Scouting Combine ditches the bubble concept

Sometimes, collective action works — even without a union.

The NFL and the Scouting Combine, facing a threat that 157 players represented by 14 agencies would skip workouts at next week’s annual Underwear Olympics, has ditched a controversial bubble concept for Indianapolis.

The Scouting Combine has advised all that participants will be permitted to exit the “secure Combine areas during free time in your schedule . . . at your own risk.” Players who prefer to remain in secure areas will be permitted to have approved medical support personnel enter.

Also, wearing a mask while on site “is recommended, but not required” for all activities other than air travel and medical exams, during which masks remain mandatory.

The Combine has not changed the workout schedule, which has players performing the 225-pound bench press on the same day that they conduct on-field workouts.

Still, it’s a win for the Combine and for the players who will be there. They won’t be prevented from accessing their trainers and coaches, and the ill-advised concept of a bubble (given that the NFL has spent the last two months shifting from pandemic it endemic) has burst.

  1. So, now we change the rules if the participants don’t like them? Never mind that not attending wouldn’t be in their best interest. Sets a dangerous precedent. I now see this occurring at every turn in the NFL. Don’t think the players haven’t noticed. Who’s gonna be running the show and calling the shots now?

  2. Lol at all the grumpy people in here that were talking about how stupid a move this was for the players and how they’re ruining their opportunity of a life time to be drafted.

  3. this only worked because with only half the players there wouldn’t be enough tv time…a lot of money would have been lost.
    .
this has nothing to do with player safety and everything to do with Benjamin’s.
    .
when only 4 or 5 players don’t attend, it’s good for tv because it gives announcers drama to talk about… when it’s 150, e just have dad sit time.

  4. I think on principle they should sit out a year and take extra college courses. Teach the NFL a lesson. Naturally that would involve actual sacrifice, so it’s off the table. But gestures and posturing is always welcome.

I think on principle those promulgating the Covid fear should stay home another year and wear masks when at all times even when by themselves

  6. Best Decision the NFL has made in a long time. Great job players, you’re making a difference.

Don’t worry, Teddy. You can still hide in your house with mask and gloves on.

  8. This is the nature of collective bargaining, and the power of labor. That’s why I support unions and management does not.

  9. I know there is no union, but these players, which include a healthy serving of blue chippers, are represented by some very powerful agents. Didn’t even need the plyers names released who would boycott. You get clients of Rosenhaus Sports, CAA, Athletes First and a few others – it’s a pretty significant group.

We’ve entered the “pretend COVID is over” stage.

Had it a couple of weeks ago. I’ve had flus and Food poisoning episodes that were worse. Maybe people shouldn’t be fat.

It’s great that you survived. But that doesn’t mean it’s not a threat. Too many have died.

The bubble was overkill but this new solution seems evenhanded and mirrors what is happening in workplaces everywhere.

No need to go overboard with politicized opinions on it.

  12. Everyone is framing this as a “freedom wins” (lol) moment, when in fact, the league merely received assurances from its vast legal department that the odds of anyone getting sick and dying from their involvement in the event were below the threshold for legal concern.

You are being asked to wear masks in certain places because we still live in the most litigious society ever produced my humanity. It’s not really about the virus anymore. I’m sorry to break this to anyone who thinks they’re on the level of a Normandy Beach stormer by refusing to wear a mask in a store.

These prospects sign a release form before they participate. It releases the NFL from lawsuits in the case the prospect is injured at the Combine. Contracting covid at the combine would be no different.

  14. Yes of course we are in the pretend Covid is over phase being pushed by big business still 2k die a day from Covid while 90% + of them are the unvaccinated which for the uneducated that’s 1,800 + a
    day .
To equate this to a victory for freedom is laughable that these poor sheep are being used by big business to boost there profits which still is way below the pre pandemic rate only fools go on a cruise or go to indoor concerts/ movies / crowed bars and restaurants it’s all about the green in your pocket we as a people are so weak Covid will never be defeated thanks to these fake self appointed freedom fighters who will no doubt be amongst those daily 1,800 sooner or later.

Thousands of people die every day for many reasons…. The majority of Covid deaths continues to be elderly people who have already lived beyond their life expectancy
