Report: Packers move to bring back Tom Clements as Aaron Rodgers considers his future

The Packers are expected to hire Tom Clements as their new quarterbacks coach, Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network reports.

Green Bay is seeking to replace Luke Getsy, who left to become the offensive coordinator of the Bears.

Clements’ unretirement is a clear sign the Packers want to do everything possible to make Aaron Rodgers happy as he contemplates his future.

The Packers drafted Rodgers in 2005 and hired Clements as their quarterbacks coach in 2006. Clements became the team’s offensive coordinator in 2012 and spent three seasons in that role before moving into an assistant head coach role with the Packers in 2015 and 2016.

Clements, 68, didn’t coach in the NFL again until 2019. After two seasons with the Cardinals as passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Clements announced his retirement a year ago.

Now, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur apparently has enticed Clements back to the sideline.

  1. That balloon that just popped was Bronco fans realizing that Aaron Rodgers is not being traded to the Mike High City.

  2. What about hiring a coaching staff what knows what its doing? Playoff doormats is no way to play football come January.

  3. Rodgers wants a new contract and the Pack is already going into the offseason almost $54 mil over the cap. Is he going to play all 22 starting positions and kick the FGs?

You seem to think that Rodgers wanting a new contract would make the Packers salary cap situation worse. Rodgers salary cap hit next season under his current contract is $46.6 million. Any new contract would reduce that number, therefore helping the Packers salary cap situation next season.

  5. I’ve been assured repeatedly by Vikings fans that Aaron would never ever play for the Packers again.

    What gives?

The Vikings just hired ed donatell and mike pettine. 4th and 26….

  7. Highest paid QB coach in the league and if it puts #12 back in Green Bay it is worth every penny.

  8. Speaking of a coaching staff that doesn’t know what it is doing, wasn’t the entire Vikings coaching staff fired after the season?

  9. Boy, desperate times are calling for desperate measures! Don’t think $ is the main factor here. The guy wants to be on a “Big Game” winning team. It’s not going to happen with the current collection of players on his current team.

Even if they were to reduce his cap hit in half they’re still $34 mil over the cap. That doesn’t even include the rookie pool which is 8-10 mil. So what team are they going to put around him?

  11. What’s the rush? Another year of capitulation to Rodgers Diva demands so they can lose in the playoffs? The packers have Stockholm Syndrome. Nobody who doesn’t have to be involved width this guy wants to be with this guy.

  12. What they’ll need to do is replace Vince’s statue from outside Lambeau with a huge statue of my likeness, so management and fans can worship me and bring offerings. One more condition. My friend Goodell should change the name of the SB trophy from Lombardi to Rodgers. Brady may have 7 rings but I’ll have the SB trophy raised in my honor every year. Do that (in addition to all the other demands I’ve made) and I’ll play for the Packers next year.

  13. No matter how you cut it, the Packers are not going to have half the team next year that they had this year. At the end of next year, Rodgers then walks away with no compensation to the Packers, and he goes to any team that he wants. That serves no one other than the Packer brass, who feel that they will then avoid any criticism. That’s what the main goal is, avoid criticism.

  14. I wonder if Clements is really being brought in for Jordan Love. After all, Clements worked with Aaron Rodgers when he was a backup through his first several years, and then he worked with Kyler Murray when he was a rookie into his second year. Is Clements a guy who develops young passers?

  15. Anything to appease the guy who can’t advance in the post season…

    —————————————————————

I don’t know, I think winning a super bowl is a pretty nice advancement. Haters jealous that they can’t even make the postseason.

  16. If GB is so intent on keeping Aaron, they must have really missed on Jordan Love and wasted those picks when they could have actually improved the team to win now instead of, never playing for the Superbowl, as we only think 3 to 4 years in the future.

Rodgers has ONE Super Bowl, and that was back in 2011. What’s to be jealous of?

  18. I can hear the conversation now between Rodgers X and him “What do you mean your staying in GB and not coming to the Broncos and live with me in Denver”? “If you think I’m just going to sit around and wait on you arse, not happening”.

I highly doubt an almost 70 year old guy with strong ties to AR, but not really strong ties to LaFleur is coming out of retirement to coach a guy who can’t seem to throw with his feet on the ground.

  20. Rodgers is going to string the packers along because he knows they don’t have the Bs to say anything about it to him. Just more falling all over themselves to please him and kiss his butt. LaFleur did this well from the start. Gutekunst had to learn how but now he can smooch with the best of the packers mgmt

    ——————————————————————————

Lots of ways to reduce the cap. First move will be to cut Z’Darius Smith. Every team with lots of veterans has to cut players to get under the cap. It’s just been more pronounced the last two years due to revenues going down due to Covid restrictions. The Packers aren’t the only team dealing with that.

If we’re just focused on Rodgers, cutting his cap hit in half next year is going to give them more space than if they get rid of him. His dead cap hit is $26.8 million. So unless they decide they want to do what the Patriots did in the year after Tom Brady and take all the cap charges and be bad for a season, extending and restructuring Rodgers contract gives them the best chance for next season.

    AND Dom Capers.

  23. Take all of the hall of fame qbs in history. Then group them with all of the current elite qbs. Take Brady out of the equation as he is a different story.

This leaves the all of those hof’s and elites as winning, an average, 1 superbowl in their careers. And Rodgers has time left to do more.

  24. Randall Cobb is uncommitted at this time to reprise his friend of aaron’s role on the team.

  25. Aaron has asked for a “seat at the table” in personnel decisions. Maybe he had a hand in suggesting that Tom be invited back.

  26. A lot of us Packer fans really wish they would just trade him instead of going into salary cap hell for ever.

  27. In the Super Bowl era, there have been just over 700 starting QBs in the league, with 34 of them winning a Championship.
Over 95% have never won a single ring, let alone two.
Some of your more pathetic NFL franchises have never even won one in their entire sad, dull history.
To continue to bash Aaron Rodgers for “only” winning one, in what is obviously one of the world’s biggest team sports, is the epitome of ignorance.
But, what am I to expect with this crowd. 🙄

    ——————————————————————————————————————
Never mind kicking Cobb to the curb to save $7 million. He was a part time player at best last season. Za’darius Smith played in all of two games this season. A trade would save $15 million. Those are just two non factors in getting the Pack to the playoffs. There are several other contracts that can be extended or redone. Clark is set to count $20 million against the cap. An extension would free up more space. And it goes on and on…

  29. What are the Packers gonna do next for Rodgers ? Free car washes for life or bake him cookies ?

After 65 years of futility for Vikings’ fans…..everything

  31. “what are the Packers gonna do next for Rodgers ? Free car washes for life or bake him cookies.” What the Packers could do for Rodgers, the man who has everything, is to place ads for the right woman for Rodgers as he is doing a miserable job on his own.he needs a woman just as flaky as himself and I believe I have one for him, mr.Rodgers meet my ex wife,Kathy, she has alot in common with you.

  32. Rodgers is a true American that stood up to cr@zy narrative everyone has been under hypnosis about and completely duped!

Good for him, I hope where ever he goes he brings that energy with him!
