Report: Jim Harbaugh plans to become next coach of the Vikings

It’s never over until it’s over. But it’s looking like it could be over.

Via Chris Balas ot TheWolverine.com, Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh heads to Minnesota for a Wednesday interview that will be a precursor to Harbaugh becoming the team’s next head coach.

Per Balas, multiple sources claim the Wednesday interview is a formality. Which makes sense, given that the interview is happening on national signing day.

Harbaugh, per the report, wasn’t in his office on Tuesday. He didn’t address the team, but he reportedly said some “goodbyes” and “thank yous” on Monday.

As we’ve seen before, these things aren’t done until they’re done. But it’s clear that Harbaugh wants to return to the NFL. And it’s clear that the Vikings regard him as a serious candidate, with new G.M. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah very familiar with Harbaugh based on their two years together in San Francisco.

Unlike rising coordinators who may or may not prove they can win at the next level, Harbaugh has been a winner in the NFL, going 44-19-1 in his four years with the 49ers. In his first season, he took a 6-10 team to the brink of the Super Bowl, without the benefit of an offseason program.

  1. This is actually a legit good decision by Harbaugh. If Rodgers leave the Packers, having 6 games against Green bay, Bears and Detroit is a very soft schedule.

  2. Word is that Jim Haslett has already received a congratulations text from Bill Bellichek

  3. What good QB is going to want to go to Tampa and try to follow Brady? Unless the guy wins a SuperBowl he’d be viewed as a failure….

  4. 1 Black coach now out of 28 currently hired NFL coaches (3.6%). Not a good look for the NFL.

Funny how it’s bad for Flores to beef with his GM, but Harbaugh gets a second chance after he clashed with his GM.

That’s exactly what the Packers, Bears and Lions fans are saying too

  6. As a Vikings fan I’m thrilled…but I’m also waiting for the ball to go through the uprights before I celebrate…

  7. Brutal.

The Whinebaughs are everything that is wrong with compeitive sports.

This one will be demanding a perch on the “competition committee” next to ol’ Johnny.

  8. I’’d love to see him try to start a fight with Dan Campbell like he did Schwartz. Campbell will lay him out.

  9. Clown bringing Flores into this. Vikings have always had diversity. Look at the GM, whose name you probably can’t pronounce…

  10. Home run hire for a team that still has a short window to make a Super Bowl run. Harbaugh will be a shot in the arm to a team that needs it. These next few years are going to be exciting!!!

  11. Byron Leftwich is still a coordinator while mr khaki pants gets a second opportunity as a head coach

  12. Just good enough will be high standard to overcome for a coach who couldn’t make it the first time around. Good luck, clown.

  13. As a huge 49ers fan, this is an awesome hire for the Vikes. He’ll turn them around…. the guy just has a 4 year shelf life.

  14. The time is right for him to cash in. Lot of talent leaving Ann Arbor. I’m glad he beat OSU once.

  15. Wait…are you sure you don’t want a first time head coach to go with a first time Offensive Coordinator and first time defensive coordinator…ya, neither do we. Bears fan !

  16. He did the bare minimum at U of M. Was a great team last season, but there all going to the NFL, so Harbaugh thought about Michigans season next year, and though I’ll go to anyone that takes me. Michigan cuz his salary dramatically last year because of under performance. If the Lions have a good offseason, it would be fun to watch them beat on the Vikes.

  17. I guess I will now have to focus my sports hatred on the Minnesota Vikings. (Seahawks fan)

  18. Funny how it’s bad for Flores to beef with his GM, but Harbaugh gets a second chance after he clashed with his GM.

Hmmm, talk about trying to jam a square peg into a round hole. A. Harbough was far more successful than BF. BF didn’t even have a winning record nor a playoff appearance. B. Flores would have been hired in this cycle or the next, for sure, but he decided to go the martyr route instead because someone was mean to him.

  19. It’s funny how quickly people will claim racism when black coaches don’t get hired…. completely ignoring the fact that most of these franchises have already, recently, had black coaches.

  20. Jim’s too old to relate to the college boys now and doesn’t use social media outlets to recruit like all the young coaches now. A consultant at UM told him to start getting more active on Instagram, Tik Tok, and Twitter and reach out to the HS recruits and he was like, “I’m out.”

  21. Harbaugh and Kwesi are both Stanford guys, not sure if they were there at the same time or not? We all know how much respect Harbaugh has for the suits, I can only imagine how stoked he is to have a smart young former walk-on NCAA athlete as his GM instead of Baalke. Vikings are appointment TV for me now.

World Class meeting World Class. Only good things happen from this…

    ———-

World class requires championships. Both have neither.

  23. Harbaugh will have to win that Super Bowl within 5 years (maybe4) cuz that’s his standard expiration date.

  24. Harbaugh has parlayed his one decent season at Michigan into an NFL job and because of the timing has screwed Michigan, his Alma Mater! Michigan will have a hard time recruiting and bouncing back from this in the short term. Harbaugh did do a good job at Stanford and used that to get the San Fran job. He rode a very talented San Fran D to the Super Bowl. I haven’t seen him develop an NFL quarterback yet. Alex Smith was average and Kap had 2 decent seasons while the NFL sturggled figuring out the read option. Kap was never a very good NFL QB. I hope Harbaugh does well, I just don’t understand all the hype from the fans and media. It’s as if this is a sure thing great hire. I don’t see it

  25. The NFC is the safe bet to make the playoffs. Smart move and can avoid going against his brother as well

  26. My Vikings always a day late and a dollar short, should’ve grabbed Demeco Ryans when they had the chance. Demeco’s defense plays with a fire and I’m sure he would’ve bought that to the entire (Defense, Offense, Special Teams) Minnesota Vikings team!

  27. Nothing like destroying your legacy leaving a flaming dumpster pile at your alma mater. Classy Harbaugh. Real classy. He has shown his true colors.

  28. Can’t wait to see the SKOL version of ” Who’s got it better then us ” 😂😂😂

    Bravo!

  30. Anyone tossing the Flores thing into this doesn’t know the Vikings. Long history of diversity with the Vikings. Denny Green & Leslie Frazier as head coaches, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah now as the GM, Big Ten Conference Commissioner Kevin Warren was the Chief Operating Officer of the Vikings before jumping over to his current job. The Vikings have had diversity in all of those positions when most other teams have had none. You can hate on the Vikings all you want. But do not say they don’t believe in diversity.

  31. I wonder if he will get the 10 year, $120M and full roster control that he wanted from the Bears. The Bears did not think he was worth the risk.

  32. Interesting that the moment Jim’s name got floated with the Vikings job, he has now become the favorite to get the job. This is exactly why FLores is suing. These teams already know who they want to hire, these interviews are a sham.

  33. Harbaugh turns this team into a winner in about 1.5 years. I think he’d be a great hire.

  34. Does this mean we can send Matt Rhule back to school now?? Please for the love of god take him UM!

  35. This team is gonna mess up the nfc north! Congratulations vikings fans..as long as trent baalke stays away. SF would have won at least 2 championships under harbaugh if it weren’t for trent baalke!

  36. Luckily enough, the Ohio teams are in the other conference. Good luck with that QB though.

  37. He’s getting out of town and letting his successor get nuked by Ohio State after all that trash talking he did. I found it strange he would publicly antagonize Day with the “3rd base” comment and thought then he’s leaving to the NFL.

  38. Took a team that was loaded with high 1st round picks far. Vikings had a good draft a couple of years ago but their roster was nothing like Harbaugh inherited.

  39. Another coach coming thinking he’s going to take down the Packers. Good luck with that!!!

But here’s the thing. That doesn’t mean racism. It means they are complying with the rules set by the NFL. Is it unfair? Sure. Is it racist? No. Unless the Vikings specifically tell us they refuse to hire a black coach, it’s not racism. That’s why people can’t get on board with it. Even with Flores, none of his allegations are outright racism. They may be unfair but it isn’t racist. And in his case the Giants had interviewed 2 black coaches before Flores.

  41. I’m just not sure if this is a good thing or a very bad thing. The guy just seems so damn weird.

    Zzzzzzzzz

    Jealous are we?

  43. Unless Jim is brinking a young Aldon Smith, Patrick Willis, Navorro Bowman, Peak Kap, etc. along with him. Those 49ers teams were loaded. You don’t just come across a roster like that.

  44. I am thriled. First he leaves Mich and gosh I hope the AD finds a black charismatic HC who can recruit top talent and doesnt get lazy and promote some jerk already on the staff.
Second, I think Hairball will totally screw up the Vikes for years to come so I win there too.

  45. Appears Stephen Ross loses out in his chase for Jim Harbaugh a second time. It’s pretty bad when the wafting aroma of rotting fish in South Florida can be smelled all the way up to Ann Arbor.

  46. Michigan by the way would be lucky to be 5-7 next year and Jimbo knew that. All the talent along with a great d coach have exited stage left so they were due to come back down to earth and be below avg again. Good time to bail.

  47. Harbaugh took the 49ers to the Super Bowl with a QB that only started 10 games prior. If he was able to coached up Colin Kaepernick to make it to the super bowl just think of what he could do with Cousins.

Demeco Ryans declined the second interview and told them he is staying with San Fran

  49. As if Packer fans had to have another reason to dislike the Vikings!! This will top it off.

  50. Vikings better strike while the iron is hot.

History shows Vikings will improve immediately but players, staff, etc. will tire of his antics in a few short years.

  51. Anyone screaming racism or bringing up Flores is an idiot. Harbaugh is a proven winning coach. Of course the team knows who they want to hire, they want the best chance of winning. Flores is a loser. Harbaugh made Kaepernick look like a stud and went to the super bowl. Bienemy and Leftwich are great coordinators, that doesn’t mean they will be good as a head coach. They will get their chance with someone eventually. The Vikings want to win, not to experiment. If you want to win you pick the known winner, it’s really that simple.
