49ers knock off Packers in 13-10 win at Lambeau Field

USA TODAY Sports

Aaron Rodgers may be the league’s MVP this season, but he won’t be going to the NFC Championship Game.

The 49ers defense shut down the Packers offense after an early touchdown and a fourth quarter blocked punt gave them a tie despite their own offensive ineffectiveness over most of a snowy evening at Lambeau Field. The offense was able to come up with just enough juice in the final three minutes of action.

After forcing a three-and-out in the wake of their game-tying touchdown on a blocked punt by Jordan Willis, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo hit George Kittle and Deebo Samuel to move the ball into Packers territory. A couple of Samuel runs forced the Packers to use up their remaining timeouts and set up a pivotal third down that they converted on a nine-yard run by Samuel.

Samuel limped off the field, but two more runs set up a 45-yard field goal attempt that Robbie Gould sent through the uprights for a 13-10 win. The 49ers will now go to Tampa or Los Angeles with a chance to advance to the Super Bowl.

It’s fitting that Samuel got the big play at the end on offense because he continued to be the team’s leading playmaker. He had 10 carries for 39 yards, three catches for 44 yards, and a 45-yard kickoff return that set up a field goal to kick off the second half.

The win means Rodgers is now 0-4 against the Packers in the playoffs and this loss was a crusher given the Packers’ top seed and offensive success throughout the season. After a 69-yard touchdown drive to open the game, they only managed 194 yards the rest of the way. That included a 75-yard pass to Aaron Jones at the end of the first half, but an ensuing field goal try was blocked and the Packers would only score three more points over the course of the evening.

Arik Armstead and Nick Bosa each had a couple of sacks to help keep the Packers from padding their lead and any team considering 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans for their head coaching vacancy will likely be impressed by the plan he was able to put together for the second straight playoff game.

Ryans will get at least one more chance to burnish his resume next weekend and the 49ers could be making their second trip to the Super Bowl in the last three seasons.

  1. The better quarterback does not always win. At this point, Aaron Rodgers has now became known for this. Home field advantage does not really work in the Packers favor in the playoffs.  The 49ers played with more heart. They seem to have the momentum at just the right time in the season.

  2. There’s a way refs call the Packer games in the regular season, and a way they call them in the playoffs. Just sayin’…

  3. San Francisco was lucky to win that game. But they showed grit and toughness and made the plays when it mattered. Good teams find ways to win the ugly games

  4. watching aaron rodgers constantly choke in the playoffs is pretty much the best thing in football today.

  5. Rodgers just isn’t a big game QB. Defense holds them to six points, he has the cold, snow, and home field, in his favour, and he can’t come up with the W.

  6. Even though most agree, it seemed most of the players gave it everything they had. It was a little refreshing this week not seeing offenses just lighting it up at will.

  7. Our Packers got beat at their own cold game. We are all so sad in Plainview. Shocked I tell ya. Goodbye Aaron.

  8. A blocked FG. A blocked punt. A QB who looks only at one WR. That’s how you lose a game you had no business losing. The “Special” Teams coach, who should never have been hired and should have been fired months ago, should be gone right now, and that’s partially on MLF too.
Aaron, you can go now, and tease another team through the regular season before not showing up in the playoffs.
Congratulations and good luck to San Francisco.

  9. Only a few short hours after the NFL updated protocols to accommodate Rodgers going to the Superbowl. I guess now that concern is completely off the table.

  10. Congrats to the 49ers. One day I hope Aaron Rodgers gets content checking the ball down to the backs. Or that he decides to move on for a draft haul. Either/or.

  11. Aaron rodgers belongs in that second tier of all time qbs. Ya know the Brees’, elways’, the farves.

Not in the same class as brady/manning/montana

  12. Packers fans are always telling us it’s all about Superbowls, well mark this season down as another failure.

  13. Fact is, the Packers are a better team than the Fraudy Niners, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

  14. Game. Blouses.

Playoff football is the best football. At this point the 49ers are playing with house money. Coming back from 3-5 to the playoffs, to a Wild-Card win, to Divisional Round now to the NFCCG all seems surreal. This team if anything is resilient, when the offense falters our Defense steps up, today it was also Special Teams.

Great season Green Bay, you don’t need any patronizing. Year in and year out you remain a contender not just in the NFC but the NFL. You shouldn’t expect next year to be any different.

    Onto – uhh, we’ll see.

    GO NINERS!!!!!

  15. That game was gift wrapped for the Packers to win by their defence and Jimmy Crappollo and Aaron still found a way to choke.

    Classic.

Jimmy Crappollo beats 40 million dollar Dak and GOAT Rodgers on the road in back to back weeks.

  16. Further proof that Aaron Rodgers is nothing more than a great “Regular Season QB” stop calling him one of the greatest to play the game…0 TD passes tonight

  17. There will be a lot of silence from the obsessive Packer fans who constantly post here. Another devastating playoff loss for the team that just can’t quite get there. And this one really stings as it was probably the last time Rogers we’ll see Rogers playing in GB.

  18. MVP? I don’t know how you can be so special and only lead your team to 10 points versus SFO. And if you are a Packers fan and this makes you upset: R-E-L-A-X.

  19. This is exactly why I tell crazy fans the better of best QB don’t win the best team effort wins! The Packers ST lost Arod this game the Bengals defense and ST won Burrow the game and this is why we love football so much!

  20. Not surprised. Lafleur is an over rated Coach. 12 is responsible for every win he’s ever had. Lambeau does not have a home field advantage when the weather is that cold. It’s good for no one.

  21. 1. Soft finesse teams lose to power teams. especially in bad weather
    2. Rodgers is a below 500 playoff quarterback. he front runs in the regular season chasing MVPs but does not step up or lead when it counts
    3. Packers refs tend to disappear in the playoffs when there are too many eyes watching
    4. The quit in the cold reminds me of the packers first game this season

  22. The Super Bowl XXIII rematch is in the cards!!!
Just a glorious day of upsets today.
Home field will be both held by tomorrow’s winners, but to say either of them are a solid favourite would be underselling what these two scrappy teams have pulled off these past two weeks.

  23. It required 1 drive to end up winning the game for SF. The Special Teams scored the rest. Anything but an anemic offensive performance by Rodgers and the GB offense wins this. The unit that lost this was 1 GB special teams. 2- GB Rodgers led offense.

  24. Conflicted. I like Rodgers but can’t stand packers fans and the state of Wisconsin. This will be an evening of deep contemplation.

  25. So much for this frozen tundra advantage. Aaron Rodgers is soft. it was too cold for him. 0 tds.

  26. Can’t say it wasn’t fun watching Aaron Rodgers go home early after expecting to be coronated at the SB.

Easy guy to root against as he thinks he’s always the smartest guy in the room, he’ll tell you whether you ask him or not.

  27. This was a game the MVP neeeded to show up for. His, oh gee where is Adams game plan anit MVP stuff. Ya his special teams sucked and gave up points but he had the chance to come back, take the team on his shoulder and win the game and he folded like a tent. Ironicly the 9ers actually sucked most of the game. A handfull of plays won them the game

  28. Congrats to 49ers and their fans on the win tonight from this Packer fan. A few observations: The Niners exploited the one segment of the Packers that was woefully weak….their special teams; I’ve rarely seen a guttier performance than what the Niners gave tonight. They were beat up, but kept answering the bell; The Pack Defense gave better than they got, but it wasn’t enough; Lastly, Rodgers looked off most of the night and this may likely have been his last game as a Packer. He has made it a habit the past number of years to look all of average in the playoffs. Go get yourselves another win next week Niners.

  29. Thank you 49ers. For all the macho posturing, the truth is that nobody likes playing football on an ice sheet in zero degree weather and no one particularly likes watching it, either. An NFC Championship game in L.A. or Tampa will be a much more enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

  30. Two fun games today. Kudos to the 49ers and Bengals for knocking out the #1 seeds. The playoffs are just as unexpected as much of the regular season. Cool.

  31. WOW!! I thought they were done when the didn’t pick up the 4th and 1 earlier in the 4th quarter. I just want all the know-it-alls on ESPN and NFL network that have picked against the 49ers the last two weeks to eat a little crow or at least wear a clown nose on the air!

  32. I must admit I had my doubts at first; (-7 offense into Q2) but steadily they chipped away. I hope Niners get Rams (again) as we are in McVay and Stafford’s head, but at this point, I don’t care if it’s the GOAT, either. Two must wins on the road against LA and Dallas, then on the road in 0 weather; that’s a team with character.

  33. Congrats 9ers fans. Fun game.

Hope you ride the wave to the Super Bowl.

  34. Packers defense great [until the final drive]: holding the 49ers to 2 field goals!
Packers offense underperformed greatly; with the talent on that side of the ball they should have scored 24+ points; instead 10!!!!
Packer’s ‘special’ teams [and offense] lost the game/season. One missed block leading to a blocked punt gave the 49er their only touchdown.
Packers had no answer for the 49ers defense after the first Packer drive…

  35. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

    No Pack No

    😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

    No Pack No

  36. And that blocked field goal proved to be the difference (although the blocked punt didn’t help either)

Let the Aaron Rodgers off-season soap opera begin.

  37. Green Bay Special Teams let the 49ers crawl back in the game. Jimmy G was awful until the last 2 minutes then he converted everything as usual. Aaron Rodgers though was awful he looked scared, pressed on his throws, and should have thrown 2 picks. 49ers Defense shocked me good.

  38. Great defense and special teams tonight. Offense looked good running the ball. That said, Garrapollo should have thrown 3 interceptions tonight…scary.

  39. Everybody now….

Duh na duh na na na…Go Pack, Go…Home

Duh na duh na na na…Go Pack, Go…Home

Enjoy the offseason Cheesehead. What a great #1 seed! #Delicious

  40. Deebo Samuel is a stud like Marshall Faulk was. The Packers may choke at home, but not even close to choking like the Cardinals do at home.

  41. Not even surprised, things felt off as soon as that fumble was overturned. Not blaming the refs, it was close, just saying it showed the football gods weren’t on our side. It was called a fumble on the field and should not have been overturned, but once it was I knew we had some bad juju.

  42. Good. Relax at home Aaron. Now just gotta knock Brady out so we can enjoy some new blood in the super bowl.

  43. Congrats to the 49ers and their fans. You came to our field in the most adverse conditions with so many injuries and hung in there to the end. I wish our team had had half as much heart today.

  44. Rodgers fans can’t possibly blame the defense now for this loss. The offense scored just one touchdown. This team is stacked. Simply put, Aaron took the night off.

  45. Aw…

I guess we will have to wait till next year for the annual Aaron Rodgers loss in the NFC Championship game

  46. Hopefully Deebo and Williams injuries aren’t bad. However, Packers fans are hurting again…

  47. I had heard that Rodgers was going to boycott the Super Bowl but I had no idea he was also going to boycott the NFC Championship this year too. For an MVP he sure does seem to lose an awful lot of playoff games. Meanwhile the true greatest QB of all time, Tom Brady, has his sights on ring number eight.

  48. 49ers defense was absolutely lights out tonight. Just dominated and dictated the game. Armstead and Bosa…. Wow. Just wow.

  49. As a Bostonian and pats fan living in Chicago where my wife is from, champagne and beer sales spiked 50% after the packers lost. Aaron is such a tremendous talent. If this is his last hurrah, It’s been amazing to watch. I hope he comes back only with Green Bay, so I can laugh at my wife’s reaction when he says to her fellow bears fans “ I still own you.”

Dare I say Jimmy VS GOAT in the NFCCG?!?!?!

Great showing by San Francisco! Tremendous coaching and development. I wish them nothing but the best!

Now, LETS GO TOMMY and GRONK!!!!!!!!!!

  50. GB Drives tonight TD, Fumble, Punt, Punt, Punt, Halftime, Punt, Field Goal, Blocked Punt for a SF TD, and another Punt. Doublecheck that Rodgers please MVP MY ASS.

Bucs beat the niners in Tampa when they won the SB in 2092

Think Brady has some extra motivation now ? No trip to GB, and back has the top mvp candidate (most likely) With a win tomorrow …..

  51. GB Drives tonight TD, Fumble, Punt, Punt, Punt, Halftime, Punt, Field Goal, Blocked Punt for a SF TD, and another Punt. Doublecheck that Rodgers please MVP MY but BOOTTY

Bucs beat the niners in Tampa when they won the SB in 2092

Think Brady has some extra motivation now ? No trip to GB, and back has the top mvp candidate (most likely) With a win tomorrow …..

  52. The better and tougher team won. It was a battle and cold weather at Lambeau is amazing football to watch.

  53. The win means Rodgers is now 0-4 against the Packers in the playoffs

    —-

    Lol you nailed that one!

  54. I said this would be the weekend of the underdogs and a bunch of people on here had an issue with that.

  55. The Packers have no one to blame but themselves. After the 4th-and-1 stop I thought the Packers would win. But they kept throwing the ball. Packers’ play selection in the 4th quarter was 10 pass, 2 run. You can’t win that way in the playoffs, in 0 degree snowy weather. I could not understand the play calling.

  56. Looks like Jimmy G added a few $$$s to his next deal!! Did not look like it with his Int before halftime.
    Glad the Pack is out!!

  57. His post season brilliance shines through again, hah. At least he can blame special teams though. We know it won’t ever be Aaron’s fault

  58. The Packers weakness this year has always been Special Teams. And it looked like they stopped playing on that second block.

  59. By the Grace of God!
    Night-night, Aaron. Night-night, Wisconsin.

    Jimmy G > Sore-toed liar

  60. Rookie long snapper with an incredible whiff on a punt block and you score 10 points. Go clean out your locker. The 49ers didn’t earn it, but they deserve it.

  61. Terrible game, 49ers rubbish offensively and very lucky. Good to see Karma catching up with Rogers 😊

  62. 1. Soft finesse teams lose to power teams. especially in bad weather
    ==========

Jones and Dillon combined for 1600 rushing yards this year. How is that soft?

Dillon went out in the 2nd Q. That was a huge factor in this game.

  63. Rodgers fans can’t possibly blame the defense now for this loss. The offense scored just one touchdown. This team is stacked. Simply put, Aaron took the night off.
    ===========

Great defense. Kept the 9ers out of the endzone.

Special teams for the loss this time.

  64. Probably the best Packers (post season) defensive performance of my lifetime.

And they still find a way to lose.

  65. Best day of every year is when Rodgers completes his playoff collapse!

Anyone thing he will learn some humility?? Probably not!

  66. 10-10 tied game with more than 4 minutes left and season on the line, all he had to do is to make this one drive to score a TD or FG and Rodgers didn’t get it done. Packers fans and observers saw this too many times to honestly want to anoint him the best? Sorry, he didn’t get it done. And I don’t care how pretty he throws the ball or how Chris Simms want to make excuses for this guy, he ain’t the best. They don’t give trophies out just talents alone. “You play to win the game.”

  67. Kudos to the Niners – they showed how mentally tough they were to get this done. Jimmy G still makes some heart-stopping throws, which they will need to clean up, but everything else about their game was impressive. As a Saints fan, I hope they knock off TB (or the Rams) and make it to the Super Bowl!

  68. With all this talent over the years and still only one Super Bowl. Another one and done Aaron. Go rest your toe and hope I don’t have to hears about you until August.

  69. For all the whiners about the weather, the Bills had similar weather last week against the Patriots and scored a TD every time they had the ball on offense. It wasn’t the weather that stopped either team from scoring. It was just good defense and two lousy QB’s. One of them decided to do something at the end of the game, and as usual it wasn’t Rodgers. He doesn’t win games in the fourth quarter. He’s chokes them away.

Aaron Rodgers is the GOAT, convince me otherwise.

    ——————————
Nah, the goat horns go on their special teams. Rodgers actually played a decent game, I would give him a good strong B+ maybe A-.

  71. I’ve been down voted for YEARS posting about A-aron.

Acknowledge me! Trent Dilfer has a ring too.

  72. If some other top quarterback, who will not be named, threw no touchdowns, had the number one seed and was the number one candidate to win MVP only went on to choke in a playoff game this horribly, we wouldn’t hear the end of it. His name rhymes with lady.

I felt that was more due to others than due to Rogers, I thought he was making good choices hitting good throws, some impressive even. I only call that a B+ tho. An A or A+ would have been taking the team on his own back and getting that game, which he didn’t do. Such is the difference between a guy with good or even great skills, and a true GOAT QB.

  75. Instead of my Packers losing that game , I would have much rather had a chihuahua gnawing on my testicle ever so gently , we were out-coached and out-played , congrats 9er’s fans , im not making any excuses

  76. Hub Arkush was right Aaron! I’ve never seen a more unlikable player and fan base just consistently talk sh** and gloat every year, bring all kinds of bad karma upon themselves, and then act shocked when they get exactly what they deserve! Awesome!

You do realize that Rodgers did win a super bowl, right? You can’t say Rodgers isn’t a big game QB when he’s won the biggest game their is.

  79. Hearing Rodgers complain about his future after the game was the perfect exclamation point as to who always comes first in Green Bay.

That depends on what you consider as choking. The Bucs were down 27-3 and tied it at the end of the fourth quarter. They didn’t win, but Brady sure as heck made it interesting. He also scored more than one touchdown in his own stadium.
