Aaron Rodgers says he’ll make a decision “pretty quick”

USA TODAY Sports

On Thursday night Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers won his fourth NFL MVP award. After collecting the trophy, he addressed whether he’ll be known as “Packers quarterback” by the middle of March.

“I’ve got some decisions to make for sure,” Rodgers told Taylor Bisciotti of NFL Network. “Yesterday was like the first day that kind of felt like the offseason. . . . I’m gonna enjoy the next couple weeks. And, you know, I’ve had good conversations with Green Bay and I’ll, you know, do some contemplating and then make a decision here pretty quick.”

He’s previously said he’ll make a decision before free agency, which starts in fewer than five weeks. Now that the coaching carousel has stopped spinning, it’s time for the quarterback carousel to start churning. Last year, the Rams had figured out their quarterback situation by January 30, with an unofficial trade for Matthew Stafford. If Rodgers wants a trade (and we still think he will), the time is now to get it worked out before seats begin to fill elsewhere. The Packers also need to know what’s going on, so that they can make their plans for 2022 accordingly.

Then again, teams that think they may a shot at Rodgers will likely wait for him to make his decision before pivoting to other choices.

The teams to watch continue to be the Broncos, Raiders, Steelers, and Buccaneers. The Titans and 49ers would be fascinating options. Tennessee would have to be willing to deal with Ryan Tannehill‘s contract (if they can get Rodgers, they should regard that as the proverbial “good problem to have”), and Green Bay would have to be willing to deal with Rodgers as the quarterback of an NFC rival, if he wants to be the bridge from Jimmy Garoppolo to Trey Lance. (The 49ers would have a hard time finding trade assets, unless they’re willing to part with someone like Nick Bosa or George Kittle.)

At the end of the day, look for Rodgers to get what he wants. Whatever you think of him after a year in which he made himself, deliberately or not, into one of the most polarizing figures in all of sports, he’s earned the right to pick his next team.

  1. Yep let me think he would be great in Tampa he could follow up Tom and lay an egg there also.

  2. Aaron Rogers is going nowhere, he won’t get treated any better that he does right there in Green Bay. That’s where he’s made his bones and he knows it-signed super long time NFC favorite team in NFC North and it’s not the Packers.

  3. The Broncos seem to make the most sense but does Rodgers fancy his chances against Mahomes, Herbert and a Raiders team who made the play-offs this season? I think out of all the options available his best chance of success is to stay where he is and that’s what I think he will do.

  4. Please just trade him, franchise Adams and trade him, trade bakhtiari, turner, let z smith go, let Crosby go, draft another quarterback to compete with love,

  5. All Rodgers is looking for a place that provides unlimited access to the highest speed internet to keep current on all the bogus conspiracy theories and unlimited tinfoil for his hats . Thinking he’s looking for a warmer climate , tinfoil gets mighty cold on your head in the frozen tundra , lol .

  6. Let the fans of the league help you out Aaron. Outside of Wisconsin NOBODY likes you. Do us all a favour and hang them up. #overrated

  7. Sometimes the almighty NFL management deserves a slap in the face but only a few can pull it off.

  8. I am not a Packers fan. They can accommodate Rodgers to an extent, but ultimately they need to do what is best for the team. The Lions trading Stafford to another NFC team didn’t matter all that much as they were years away from contending. Plus the Rams put the best offer on the table. The Packers are already contenders and as such may be very unwilling to trade Rodgers to an NFC contender. If the Packers best offer comes from an AFC team they should take it regardless of Rodgers preferred destination.

  9. What about the Commanders? They have the defensive pieces in place (if they can get back to form), a pretty good running game and VERY good #1 WR in Terry. They also have a decent #1 draft pick (#11) THIS year.

  10. Aaron Rodgers: I’ll go wherever I can win a fifth MVP…forget about that Super Bowl thing…

  11. They most likely don’t want him going to an NFC team so that leaves the Browns, Steelers, Broncos, Raiders and Miami. I’m going to say the Raiders or Titans then Carr or Tannehill goes to the Steelers.

  12. I never thought I would think or say this but at this point I wish he would just go away. I thought the world of him but his actions over the past couple of years has got me to this point. Retire already and just fade away.

  13. If a team wants a 4-time MVP who chokes in the playoffs (losing 9 playoff games since winning his one and only Super Bowl 12 years ago), then Rodgers is your man. That team just needs to accept that they will be getting a surly, me-first, smartest man in the room, stat machine who is more interested in collecting MVP’s than titles kind of a player.

  14. As a Bucs fan I don’t want Rogers coming here and trying to follow Brady’s act. Even if we won it would feel cheap. I think I would rather lose without Aaron Rogers than win with him. He’s just not a likable guy.

  15. Oh please! Will this DIVA EVER stop boring us with his theatrics? Will he leave… won’t he leave… where will he go, etc. Yawn! Wake me up when this headline grabbing egomaniac makes a decision. Sooooooooo sick of hearing about his silly deliberations. IF/WHEN he finally ends this continuous tease of his let me know. Until then I don’t care to see or hear any more about this jerk….

  16. This deva is not going anywhere. He will continue to be the best in the regular season, but a BUST in the playoffs.

  17. Be interesting to see if Aaron goes the Brady route to win a Super Bowl by signing a team friendly deal or tries to break the bank.

  18. As far as getting a new, huge contract, he has applied a great amount of pressure. This has always been a cash shakedown.

  19. He can’t like that Brady’s retirement, non retirement, official retirement, and then quasi potential end of retirement is upstaging him. .

  20. The Packers salary cap doesn’t have a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow regardless of what Rodgers wants.

  21. To stay where you are because it wasn’t the team that let you down…. you blew it. you owe it to the team not to leave.

  22. Re: the ‘Niners. Rodgers seems to have communicated pretty loudly that he is nobody’s “bridge.”

  23. he lost his first playoff game as the top seed.
    .
hes not the answer to anyone problem unless their problem is they have to much money and not enough drama

  24. GB has some free agency issues to work, namely Adams. But, on paper, there isn’t an obviously better team out there.

  25. Knowing Aaron he will likely announce his decision about noon on Super Bowl Sunday since he likes to be the center of attention.

  26. Full disclosure, Rodgers has been my number 1 QB the last two years. That being said, perhaps the criteria for league MVP should be reexamined. Eleven fewer TD’s and one fewer INT from the previous season?? I had Taylor over Rodgers and Kupp taking it home with an historic triple crown season for the WR position.

I live in Florida. Only been to Wisconsin to watch a game. I love the guy. I think he is the best that has ever played. He should decide whatever he wants to do. He deserves it.

  28. So if the Packers dont trade him now will he play just one more year and then retire? this isnt a young man we are talking about,he is old and slow footed and very close to retirement so do the Packers want great value now for him or just wait until he retires officially, probably after this season.hope they look at the big picture and their future and trade him now for a huge haul.

  29. He needs to act quickly. Joe Rogan rapidly falling out of favor and may not be available to decide for him.

  30. His trade value will never be hire. GB can try another Super Bowl all in with a QB near retirement age, and suffer years of mediocrity afterward, of get a serious jump on the future with what they can get for him now. I say the all in Super Bowl run was this year, and it fell short, but was their best chance, time to think ahead.

  31. No player has ever earned the right to pick where they play when they are under contract. Organizations represent themselves and do what’s best for their team. Players feelings and the feelings of their fans don’t play a role.

Do you really think the Packers are “contenders” if they trade Rodgers and still have to let key players go to free agency since they are so over the cap?

    Brady Jr.

    lol

    Good riddance!

    ———

Brady has 7 SB wins versus Rogers’ 1. Please don’t even mention the two of them in the same sentence.

  34. I know a few things about football. The Packers are the most successful team in NFL history with an unprecedented 13 World Championships. And they know how to get HOF and MVP play out of their QB’s.

As a fan/owner, it is indeed humbling to be so incredibly privileged.

  35. The Packers still hold his contract rights through 2023.

Rodger’s leaving isn’t a sure thing at all.

  36. The Pack is already $54mil over the cap for 2022 so if Rodgers does stay in GB their roster won’t look anything like it did in 2021 since they’d have to shed some serious talent to get under the cap OR they could trade Rodgers after Jun 1 and get hit with $19.2mil in dead money but it’d save them $27.5mil in cap space! So they can keep Rodgers and rape the team of talent or trade Rodgers get a few picks and save $27.5mil in cap space, I think it’s a no brainer, BYE Arron.

The problem is with the money he’s owed(cap cost to his new team) and the few teams that have the draft capitol to make a deal, add them up and it makes his market is very small!

  37. Rodgers. He’s like the hottest girl in high school that you get to know and then you get to know her and realize she’s an insecure mess, amd you feel kind of disappointed and revolted. He’s totally screwed. He’s been exposed as a postseason choker, and the Rams own rhe NFC amd if he goes to Denver, the rest of the division is playoff strong. And we k ow how he does in the playoffs

And I might add, that without Brady, BB has proved absolutely nothing other than he needs Brady to win in the postseason

  39. Once again, Rodgers plays the media for fools, and they follow him around like lap dogs.

How about ignoring the guy until he makes a decision? Then report on the actual news. Until that happens Rodgers will say nonsensical things that mean nothing.

  40. I wonder if the Packers have given Rodgers and his agent the opportunity to talk with other teams. Personally,… I’d be surprised if Rodgers stays in GB. And on top of that,… why kick the salary cap issues down the road. At some point you’ve got to pay off that big credit card statement. I think there’s a mutual parting of ways. And not a messy one either. Both sides know “It’s Time”.

  41. I think Rodgers would be a perfect fit for the Steelers. And I’m not a fan of the player or the team.

  42. Rodgers claims that he love the guys that he plays with…told Matt LeFleur how much he appreciates him in his MVP acceptance speech last night. So what is it that he wants? Is he still blaming others for the Packers failure to advance in the post season? If that’s the case, then he should just leave. The fans seem pretty fed up with his act at this point. Oh, and from a female’s perspective, he really should get a haircut.

  43. When the NFL itself acknowledges you as the best football player on the planet in a landslide vote, it magnifies your value in ways the average fan could never fathom. You are worth more to your team, and you are worth more to any potential trade targets.

Today, as NFL fans worldwide pay homage to footballs greatest player, Aaron can take great pride in being better than everyone else. And decisions on his future can wait until another day.

Between Favre and Rodgers, the Packers have won 2 Super Bowls. That is since 1996. They may have been MVP’s, and Favre a HOFer, but that’s not a whole lot of recent success.

  47. He’ll be back.

Once again I’ll enjoy every second of it, until we arrive at the scene of the crash.

  48. I am a Packers fan! Don’t care if he stays or goes at this point! If I were to bet he stays! However, they will never trade him to an NFC team for sure! They can still get value for him. If he is traded still need to get a veteran Qb! The team is still contending but not with Love!

You’re wrong about the Stafford trade . Carolina offered The 8th pick in the 2021 draft along with Bridgewater and a 3rd round pick . Another team offered 2 1st round picks earlier then the Rams 2022 and 2023 1st rounders the Lions took . Stafford made it clear he preferred the Rams .The Lions went back to the Rams agreed to take Goffs $50M guaranteed deal off the Rams hands to get them to agree to sweeten their original offer of a 3rd round pick in 2021 along with a 1st rounder in 2022 to also include a 2023 1st round pick. To be clear the Lions didn’t take the best deal for the organization they took the deal that made Stafford happy .

If the Packers best offer comes from an AFC team they should take it regardless of Rodgers preferred destination.

    ——————————————————————————-

No team is going to give up lots of trade value for Rodgers if Rodgers doesn’t want to be there and if he won’t sign a contract extension. If the Packers want to trade Rodgers, they are stuck with him having veto power over it.

  51. This reminds me of the Brett Favre, will I or won’t I play (retire). The difference is who the Packers have waiting now verses then. They could afford to be firm then. But today………..Rogers is calling the shots like it or not.

  52. “The teams to watch continue to be the Broncos, Raiders, Steelers, and Buccaneers.”

Brady assessed the situation in Tampa and decided to retire. Rodgers isn’t going there.

  53. After this Sunday, he will have played in as many Super Bowls as Matt Stafford and Joe Burrow. Congrats!

  54. @cover32, I tend to agree with your assessment of Cooper Kupp as MVP rather than Rodgers, and I’m a Niners fan so it pains me to say so. But Kupp was awesome this year and deserving. Rodgers regular season achievements always seem a little less impressive when you factor in his repeated early playoff exits.

  55. 3 pieces of advice for Rodgers AND Brady;

    1. Please Go away

    2. Please stay away

    3. Please don’t come back

  56. Pack doesn’t want to let him go, AR doesn’t want to go! He just waited for the MVP for more negotiating power…!!!

  57. What they really need to do is keep Rodgers and fix the Defense and special teams and make one more run.

I think Rodgers would be a perfect fit for the Steelers. And I’m not a fan of the player or the team.

Steelers don’t need a loaner or temp. In 60 years of watching them I don’t think they’ve ever had an “interim” QB. They may not succeed but they tend to go “all-in” long term with a replacement. Rogers is a diva. if he moves it’s one year tops.

  59. Whatever he decides, a playoff loss awaits. Time to start calling the MVP award the QB regular season award because that is all it is has ever been.

  60. Wanna-be cap wizards; You’re wasting your keystrokes and everyone’s time.

The Packers will be under the cap in 3 moves. Cutting 2 aging LBs, and a WR who barely contributed.

  61. I’m sounding like a broken record — he may be a lousy person, but he’s an MVP/HOF QB that will be good for at least 3 more years — if the Pack trades him they’ll be an average team at best. Packer fans have had the incredible privilege to have 2 HOF QBs back-to-back, and it ain’t gonna happen a 3rd time, so be careful what you wish for.

  62. I am amazed at how dillusional some of the talking heads “experts” and GB fans seem to be. They are talking about 3 first round picks, perhaps with a top level palyer…seriously? He will turn 39 during the next season, is not loved by his fan base, and has shown that while he is great in some games he is pretty aweful in others at this point in his career. When you combine all of that with his salary hit, I think his actual trade vaule is MUCH lower.

  63. If he’s even half as smart as he thinks he is, he’d stay in the NFC. There’s no way he’s getting through Allen, Burrow, Mahomes, Herbert on the way to the Super Bowl.

Knowing Aaron he will likely announce his decision about noon on Super Bowl Sunday since he likes to be the center of attention.

    ____________________________
Kind of like the baseball A-Rod when he announced that he was opting out of his Yankees contract right in the middle of the Red Sox/Rockies World Series. There must be something about that nickname that makes them want to upstage their sport’s biggest event. They love attention. It would not surprise me.

  65. This diva rarely ever tell’s the truth hopefully this drama queen is not a long doesn’t drag this out
    soon is 4 to 6 weeks so odd’s are he won’t .

  66. For everyone saying his best chance is where he currently is well that’s not really accurate. With the team he just had they couldn’t get thru the 49ers, likely wouldn’t have gotten thru the rams either and the packers are going to have to make hard decisions at some spots whether Rodgers is back or not. So with that said Denver with Rodgers next yr would likely have a better offense than the packers would with Rodgers. The whole “does he want to face Mahomes and Herbert twice” is ridiculous fan fodder of those who dont understand the game. As it is the Chargers weren’t even a playoff so to think with their impending free agencies like William’s they would be someone he would worry about playing twice is foolish especially with the expanded playoffs.

  67. Packers brass would be stupid not to trade this old QB who chokes come playoff time while he’s still got some descent worth 2-# 1 , 2-# 3 and a young pro bowl type player would go a long way to kick start the rebuilding process that’s coming quickly no matter what he decides.

  68. Rodgers needs to agree to a deal with a new team so he, therefore, has a veto over any deal. He only has the 2022 year left on his contract and no team will give real value for him in the absence of a multi-year deal; same with GB–it can’t keep him without a redone/extended contract. GB also needs a QB to compete w/ Love. So a team that Rodgers wants to go to must make a deal with him as well as send GB multiple picks/players which includes a competitive QB.

  69. Mad respect for Rodgers. There’s a reason he’s MVP, again. I like that he doesn’t play the media game to their liking too. Whatever team he ends up on will be better for sure, regardless of how anyone feels about him personally.

Coming from a Bucs fan that is pretty ridiculous. The Bucs have been a mostly losing franchise all-time. If Brady didn’t pick your team 2 years ago, nobody would mention Tampa as a playoff contender much less a threat to go to the super bowl. Rodgers would be perfect as the Bucs QB & would make a the Bucs a true super bowl threat immediately. No true Bucs would truthly say otherwise.
