Now that the Vikings have a General Manager, they can turn their attention to their search for a new head coach.

In his introductory press conference on Thursday morning, new G.M. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah said in his opening remarks noted Minnesota has had initial conversations with candidates. But he emphasized that those conversations have been just that — initial.

Now things will begin to heat up, as Minnesota has identified the qualities it wants in a head coach.

“We know what we want to find,” Adofo-Mensah said. “We want leadership. We want somebody who’s going to rally the collective over the individual. We want somebody who’s got vision, who can communicate, who’s got a solid football foundation, who understands how football is interconnected and what that means. So that’s been our focus in these last few days, really honing in on what we want.”

The Vikings previously announced interviews with Nathaniel Hackett, who has since been hired to coach the Broncos, Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, Buccaneers defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell, and 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans.

Minnesota’s new head coach could come from that list or the search could be expanded. Adofo-Mensah does have ties to Ryans, as they were with San Francisco together for a few seasons.

  1. So after one year as the Cowboy’s OC Kellen Moore is getting interviews for a HC position? Seems to be jumping the gun quite a bit. But Bienemy can’t get a chance anywhere? It would be shocking if it wasn’t so expected.

  2. Vikings are a guard and possibly center from having a Superbowl offense. A healthy Hunter and 1 solid cornerback addition could make them a serious threat in the NFC. No need for a rebuild. Viking trajectory is going up while the Pack is downward…fast…like a 2 ton boulder rolling downhill.

  3. I don’t get the Raheem Morris interest at all. He hasn’t exactly been a great DC, so what’s the attraction. Seriously, what am I missing?

Ha! I just blew coffee out my nose!

  5. @complicatedfella….

They need a quarterback, for one thing. Half the defense signed one contract too many. Too much money going to a running back. Too many things wrong with how they are built to list. Tear it down, Kwesi.

  6. It won’t matter . . . we’ll continue to be in the top half of the draft each year.

    ___________

He’s a leader. He can coach both sides of the ball. He has head coaching experience. When he was coach of the Bucs, they spent less than any other team by a wide margin. He was set up to fail in that job. Now he’s spent the last 10 years getting ready for his next chance. His players love him. He was a defensive coach who became the wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator for a Super Bowl team. When do you ever see a coach have such major roles on both offense and defense in his career? If you’re basing your judgment on where his defense ranks this year, you’re missing a lot of the picture.

  8. I’m really not excited about the prospect of yet another defensive minded head coach. I know it’s far easier said than done, but the new regime has to be able draft and develop a franchise QB and implement a modern offensive scheme so the team can compete in today’s NFL. They’ve been cobbling the QB position together with duct tape and bailing wire for far too long, wasting the careers of many talented players at other positions along the way. An unimaginative, ball control offense and playing defense isn’t going to get it done. The new GM seems like a bright, collaborative guy. I hope he gets it right.

Maybe the offense should make the playoffs first before you start calling it a Superbowl offense.

  10. Ryans if he gets to bring the 49ers defensive players with him. If not, I’d prefer an offense person. I’d like to see some stability with the offense which has been lacking for a decade.
