NFL contends Tiffani Johnston’s allegations against Daniel Snyder are “new”

In a roundtable hearing before Congress on Thursday, former Washington employee Tiffani Johnston accused Washington Commanders owner Daniel Snyder of unwelcome physical contact and an unwanted advance during and after a business dinner. Snyder called the allegations “outright lies.”

According to the NFL, Johnston’s allegations were not made as part of the 10-month investigation conducted by attorney Beth Wilkinson.

“The NFL is reviewing and will consider Ms. Johnston’s allegations as we would any other new allegations regarding workplace misconduct at the Washington Commanders,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a statement issued after Thursday’s session. “We will determine any further action as appropriate.”

It’s unclear why Johnston didn’t cooperate with the investigation, given her willingness to testify publicly today. Regardless, the appropriate further action is simple, and clear. If Wilkinson truly hasn’t already investigated Johnston’s claims, Wilkinson should be re-engaged to do so now. And the league should not hide Wilkinson’s ultimate determination as to whether Johnston or Snyder are telling the truth.

Former Washington employee Jason Friedman corroborated Johnston’s claims. He can be interviewed, too. Along with anyone else who may have any relevant information to share. That’s the right and proper way to proceed. And it’s also right and proper to announce the findings, not bury them.

  1. I’d be sort of stunned if she was willing to come before Congress publically, but didn’t testify to Wilkinson. This feels like the NFL’s “out” to re-engage on the issue, after bungling it the first time by claiming privacy was the reason they weren’t releasing the information. Considering Johnston’s allegations are corroborated by someone, barring some sort of odd revelation, there has to be more punishment coming down the line.

  2. Very interesting how we could be witnessing a changing of the guard in the league. It’s very possible, in the near future that Denver, Miami, and Washington could be up for sale

  3. I hope it’s true, not for her sake, but for the sake of the franchise. It’d be impossible for Goodell and the NFL to bury this and will have to finally force him to sell and free our franchise from the hell of his regime!

  4. You know those times when you become aware of someone and you get that sense that there’s something that’s just not quite right about them? I know some label it envy or jealousy, but it happens way more often with billionaires and it ain’t because I don’t envy everyday people that I’ve met.

  5. The NFL bungled that investigation by never issuing the full report and now it is coming back with a vengeance.
The ongoing WFT issue + Brian Flores + the lack of hiring of minority candidates, this should be a fun offseason for Goodell and Co

  6. The NFL is so two-faced on misconduct. If a billionaire owner does it, “protecting the shield” means exactly opposite of what it would for a player.

  7. Is there a text from Belicheck about this?

That’s apparently the only proof required these days.

  8. It’s unclear why Johnston didn’t cooperate with the investigation, given her willingness to testify publicly today.

It is highly questionable that these allegations weren’t brought up during a 10 month investigation and instead weaponized in a public forum. It’s one thing to say I reported this and was ignored it’s another to say I’ve been sitting on this for the right moment where I could do the most public damage. The same thing with Jason Friedman as apparently he knew of this and said nothing as well.

  9. We all know the WFT investigation was a joke right from the beginning. They cannot be trusted to investigate anything that could make the league or it’s owners looks bad. The league is run by ultra rich people who will say and do anything to protect themselves.

  10. It is very reassuring the NFL will be investigating itself when it comes to game fixing and sexual misconduct charges against several owners. I look forward to deciphering all the leagues redactions.

  11. Well when others have come forward and you have the opportunity to tell your side and to be almost fully believed by the public being that you wouldn’t be the only 1 coming forward BUT instead you dont come forward and hide what supposedly happened til much later for no apparent reason is truly damaging to your credibility.

    Nobody believes the NFL

I’m not so sure about that. LMFAO. When the NFL was making up their allegations against the Patriots about air pressure 31 fan bases praised the NFL as the epitome of honesty and integrity.

  13. The NFL needs to start practicing what they preach. “Protect the Shield” is a sham. Goodell has certainly made the NFL money, (Although, I tend to believe the huge rise in popularity of the NFL directly correlates with the popularity of fantasy football), but he has been at the helm for some of the worst controversies. If the owners had any sense they would do whatever is necessary to protect the legitimacy of their league. Including, ousting a few of their own.

  14. Have you ever worked for someone that you feared would mercilessly retaliate against you? I have. I saw it happen. You keep your head down and continue on until you can put yourself in a situation where you cannot be retaliated against and then you speak. On top of that, her instincts were correct. The NFL did it’s investigation and the only one who suffered punishment was Jon Gruden!! She saw that the NFL swept the whole thing under the rug and said I can no longer be silent and that’s when she spoke up. But please let’s keep on with the “blame the victim mentality” that perpetuates a system where women are afraid of coming forward in cases of sexual assault and rape.

  15. It’s outright lies Snyder says! Anyone with even a modicum of common sense wouldn’t expect anything different from the man right?. I mean, if Snyder had said yeah, it’s true so what? We would have been shocked.

  16. And he even approved the ugliest uniform ever. And that includes the buccaneer’s creamsicle uniforms. Throw the bum out.
