Momentum builds toward Josh McDaniels, Dave Ziegler package for Raiders

The first clue that change was coming for the Raiders arrived when the team clumsily fired G.M. Mike Mayock. The next clue, which technically was the first clue, came when the Raiders requested permission to interview Patriots executive Dave Ziegler for the not-yet-vacant Raiders G.M. job. The latest clue came when rumors began to make the rounds over the weekend (as mentioned here) that Raiders owner Mark Davis will be making a run at Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

Finally, after nearly three weeks and nine coaching vacancies, the Raiders requested permission to speak to McDaniels. There’s more and more buzz building that McDaniels and Ziegler will end up in Las Vegas as head coach and G.M.

As one source not with direct knowledge of the situation but sufficient general knowledge of the sausage-making process put it, a McDaniels and Ziegler package is “just about a sure thing” for the Raiders.

Plenty of boxes still need to be checked, however. Four years ago, McDaniels was ready to jump to the Colts — until he didn’t. Whatever caused him to change his mind (something that happened with the Patriots, something that happened with the Colts, or a little bit of both) could still occur once he spent more time learning about working there..

That said, McDaniels is the target for the Raiders. The Raiders are the target for McDaniels. The wheels are in motion. Barring a flat tire, McDaniels will happen in Vegas and stay in Vegas.

  1. McDaniels will come in and immediately trade Carr and Waller for a bag of chips. They won’t meet the requirements of his “vision”.

  2. Even as a Bears fan growing up in the 60’s & 70’s I loved the Al Davis Raiders. Raiders fans deserve better than McDaniels.

Halas and (Al) Davis were great owners even if the recent trophy cabinets might say otherwise. But for both organizations the apples aren’t even close to the tree.

  3. If the Raiders hire a new head coach, I hope Bisaccia gets a chance to be head coach for another team, if he wants it. He did really well this year.

  4. I’ve been a Raiders fan through thick and thin for 35+ years. Hiring McDaniel’s might be the last straw. That guy is the worst, can’t even stand to look at him. I won’t ever root for that guy.

    Tebow is available.

  6. Just an FYI when he was in Denver, he traded Cutler, Marshall, Scheffler, and Hillis away. All key elements to an already GOOD offense.

  7. I don’t know who the Raiders will bring in, but more than likely Carr is gone. Hypothetically they could trade for Rodgers on a 2 year deal, draft a rookie QB in 2023 and be mentored his first year. They could also bring in Watson, which I believe would be a mistake. Not sure if McDaniels is the right one, but who is left? By the way I have been a Raider hater for over 50 years, so honestly I don’t want to see them succeed.

  8. I’m honestly wondering what Mark Davis saw in McDaniels besides the Bill Belichick connection. If this is indeed happening, I really hope McDaniels has worked on his people skills.

  9. I have to chuckle at Raiders fans pretending the Davis Family is a representation of knowing what to do in the Cap Era.

Those idiots are as dumb as Pitt having the same style of team from the 1970s pretending it works well and wins titles.

At least Pitt got a couple but one came when Brady was hurt in 2008.

Haven’t sniffed one in 15 years.

  10. If the nfl wants McDaniels to succeed, he will. Until that time comes he’s no different than any other coach. If you ain’t winning it all that what good are you

You certainly would be the expert, when it comes to sinking ships.

  13. If memory serves me right, other than 2002, the Raiders for the most part have been irrelevant since the 80’s. In saying this, They have had flashes of life now and again. When was their last divisional championship?

  14. I heard Brady is going with McDaniels if Josh leaves New England. I don’t know if that means the Raiders, but if McDaniels has Brady in his pocket, he’d probably be able to land any job. I only have one source, but it connects all the dots.

  15. These teams never learn. Every single assistant plucked from the Belicheck tree besides Vrabel has been a stiff.

  16. So theyre going for the Patriot GM/HC package. Raiders are like 10 years behind everyone else, well except the Lions I guess theyre only a year behind them. I thought the league had finally moved on from trying to pick from the Belichick tree after getting burned one too many times.

  17. If you goes they need to bring back Bill O’brien
He knows the system and was there when they ran the Two TE offense

    —————————————————————————–

Vrabel played for Belichick. He never coached under him.

  19. Crazy how McDaniels keeps getting opportunities. Raiders will be hiring another HC in two years.

  20. What has any former Patriots Coordinator or front office done after leaving? More specifically what has McDaniels done as anOC or HC to deserve another job?

  21. So are they going into a rebuild? Who statistically could replace Carr? They need a culture overhaul. Winners. Some vets. Too may young fellas making mistakes already. What happens in Vegas…

  22. Winning formula there Marc. Go for it!

buwahaha, when will these teams learn to not try and create the Belichick magic without just getting Belichick??

  23. Well at least the Chiefs don’t have to worry about the Raiders for the next 3-4 seasons.

  24. Oh please oh please oh please! This Denver fan would LOVE to see it.

The Belichick “coaching tree” is a dying thorn bush.

  25. I feel like McDaniels would be successful in NE due to his familiarity. Outside of NE, you’d have to give him time outside of New England. His first stint as a HC was over a decade ago, he obviously could’ve learned from it. His actual football knowledge (not talent evaluation) was amazing even in Denver, but no one enjoyed playing with him as the coach. I do believe that stiffing Indy was beyond immature and detrimental though. Ironically Eberflus (McDaniels choice to run his DEF) is going to be a HC before McDaniels can resurface.

  26. Poor Raiders fans. This is NOT an upgrade at head coach. The interim coach was a much better choice than this retread. The man salvaged a sinking ship and got them into the playoffs! So much for loyalty! It’s amazing how 2-time losers get recycled, but Eric Bienemy can’t even get a sniff of a head coaching opportunity after all his awesome work with the Chiefs! Why hire from a team like New England that you’re better than? Go after KC’s stash! They will not sell ONE ticket because of these two dudes getting hired. What about the fan base? Give them something to be excited about. At least UPGRADE! Instead, they’re downgrading! If I was a die-hard Raiders fan, I’d be sick as 3 dogs over this!

  28. @firstandfive Vrabel never coached under Bill. Got his start at Ohio state under Urban and went to Houston under O’Brien and Romeo. Belichek has never had an assistant succeed really.

  29. McDaniels s just another retread. Guarantee if he is hired he is canned within four years. They have the right guy there doing the job that players like so he is good enough.

  30. “Vrabel played for Belichick. He never coached under him.”

He coached under BoB. Same difference

  31. First thing he will do is hire his kid brother away from the High School he’s coaching at to be QB coach, then he will get rid of Carr for a bag of chips. Good luck Raiders. There is no possible worse option unless you hire Matt Millen.

    Is this a joke?
Josh is the most successful OC in NFL history.
I hope he doesn’t take his 5 rings to that craphole, we’d hate to lose him in NE.

  33. Dear genius Raider fans:
At their current rate, it would take the Raider organization 50 more years to equal the number of SB victories Josh has — and that’s if Josh stops trying.

Its because hes a genuinely good OC folks keep wanting to see if that can show as a HC. But he does seem to be one of those guys cut out to be a good assistant coach not a head coach. The skillsets and requirements are farther apart than many think.

  35. I could see a team wth a young QB having interest in McDaniels, I don’t see how this is a fit for the Raiders.

  36. Oh the Hell with this. Mark Davis has no business owning a football team. I am done watching football if this happens.

  37. The Colts thing is overstated at this point as he wasn’t the only one to turn them down he was just the only one to do it that far in, showing that something was up there (most likely people realizing the fragile state of Andrew Luck and not being behind the wheel for what eventually happened a year later. Plus everyone ignores that that situation doesn’t happen if the Colts weren’t tampering with a playoff team.

His most recent brush with a head coaching job was the Cleveland job in 2020 and that was allegedly due to his insistence of once again wanting to be a Coach and GM. Sounds like the Raiders feel he might be better at it this time but the idea that he wanted to rebuild Cleveland with his own guys (who’s roster is STACKED) shows he probably still isn’t mature enough for that and he’s still the guy that tore down the Broncos because he felt like it.

One came when Brady was hurt? So what. In that case the pats got all their wins only because Eli manning wasn’t there? See how dumb that sounds.

  39. What a great week for the Broncos if this holds to be true! We cleaned house with bright new coaches and possibly Aaron Rodgers. Then, McDingDong gets hired by the Raiders which significantly boosts our position in the AFC West. Raiders are a complete train wreck if they tarde basacchia for McDaniels. plain and simple.

  40. carr needs so many weapons around him to succeed. we wont have the draft picks and top notch free agents are not going to come running to vegas if josh mcdaniel is the coach. if we cant get Harbaugh its best to stick with rich. at least he wont blow up what we got so far. i would trade carr and go with marriotti or try to get russell wilson or aaron rodgers..

  41. The question is who will have control over the roster? I sure would hope it was Ziegler.

Yep, we know how this will go. I think Bellichick is secretly sending McDaniels out to sabotage teams and then come back to the Pats so they can laugh about it.

  43. Only former Patriots coach to have a winning record away from Belichick was Bill O’Brien…and he sucked. Should tell you everything you need to know to avoid Patriots coaches but teams continue to hire Patriots coaches.

  44. What has any former Patriots Coordinator or front office done after leaving? More specifically what has McDaniels done as anOC or HC to deserve another job?
    ==========

    Licht was the reigning champ.

Dimitroff also got to a Super Bowl.

.. and Ozzie Newsome credits Belichick for building teh Ravens organization.

  45. “Just an FYI when he was in Denver, he traded Cutler, Marshall, Scheffler, and Hillis away. All key elements to an already GOOD offense.”
    ________

Not just good but #3 in the entire league. And they’d missed the playoffs by just one game the year before. If he just patches up the D they’re a playoff team. Instead he guts the offense but never gets it back to anywhere close to where it was, trades up for Tebow (but bizarrely never starts him thus admitting it was a huge blunder), and the team regresses in every single area.

  46. It’s almost like the front office isn’t even consulting the experts on the message boards. Craziness.

  47. It’s not a good fit for Josh.

It’s an even worse fit for the Raiders.

Bisaccia earned coming back for a Full Year with him as the HC with a full off-season.

Hopefully he gets on a good Staff this year, and gets a shot as HC next year somewhere.

He showed that he was up to the job. He Proved it.

  48. Maybe he’s matured since then but some of the stories out of Denver were just nuts. The bad drafts and trades rightfully get most of the attention but the smaller things were even crazier. Hired his brother as an assistant despite him having zero experience in either college or the NFL and he even wasted time reorganizing the non-football office jobs just so they’d look exactly like what the Patriots did. Imagine being an NFL head coach serving as your own GM and spending time worrying about who the administrative assistants in Marketing reported to.

  49. According to Belichick’s believers, it was Belichick who groomed Tom Brady, it was Belichick who developed players, it was Belichick who slowed down the defenders for his QB.

Heck, if with Brady, Pats would be #1 seed, and Pats might be in AFCCG, and according to Belichick’s believer, it was because Belichick put together a great team.

Without Josh? They have nothing to worry about.

  50. Only former Patriots coach to have a winning record away from Belichick was Bill O’Brien…and he sucked.

    —————————-

He pulled a Belichick on DeAndre Hopkins, and was called an idiot, and widely hated.

  51. I just don’t understand this. Fifty year Raider fan here, who has justified many a questionable move in the past…..Harbaugh I understand, failed re-treads I do not. If Al were alive he would keep Rich out of gratitude to a guy that got them to the playoffs. Mark, you can’t talk “loyalty”, “family”, and “once a Raider Always a Raider”, and do crap like this.

LOL while not intentional “sabotage” thats how this is going to play out. After 2-3 years of sub .500 football Mark Davis realizes what a mistake hes made and McDaniels simply runs back to the comforting arms of Bill. Funny no doubt, but it does suck for the Raiders who are in a position to take the next step up but instead take two steps back

  53. I hate to lose him in new England but if it happens I wish him well and raiders fans you are getting a hell of a coach.

  54. When does Tommy’s game kick off on Sunday?

I was told by Tommy lovers all season that it was a lock that Tommy would repeat so I’m looking forward to seeing what he does this weekend.

    Oh wait. I forgot! 😀

  55. Tom Brady is the only QB in the history of the NFL to be suspended for cheating.

    Never forget! I haven’t.

Soon you will realize he is better than Belichick as a coach. Of course, we already know Belichick is a garbage as a GM.

Patriots have less than $10 million in salary cap space,…
    1. Matthew Judon, $16.5 million
    T2. Nelson Agholor, $15 million
    T2. Hunter Henry, $15 million
    4. Jonnu Smith, $13.75 million

    15 + 15 + 13.5 = 43.5 million. Anyway, it is not Belichick’s money.

  58. I’m hoping Vic Tafur’s report in the Athletic is true. He’s says the Raiders – McDaniels deal has fallen apart. 👍🏼
