  19. The Bucs have three advantages; experience, home field and Tom Brady.

    —-
Brady when he cheats is an advantage.

  20. Is it just me or does It seems like it’s been weeks since the last games?

I’m looking forward to the upcoming games. I don’t think both NFC West teams lose. I’m thinking : Rams, Packers, Bills & Titans win.

  21. First game, Bengals over the Titans by 3. The Titans have been disappointing when they should have done better. The Bengals are starting to believe.

Second game, Packers by 21. Jimmy Hair cannot outscore the unethical, taunter, whiner, and former princess pinkie toe. The defenses are near equal, but no one cheats more in games to get free plays than the head Cheese Cheater, Ewwin Wawgers.

Third game, Rams by 14. I’ve seen what Tampa can do. I’ve seen how much better the Rams defense is than Tampa’s. Tomasina will find it rough going.

Fourth, Chiefs by 3. Unless Allen wants to be a running back all day, he won’t beat the Chiefs nor outscore them.

  22. Platinum Pick of the Week: San Francisco (+6). W-a-a-a-y too many points. The Packers are susceptible to the run, so Mitchell and Samuel will thrive, eat up time and allow Garoppolo to pass, oh, 15-20 times. Fewer throws, fewer chances for a Jimmy G(affe). A lot depends on Bosa’s availability, but the Niners with the points is clearly a sound bet. Packers 28, Niners 26.

  23. “Bills won their Superbowl last weekend.”

Man, are Pats fans STILL saying this? New England is not that team anymore.

As for the playoffs, you guys could have warned us about all of the nervousness & uncertainty that goes along with them. To think I envied your team all these years…

  24. Titans 30 Bengals 17 – Could go either way, but if Derrick Henry plays like Derrick Henry, then the Bengals will be in for a long day. If he’s not 100% back though, this could go either way. I’m thinking he’ll have a superb day and roll over Cinci, as much as it pains me as an LSU fan and a Texans fan to say it.

Packers 32 49ers 13 – 49ers coming off a short week, banged up, and just played the game of their lives against Dallas. I’ve heard it said before that GB isn’t a sunny beach in California. Reigning MVP plays like one and the game is never close.

Rams 22 Buccaneers 21 – Not really sure about this one. Could go either way. Hard to pick against Brady, but the Rams look legitimate. I’ll probably regret this pick, one way or another.

Bills 27 Chiefs 25 – Could be high-scoring, but both teams also have got legitimately stuffling defenses. They go neck-to-neck and it could go either way. My head tells me “Chiefs” but my heart tells me “Bills”. Prediction: Neither the Bills or Chiefs will go to the Super Bowl. Winner of Tennessee-Cincinnati will decide not only the AFC, but the Super Bowl Champion.

  25. NFL demands Rodgers v Brady, and Mahomes v sacrificial team.
I hope we can escape this with some exciting upsets.

Thanks Florio! You keep picking against the Chiefs. How did that work out for you last week? LOL
    __________________________________________________________________
Florio picked against Buffalo last week as well and most of the weeks this season that the Bills ended up winning… look how that turned out.
Go back and look at how many times he has picked the Chiefs to win… a heck of a lot more than Buffalo.
He’s got to pick one of them, so why not pick the team he’s picked against all year long?

  27. Titans by 7 (maybe more, if Derrick Henry can run)
49ers by 3 (Rodgers will choke again)
Rams by 10 (Bucs are too injured to stop the run)
Bills by 10 (Bills are better than they were last year, will win revenge game from last year)

  28. Not only are the Packers going to beat the Niners, they are going to dominate them.

    42-12 Packers. Mark it down.

  29. Despite the debacle in Buffalo last week, MF is still taking the Pats to win in KC this week and go on to the SB.

  30. I feel bad for the Cheatin’ Tommy lovers, still having to defend cheating and will have to do so forever. That must be exhausting.

Glad that’s not my problem now. 🙂

  31. Titans schedule was garbage, so Bengals will win that game. They need to convert in the red zone though.

    Packers over 49ers.

Rams over Bucs (sadly), Bucs o-line is too beat up.

Bill over Chiefs, I don’t think the Chiefs can win a close game.

  32. Chiefs defense isn’t good. Look at their games. Only good offense they stopped was Dallas. Every other good offense feasted all year…………same could be said for the Rams – look at their record against good teams……….what good teams did they beat on the road?

  33. Titans over Bengals. Defensive line of the Bengals will likely get trucked by Henry and Tennessee, while I just don’t have confidence in the Bengals O-line keeping Burrow upright.
Packers over 49ers. If Bosa plays 49ers probably cover, and might pull off the upset if the Packers leave it to Mason Crosby to make important kicks. We will see if Lafleur has learned that it’s better to bet on Rodgers than the worst kicker left in the playoffs. I Bosa misses the game, expect Rodgers to torture that weak secondary in a blowout.
Rams over Bucs. Rams beat Tampa earlier in the year when the Bucs had Godwin, Jones and Fournette all healthy. While the Stafford factor is real, particularly in the playoffs, it would likely take a monumental effort on his part to lose this game. And yet I still think he can pull that off…
Chiefs/Bills is a last team with the ball wins kind of game. Both defences padded their stats playing some awful quarterbacks/offences. Against the better ones they got shredded. Both Mahomes and Allen are amongst that latter group, so expect this to be the highest scoring game and the one with the most drama. I’d lean Chiefs only because Tre’Davious White’s absence will likely be felt.

  34. The Chiefs defense will be challenged no doubt but, short of injuries, don’t gamble against Mahomes Magic. We’ve all seen it too many times.

  35. The cold will have no impact on that 49ers Packers game. Are Packers fans really trying to convince themselves that they haven’t already lost at home in several playoff games against the Niners, Giants and Bucs? All of those games were during cold weather.

  36. I’ll Take
    Bengals
    Packers
    Rams
    Bills

    ______________________________________________

    Bills – Packers

    ____________________________

    Bills

  37. Bills are 2-4 against playoff teams this year. Chiefs were 4-3. BUT Bills have already beat the Chiefs once. Pick’em.

  38. Bengals almost reverted to the Bungles last week…this week they’ll succeed.
    TITANS 34
    BUNGLES 20

  39. The loss of Tra’Devious White for the Bills will have an impact in this game. The Bills haven’t faced any offense that can stress their secondary since they lost their best player until now.

  40. Florio picked the Pats and Steelers last week. That should count for more like 5 losses, not 2.

Brady when he cheats is an advantage.

    ———
Ok—so when and how does he do that exactly? You say it so often there must be obvious examples every week that somehow everyone else but you can’t see. Enlighten us and elaborate since you’re so bought into this notion.

  44. The arguments for the Titans over the Bengals are all valid …but I hope the Bengals win. Browns fan since the 70’s but Burrow is my favorite NFL player. Is he ever fun to watch.

  45. Irsay’s Bong says:

Buffalo won their Super Bowl last week, in for a big let down this week.
    ————————————————————————-
No such thing as let down in the playoffs…win or go home. Go Bills!!!

  46. Titans 30 Bengals 21 Henry bowls over the Bengals.

Bills 38 Chiefs 28 Mahomes dooms the Chiefs with a turnover.

Packers 20 49ers 13 A low scoring game with Rodgers going on a game winning drive.

Bucs 24 Rams 20 On paper the Rams should win due to them being healthier and stout on defense however Brady has made his career on defying on paper odds and the Bucs will force a pick off of Stafford to set up an NFC Title rematch.

  47. Third game, Rams by 14. I’ve seen what Tampa can do. I’ve seen how much better the Rams defense is than Tampa’s. Tomasina will find it rough going.

    —-
Sounds about right. This is Aaron Donald and Von Miller getting ready to feast on an injured OL and that’s the difference in this one.

  48. Tom Brady has never lost a divisional round game. Bucs are at home where they are 8-1. And the defense is healthy for the first time all year.

That’s what wins it for the Bucs. Defense. They will slow the Rams run. And pressure Stafford and he’ll throw picks. I agree with MDS and Florio. I trust Brady a heck of a lot more than Stafford in this situation. Brady has played in over 40 of these games. Stafford had only won a single playoff game.

  49. Tom Brady has never lost a divisional round game. Bucs are at home where they are 8-1. And the defense is healthy for the first time all year………..unfortunately I believe he has……….Denver in 2005 and Jets (Mark Sanchez) (TB12 throw at pick at the 1) in 2010…….but I still believe the BUCS will win – Defense, Short week and coast to coast travel for Rams and the 2 starting safeties are not there that were in week 3. I believe first to 30 points wins……

  50. Bucs will stuff the run, Stafford will play action into the close vicinity of defensive ends – forcing him to rush his throws. Bucs safeties will collect or force 2 turnovers. What the Bucs do with that, I don’t know. But this will not be an LA home game against a fading Arizona. And this isn’t week three at home. Heck, they couldn’t win their home game when only half the fans were cheering agents them (49ers). So, we’ll see. Anyone who thinks this is an easy Rams win is kidding themselves.

  51. I cannot WAIT for this weekend. Should be four great games. I think the biggest underdog of the weekend is the 49ers and I could still see them winning.

  52. 49er vs Greenway scheduled to be a night game on a cold January winter in Midwest. Saturday evenings forecast for Greenway.
Cold with considerable cloudiness; hypothermia likely without protective clothing

    ///////
Whether at home or on the road, the Packers are about .500 over the last 10 years in the playoffs. Lambeau has no mystique. It is not the frozen tundra. It is a heated field wherein the Packers may just get run over by the 49ers rushing offense.

  54. Despite being a Patriots fan since Day 1, I’m rooting for the Bills to finally bring one home. Their long time fans deserve it.

  55. Gotta love all the Chiefs hate! The last 3 years they have been an elite team and have rounded into elite form the second half of this 4th season with Patrick at the helm. Have been winners and have superstars all over the field. Hate them all you want – they are our KC Chiefs! Furthermore – all this who would you want as your QB Patrick or Josh…I’m pretty damn sure every KC fan wants Patrick and every Bills fan wants Josh – they are both great and should be for years to come….should be fun Sunday!

  56. As a canuck pats fan with the Bills being my closet team living in Toronto … as not happy it will their turn at the top of the AFC for awhile but well we n Brady have had a very good run and we all know the NFL stands for not for long … having said that would love to see Buffalo knock off KC and lordy may imagine they hey if GB falls to Jimmy G … as its been a fun and exciting year in the NFL with many good games and a few more to come.

    ——-
“Good” is subjective I suppose but the Chiefs beat the Raiders and Eagles on the road, both of which were playoff teams. The Chiefs also had the most difficult schedule this season in terms of opposition winning percentage.

The Bills lost to the Steelers and Colts at home while losing to the Bucs, Patriots, Titans and (LOL!) the Jaguars at home.

  58. Bengals in a squeaker. Coach Zac knows Tannehill’s weaknesses, having coached him for years, and will have OC play directly to them.

  59. Bills defense is good, no doubt about it but look a this list of QB’s they faced:

    Roethlisberger (PITT)
    Jacoby Brissett (MIA)
    Taylor Heinicke (WASH)
    Davis Mills (HOU)
    Mahomes
    Taneyhill (TENN)
    Tagovailoa (MIA
    Lawrence (JAX-Rookie)
    Mike White (NYJ-Rookie)
    Wentz (IND)
    Trevor Siemien (NO)
    Mac Jones (NE-Rookie)
    Brady (TB)
    Cam Newton (CAR)
    Jones (NE-Rookie)
    Matt Ryan (ATL)
    Zach Wilson (NYJ-Rookie)

So is it possible that some of their defensive success was schedule driven?

I totally agree with this. I also hope that they bring it home for Jim Kelly.

  61. Rams, in addition to already besting TB once this year, have the personnel to follow the formula the Saints used to beat Tampa twice – pressure up the middle in Brady’s face, stop the crossing routes, and stuff the run.

Bengals are a bit banged up, but if Joe Cool can turn it into a track meet, they have a good chance of upsetting the Titans.

Niners are banged up, and have to find a way to get pressure on Rodgers and force him into bad throws. I don’t think they can pull if off if Bosa can’t play. They sagged noticeably after Bosa went out in the Cowboys game.

Bills are going to win a track meet, and that’s what this game will be

  62. JSYK, I was 6 – 0 last wknd, I trust Burrow to throw more TDs than Henry can run, Bengals win, niners living in 80s, Jimmy G over Rodgers? no way, Pack romps…. Another QB fight, Stafford or Brady???? Duh! easy peasy pick BUCS!, toughest n best game Bills Chiefs…. Mahomes plus Andy Reid, advantage KC
Cincinnati, Green Bay, Tampa Bay, Kansas City//// I see a rematch of SB 1.. Green Bay Kansas City Super Bowl

  63. Historically, the Packers don’t choke until the NFC Championship… so they should handle the Niners

Tom Brady has never lost a divisional round game.

    ****************

He has lost two – Jets in 2011 and Denver in 2006

  65. I’m going with GB over SF, 30-23, TB over LAR 33-30, KC 44- BUF 38, and CIN 27-TEN 24 in OT.

As much as I love watching Deebo playing WR and RB, SF can’t use him to throw it to 8 targets like Rosgers can in Adams,Cobb,Luzard,St.Brown, Winfree A.Jones, AJ Dillom,& M.Lewis.

TB12 stays undefeated in playoffs in the NFC, Stafford still awaits 1st playoff win as TB continues.

KC and BUF go shot for shot and KC’s experience wins out in shootout for the ages. 2 TO’s returned for TDs sink Bills

CINCINNATI wins thriller in TEN, as Titans miss FG to tie in OT leading the Bengals to their 1stAFC championship game since Ghostbusters II was in theaters(I don’t know if that’s true or not, but probably close!)

  66. The Packers are getting healthy at just the right time, I expect them to win pretty decisively. Packers 38 49ers 14
