Jim Harbaugh wants Vikings; do Vikings want Jim Harbaugh?

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, by virtue of the fact that he’s interviewing for an NFL job on national signing day, clearly wants to coach the Minnesota Vikings. But do the Vikings want him?

Per a league source, Harbaugh has no yet been offered the job. He believes, we’re told, that he needs to win the job during Wednesday’s interview.

Harbaugh has new G.M. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah in his corner. Which should be enough. As we’ve said in connection with the Vikings, Bears, and Giants, these teams need to let their General Managers hire the coaches they want. The coach-G.M. relationship is critical to the functionality of a franchise. They need to be on the same page.

What better way to do it than to let the G.M. hire the coach he thinks he’d work well with?

There may indeed be others in the Minnesota organization who are leery about Harbaugh. With all due respect to any of those people, what has the team won while you’ve been there? It’s for ownership to understand the human factors that may cause some who feel threatened by change to get on board with it, if change is going to nudge the Vikings in the direction that ownership hopes they will go.

  1. Neither Harbaugh nor the Vikings have won a Super Bowl so they’re perfect for each other.

  2. Should they want him? He had a good little run with the 49ers, but there’s a reason that situation became completely unworkable.

  3. Does the Flores lawsuit affect Harbaugh’s chances? Regardless of the veracity of the claim, does the presence of the lawsuit alter all the remaining searches?

  4. There’s a lot of power plays and positioning in the football world. You never know if they’re serious about a job or if it is leverage with their current employer, or just wanting to feel wanted / see what’s out there. Teams aren’t the only ones that look out for themselves and move their pieces.

  5. The Vikings can pull any coaches name out of a hat and miss the championship year after year…. So it really doesn’t matter who they sign as a head coach

  6. Mr personality thinks too highly of himself. Wonder if knows they are planning other interviews so obviously he aint the pick yet. I hope they take him because it will screw this team up for a few years. Michigan needs to find a new hc who can recruit the top players, The best he could do was one or two four stars, mostly three’s. The speed guys and top five stars all went to OSU.

  7. Harbaugh is like Trump – you either love him or you hate him. Similarly, he gets things done and pisses people off in the process.

  8. If they don’t hire him, they don’t want to win. They’ll be the same old loser franchise they’ve been where other priorities and side items will be the order of the day so long as butts fill seats and occasional playoffs appearances are the norm.

  9. If the new GM truly wants Harbaugh, he should be free to hire him. It would completely undercut Adofo-Mensah if he is forced to choose someone else.

  10. The Bears were Harbaugh’s first choice to return to the NFL. He reportedly wanted the Jon Gruden $100 million contract and that was that. You have to wonder if this is a negotiation ploy to get money out of Michigan.

  11. They might yet pivot and bring back Chili- they need that kickass offense working like clockwork.

  12. I’m no Harbaugh fan, but the reason that situation became unworkable just got fired after creating a clown show in Jacksonville.

  13. Of course the Vikes want him. He fits the entire criteria that the organization has laid out in their vision to the fans. Successful coach who has been a consistent winner.

The only thing that “doesn’t line up” is the alleged “he is hard to work with” rumors that came out under Yorkie & Baalke. Anyone think Mensah has insight on that?

It appears that they are in final negotiation stages.

Can’t wait to see all the Khakis at the Bank this year! KHAKIS FOR HARBAUGH!

  14. After Brian Flores exposed those Belichick text messages the Vikings are going to have to make their Head Coaching search look a little more thorough.

  15. He wanted 10 years at $12M/year and full roster control from another team. They turned him down.

  16. To all Vikes loyal fans, I say this: remember 2/2/22, a pivotal day that ushers in a bright era of football. You have suffered too long. Now is your time for joy. Scoff at the naysayers. There will be many. Just smile and nod.

To all Fackers “fans”, I say this: a 1970s style decade of misery and ineptitude starts today. After AA Ron splits, you won’t even have the chance to do your classic one and done choke job. Harbaugh will ensure it. Ain’t that comforting?

It’s time: better football for better people.

  17. Kinda get the feeling that Michigan forcing him to take a pay cut for the 2021 season didn’t sit as well as UM reported.

  18. Who cares? The Packers fired their ST Coordinator, so the North is already locked up!

  19. Well Harbaugh better hope he gets it. The reason why college coaching hires tend to be so sudden and out of the blue (Riley to USC, Kelly to LSU, etc.), is that it the process has to be hush-hush until the end lest it be used against you in recruiting wars that you have one foot out the door. This will absolutely be used against him should he stay at Michigan now.

  20. As a person who took over a company in 2016. I told the staff my vision for the future and told them that not all of you are going to be apart of that. Of the 16 employees only 2 are left from that change.

  21. Maybe Ziggy has been the meddling owner. Maybe he’s the problem in the background. If Harbaugh is Kwesi’s choice,… why is Ziggy meddling ?
NFL Owners are horrible personnel people. They’ve proved it time and time again. Hire the best people you can and leave them alone to do what they were hired to do.

  22. As a 49er fan you will LOVE LOVE him for the first two years. After that it will be diminishing returns. His record speaks for itself but he is a very strange man.

  23. Truly great coaches win everywhere they coach with multiple QB’s like Tuna and Harbaugh, vs guys like Belichick and Shanny, whose only success was with one HOF QB they rode hard. When you look at what he did with the niners being literally one play from winning the SB with Kaepernick!! That’s unbelievable.

  24. I can’t think of a better captain for Viking fan’s next delusion than Jim Harbaugh.

  25. The best he could do was one or two four stars, mostly three’s. The speed guys and top five stars all went to OSU.

What was the score from last fall? I guess JH must be one heck of a coach is what you are really saying if his 3 stars BURIED a roster of 4 and 5 stars loaded with speed.

  27. So the Ravens have John Harbaugh who is essentially the Chocolate Babka of the Harbaugh family. The Vikings if they hire Jim will be getting Cinnamon Babka of the Harbaugh family.
If/when the Vikings play the Ravens The Vikings will be showing up with the lesser Babka. The answers to all of life’s mysteries can be found in Seinfeld re-runs.

  28. Yes, the GM should be empowered to hire the teams Head coach. This is the only way for the organization to benefit long term. Unfortunately, owners were once millionaires but are all now Billionaires. With that comes the desire for immediate results. They often don’t care about the damage done when they undermine their GM by deciding who’ll be their Head Coach. The few “Good organizations” in the NFL understand this and prefer to function for the long haul. Understanding your role and given authority that matches responsibility is the only way to go but most owners either don’t care or surprisingly don’t get it.

  29. 10 years / $120 million? Not much to pay considering they will now be favored in and will win the next 10 Super Bowls!! SKOL Faithful!!!!

  30. As a Packers fan, I would just pray for this hire! Harbaugh will come in and clean house. Make the team formidable then every thing will implode in 4 years! Then they will be back at the drawing board again! Make it happen!

  31. If you want results, you hire him now. If you want to coddle the feelings of everyone in the building of a losing organization, maybe not.

  32. I’m not a Vikings fan but have been a fan of the coaching Harbaugh does. He took USD and private college team to a few winning seasons. Did the same with Stanford and the 9ers and now Michigan. He would do good with the Vikings. Bring him on.

  33. Mr personality thinks too highly of himself. Wonder if knows they are planning other interviews so obviously he aint the pick yet. Must be a good coach if this is true. Damn good year for a bunch of no talents. Fortunately, in the NFL you have the draft.

There’s a lot of tough talk out of a team that just went one and done with the league MVP leading their team.

  35. Some in the building being “leery” of Harbaugh is based on what, exactly? All the guy does is win.

  36. Two years of solid, winning play. Then the players get sick of being treated like kids and it goes in the toilet. We have seen this show.

  37. If you read the stuff from MI insiders, York has been trashing Harbaugh to all the owners (even though insiders blame Baalke), and the Vikes have a minority owner that is a former MI grad that doesn’t want Harbaugh on the Vikes (interestingly that same guy has had his on-field pass yanked by MI). Sounds like Harbaugh has to sell himself as much as the Vikes do.

  38. Hiring Harbaugh will be a disaster for the Vikings. His prior NFL success was due to what he walked into in SF – a really good defense, not what he built. And then he got run out of there for being toxic. His track record at Michigan speaks for itself – one good season in eight years. But the Vikings are going to Vikings and they will take him and overpay him with a 10 year guaranteed contract. This all reminds me of the Cousins signing – minimal track record and huge guaranteed contract.

  39. He is a great, great coach. I can only imagine how good he will be with a GM who isn’t Trent Baalke and is familiar with him.

He may even be able to turn Kirk Cousins into a winner.

  40. Truly great coaches win everywhere they coach with multiple QB’s like Tuna and Harbaugh, vs guys like Belichick and Shanny, whose only success was with one HOF QB they rode hard.
    ============

Shanahans rode his running game to greatness. Elway was a shell of his former self.

And the system continues to dominate 20 years later, in a pass happy era.

  41. Patrick Graham ended up have a whopping nine hour interview for the the Viking HC job yesterday. This has to raise the level of concern about whether they think Harbaugh is the answer.

  42. Be careful what you wish for. There is a price to pay that comes along with this guy. Kind of like making a deal with the devil.

  43. A GM without an ego could probably make this work. Harbaugh will never give up his ego and it’ll get nasty in 4 years if the GM can’t let him do his thing.

  44. as a 49er fan I was sad when we lost him…I want him back. One of the best football coaches at any level

  45. His time ended in SF because of Baalke. Ownership made the wrong call, but water under the bridge with Shanny and Lynch at the helm. Vikings would do well to get him in house.

  46. I have to wonder what Harbaugh’s recrutes at Michigan think? I am so glad the Bears looked the other way on old Jimbo.

  47. When the coach (or the owner) is bigger than the team, it’s a recipe for failure. Vikings would be best advised to proceed with caution.

  48. There are very egotistical sports media personalities in the MSP market, especially the old guard of them, 2-3 of them have made careers out of calculatingly agitating around everything to do with the team, good and bad.

It will be a short honeymoon and no doubt Harbaugh’s persona will lead to sparks.
