Tonight, Aaron Rodgers faces team that passed on him for the 13th time

Seventeen years ago, the 49ers opted to use the first overall pick not on local prospect (and 49ers fan) Aaron Rodgers but on Alex Smith. Rodgers, as we well know, didn’t like it. Rodgers, as we well know, holds a grudge like Khomeini.

Rodgers gets his 13th shot at vengeance tonight against the 49ers. Against San Francisco in the regular season, Rodgers had a 6-3 record. In the postseason, however, he has never beaten them. Not once. Not ever.

In the 2012 divisional round at Candlestick Park, the 49ers dismantled Green Bay, 45-31. The following year, in the wild-card round, the 49ers won on a very cold day at Lambeau Field. (Colin Kaepernick was the quarterback in both of those games. Not bad for a guy who would be regarded just a few years later as not good enough to even have a roster spot on an NFL team.)

Two years ago, the 49ers turned Jimmy G into Bob Griese and ran, ran, and ran some more, steamrolling Rodgers and company in the divisional round at Levi’s Stadium.

This could be the last time Rodgers faces the 49ers as a member of the Packers. Maybe it’s the last time he ever plays the team that whiffed on the best player from the 2005 draft pool, by far. It also could be his last chance to beat San Francisco in the postseason.

If he doesn’t, he’ll fall to 0-4 against the 49ers in the playoffs. Which would make his draft-day vow seem quite lame.

  1. I’m so sick of these guys getting all butt hurt over their draft selection. If this is still a problem after all these years then it tells you a lot … about him.

  2. Previous defeats to SF were much more on the defense than on Rodgers. If they have improved enough to keep the Niners under 28, I like the Packers’ chance.

  3. Have to include that slanted take on Kaepernick, eh? For one, playoff runs early in a career guarantee nothing – right, Mark Sanchez? For another, Kaepernick’s impact in those playoff games were with his legs, especially the second won (which was won by the SF defense holding Rodgers to 177 passing yards even without the aid of a single turnover!). It’s also worth point out that Kaepernick was best in 2012, his first season as a starter – he got worse every year in his career after that. Similar to Sanchez, whom nobody complained about seeing fade from the league. That happens in the NFL.

  4. Rodgers won’t put up all world numbers today but he will win. Packers are better in every facet besides pass rushing. This will be a close one though.

  5. 0 – 3 in the playoffs is about team success. Rodgers vs Alex Smith is the point! And its no comparison!!

  6. The Packers giving up 45 points in 1 of the 3 loses is much Rodgers fault as a MLB team giving up 12 runs and blaming the loss on a hitter!

  7. Aaron Rodgers is going to the Hall of Fame. Alex Smith is not. I think he proved them wrong.

  8. I hope Packers win versus SFO and face TB in NFCCG. Best matchup for hype in my opinion. Then I hope Green Bay loses.

Bengals or Bills winning over Tom Brady in Super Bowl would be ideal. First-time SB winner beating the ultimate player in Super Bowl history is the way to do it.

  9. I think the Packers win tonight. Rodgers is playing too well, and their defense is getting healthy. Tough combo to beat in GB.

  10. I think the Packers deserve a more worthy opponent tonight. Nobody wants to watch 7 loss losers in the playoffs.

  11. Yeah, yeah… and Rogers, far more times than not vanishes in playoff games…
IF the Packers lose tonight or in the NFCC game, will it really surprise anyone at this point?

  12. QB gets the credit for a win and the blame for a loss, but it is a team game.
2012/13 seasons. Packer defence wasn’t alone in failing to contain a QB who was an exceptional runner. And of course Mike McCarthy learned nothing from the first loss.
In 2019 the defense was just not very good (Ted Thompson).
Once again the Packers face an exceptional running attack. This time their defense is better as is their running attack. Coaching may spell the difference this time….

  13. Wow, that’s amazing. I had no idea that the 49ers passed on Aaron Rodgers in the draft.

Who else would you be watching Phil? Your 10 loss losers are sitting at home for the next few months, so this is what you get. Nice to see that the Niners still live bigly in Seahawk fan’s head. 🤣

If you want to criticize him for their losses, fine. But your narrative is 100% false.

He’s the 4th highest rated post-season passer. 2nd highest active.

So, clearly, QB would have given the Packers a better chance to win.

  16. Over the course of about five years or so, the Browns passed on Rodgers, Big Ben, and Drew Brees. But why would you pick one of those guys when you have Tim Couch and Charlie Frye in your QB room?

  17. And 49er recently passed on Tom Brady too. That was two years ago. Evidently the coaches all reviewed Tom’s film and concluded that Tom was good but not that good. They passed on Tom and picked up Trace Lance. If 49er get pass Green Bay and Rogers, they will likely faced the good but not so good Brady.

  18. It’s really not fair to judge where he should have been drafted by later success. Maybe Rodgers wouldn’t have turned out so well if he didn’t get to spend 3 years as Favre’s backup. So much depends on the situation where you go.

  19. So he’d have rather walked into the train wreck that was Mike Nolan and a perpetual loser instead of being able to learn from Favre after all these years? I guess hindsight really is 50/20

  20. As a Niner fan I wish we has drafted Rogers. I believe Mike Nolan went for Alex because he thought he would be easier to coach and would not not challenge his authority. I always found Nolan, was to be kind, more about Mike Nolan. He was in his tailored suit, looking sharp on the side line and losing. This was a very long and dark time for 49er fans. I highly doubt the draft is eating at Rogers. He has been rolled a few times in the play offs by the Niners,so I would start there.

  21. Packer fans will have cold gravey on their poutine tonight

Someone’s salty about being eliminated early….again.

  22. To be fair, the 49ers have one fewer championship than the Packers since then, though more NFC Championships.

Really not false, those stats are nice but it still doesn’t erase the fact Rodgers has only 7 playoff wins and 8 losses since his last Super Bowl appearance. Which last time I did math was below .500. Wins and losses are the only stat that matters come playoff time. Rodgers hasn’t delivered especially in NFFCGs. Some of it not his fault I get it. But a QB needs to step up and lead, not whine to the media.
