Mac Jones not concerned about Patriots moving forward without Josh McDaniels

Mac Jones will have to adjust to losing his offensive coordinator this year. But it’s something he’s done before, and something he says he’s not concerned with handling again.

Jones played for Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels in 2021, but McDaniels left to become head coach of the Raiders. Jones told NBCSportsBoston.com that it’s par for the course for him, given that he played for three offensive coordinators at Alabama.

It’s not my first rodeo with dealing with a new coordinator,” Jones said. “At Alabama. I think back to all the different guys I’ve worked with and I have a lot of experience with learning a new — we’re gonna keep the same system but, you know, new terminology here and there. I know coach [Bill] Belichick will have a plan, and I’m looking forward to working just getting better as a player regardless of who’s out there with us.”

The Patriots have not said who their offensive coordinator will be this year, or even if they’ll give anyone the offensive coordinator title at all. Jones said he’s confident Belichick will see to it that the offense runs smoothly.

“I have no preferences honestly. I mean, like I said, I just leave it up to coach,” Jones said. “He does a good job picking the right people. He’s done that for however many years that he’s been a head coach, and that’s why I’m really happy to be with him because he always has a plan.”

Jones had an impressive rookie season, but he was not at his best down the stretch when the Patriots lost four of their final five games, counting their playoff loss in Buffalo. Whoever is calling the offensive plays in New England this year needs to get Jones back to the level he was playing at in the middle of the season, when he was looking like the league’s best rookie quarterback in 2021.

  1. Mac also trained Bill O’Brien on Bama’s playbook last spring.

That’s how advanced he is and how impressive he was handling the most difficult system and playbook as a rookie.

  2. He’s average at best. He can’t hold a candle to josh allen. He’s Andy dalton with a touch more upside. It’s going to be fun watching touchback 6 cry over the talent level between he and allen for the next 10 years. Although he will be better than Zach Wilson or Tua

  3. Plenty of coaches have left New England for head coaching jobs, and none have succeeded. But the winning continued in New England regardless of who the offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator was. The winning abruptly ended when Tom Brady went to Tampa Bay, and Tampa Bay instantly became super bowl winners. You would think just by luck one of their coaches would have succeeded, but none have. How did the defensive players feel when Matt Patricia left for Detroit? It hasn’t been that long ago, but he’s already been fired. A big guy standing on the sidelines chewing on his beard looked pretty smart when Tom Brady was there. It looked pretty ridiculous without Brady. So, we’re supposed to be surprised that a smart young man like Mac Jones doesn’t think losing McDaniels is going to matter? Well, if Mac Jones is around in New England long enough, he’ll almost certainly have another opportunity to be coached by McDaniels.

Josh Allen was, at best, wildly inconsistent for two whole seasons, damn near a bust and called so by many, Jeff George 2.0. According to those watching closely, he was an intense, time-consuming project for Daboll before he caught fire in his third year.

In their first seasons, Montana was average, Peyton Manning threw 28 interceptions. Very few of even the Hall of Famers just lit up the league like Marino in their rookie seasons. Given Mac’s numbers and poise in his first year, best to wait a few seasons before so authoritatively judging what he is going to amount to.

  5. He can’t do anything about the OC so he should focus on what he can control. We all saw the cigar smoking shirtless photo so fixing that would be a great start. Eat better and train hard and he’ll be ready for that second year jump.

That goes for everyone in New England who were already proclaiming him the heir to Brady halfway through the 1st season. The hype was through the roof

So far, the scouting on Jones has been spot on. Most pro ready, lowest ceiling. He’ll have a tough time breaking through in the AFC, where all of the great QB’s are now.

Seriously, is this your first year watching football? Josh didn’t exactly tear it up his first year.

I’d be more concerned with the fact that I have a noodle for an arm

I am also concerned that you have a noodle for an arm.

  9. Unless Belichick finds a great deep threat for Mac Jones, 2022 season will be a hell for Belichick’s believers.

  10. Mac Jones is going to be a fixture in the NFL FOR years to come, I remember Josh Allen was running more than he was throwing the 1st couple of years….give these young QBs TIME to develop in the NFL.

Not until Bills gave him Stefon Diggs, a great WR who could get behind defenders and who could stretch fields.

That is why Belichick must give Mac Jones. He won’t have money to do it, must be from draft, but at same time, defense needs to be upgrated.

  12. So few remember the absolute tatters that were the Bills offensive line in Allens Rookie season.
All of us in WNY hope that Jones is the Pats QB for years to come.

  13. As a longtime Pats fan, since 1985, watching Mac Jones familiarize himself with the NFL this year was a treat.
And I can’t wait to watch him improve in front of our eyes in 2022.
Master Bill is simply in the process of building another dynamic Patriots team, with a fast, young capable D and a multifaceted offense that along with their QB will learn and master a variety of different ways to win a ball game.
As did other versions of past Patriot teams.
Sometimes the fun is in the journey.

  14. The best part about “baby arm” Jones is that since they wasted a 1st on him they’ll stick with him even when they have to face what everyone already knows – he’s Andy Dalton 2.0, not a franchise QB.

  15. He’s average at best. He can’t hold a candle to josh allen. He’s Andy dalton with a touch more upside. It’s going to be fun watching touchback 6 cry over the talent level between he and allen for the next 10 years.

For all of Allens talent, what have the Bills accomplished so far? A couple of division titles? Big whoop. Allen was playing golf the last few weeks, not football.

Maybe next year they will do something worthy of all the bragging Bills fans do.

Mike Vrabel doesn’t seem to be doing a bad job!

  17. The Patriots are better equiped to absorb McDaniels’ loss than the Bills are with Brian Daboll’s loss. The division is wide open.
