Before he was the Super Bowl XXII MVP, Doug Williams was a star quarterback at Grambling. After his NFL career, Williams became Grambling’s head coach. But now Williams says he can’t support his alma mater.

That’s because Grambling’s new head coach, former Browns and Raiders coach Hue Jackson, has hired Art Briles as offensive coordinator, giving Briles his first college coaching job since he was fired by Baylor for his handling of sexual assault allegations against Baylor players.

Williams, who now works in the Washington Commanders front office, told the Washington Post that he doesn’t see why Grambling would hire Briles when no other school will.

“I don’t know Art Briles; I’ve never met him in my life,” Williams said. “But the situation, nobody else would hire him for whatever reason. I don’t know why Grambling State had to go be the one to hire him, so I’m not a fan at all.”

Asked if he will continue to support the Grambling football team, Williams said, “Oh, no. I can’t do that. No, no, no. If I support them, I condone it.”

Grambling hired Jackson as its next head coach in December. It is Jackson’s first job as a head coach since he was fired following a 3-36-1 tenure in Cleveland.

  1. Let’s make this simple – Art Briles condoned multiple incidents of sexual assault by his Baylor players. In fact, Briles supported and encouraged such repugnant behavior, as did the higher ups in Baylor’s administration at the time.

Doug Williams is a man of integrity for speaking out against this move by Grambling.

  2. Okay I get it, but why would Grambling hire Hue Jackson in the first place would be the first question I would ask.

  3. Let’s make this even more simple _ Doug Williams riding his high horse for moral standards while working for Daniel Snyder…..Hmmmmmmmm

  4. He’s right for speaking out against the coaching staff and front office but, the young man who play for the team didn’t do anything..support the players at least.

  5. a coach with hue’s record hiring a coach with this amount of “history” who was fired by a large university and not hired by anyone since….what could go wrong?

  6. I love Doug williams, and enjoyed watching his SB win.

I don’t quite see how he is on very firm footing on Grambling, though, while continuing to work for Dan Snyder.

  7. Why did anyone ever give a black QB a chance… because they could do the job, that’s probably why Briles got the job.

  8. When I first read this headline, I thought, “Hue has a gambling problem? Well that explains a lot!”

  9. 3-36-1. Just look at that. Look at it. The sheer ineptitude is beyond amazing.

  10. Nobody else would hire Hue Jackson other than Grambling, and likely no other team would hire Doug Williams if not for Washington.

He has no good reason to challenge this, as he stated himself.

Why in the world is this getting downvoted?

  12. Have to admire Williams’ integrity in this situation. But to play devil’s advocate for a minute, it’s a bit ironic coming from someone in the Washington front office. NOT saying Williams is guilty of anything. However, I t’s almost like Flores waiting until he was fired to say something about being offered money to lose 3 years earlier.

  13. Good for Williams. But um…quick question for you Doug. Are fans of the Commanders condoners of the sexual harassment that happened there? What about people who continue to work for that organization…are they complicit? I actually agree with Williams but the irony is a bit much here.

A man of integrity? See his Rueben Foster statement.

  15. Grambling being a HBU Im somewhat surprised they are hiring a white coach at all, and then they go and hire a D-Bag like Briles ?????? Any coach out there of any color would be a better and smarter move than this.

  16. We all don’t know what Art Briles knew or didn’t know but everyone is going off of hear say. So give the man a second chance to coach and he won’t be running the program . He’ll just be an offensive coordinator. Hugh Jackson is a smart man as is the other people in charge of Grambling state university so trust them so give this man a chance.

  17. Perhaps Doug should look around that front office and see if there’s anything happening in Snyder Land that he might not wish to condone.

  18. So, just so I understand this correctly; he only “condones” those activities when they are done at his organization (where he is being paid)? It seems a bit ironic, and hollow, that he is making a statement like this while working for Washington.

  19. So Williams wont support a team giving a guy a second chance; but will work for and take money from an ORGANIZATION that was accused of, investigated, and PAID A FINE for pretty much the same?

“Williams, who now works in the Washington Commanders front office”

  20. Everyone deserves a second chance. Think it’s a great hire. I get where Doug is coming from, but look who is at the top of the organization he works for…

  21. Why in the world is this getting downvoted?

It’s called being a hypocrite. He’s throwing stones at Briles and Gambling while working for someone who is involved in a similar thing.

Ironic and hallow? You are being too kind. Williams is a hypocrite.

  23. I’m sure Doug Williams will be equally disgusted by Watson getting a chance to redeem himself after this mess he created in Houston.

  24. First of all, this common language of “I support” or “I don’t support” is nonsense and used to a boring death.

Secondly, if you do not know Briles, if you don’t have intimate knowledge, you should probably refrain a bit from such hard judgement. What Williams, you want to banish him to the desert and have him eat grasshoppers? Doug, you are possibly the most overrated QB ever. Why? You actually were below 50% completion rate in your career, and, you barely threw for more TD’s vs interceptions. You are given a break, maybe it is time you give one.

  25. Would love a beat writer with some courage to ask Doug how he would justify, to the fans, why they should be supporting Snyder and this organization, if he is a man of principle that cares about these sorts of scandals and sees supporting them as indicative of one’s character.

He’s been a Snyder stooge for going on eight years now. In fact he’s one of the few execs to survive the latest purge, who at the least stood by while that work culture ran rampant around him. What do you think, Doug? And this is from a Washington fan….

  26. I’m sorry Doug but Daniel Snyder is your boss. I know that we as people aren’t perfect but this is kind of hypocritical.

  27. Art Briles is a proven scumbag, why WOULD a proud school such as Grambling sully its name by hiring him ? Coach Eddie Robinson must be rolling, spinning and doing somersaults in his grave after the hell he underwent to make Grambling perhaps the best-known HBCU .

  28. Doug Williams takes a paycheck from a Washington organization that has it’s own questions/issues around sexual harassment in the work place, then tries to act like a moral barometer for another team/program. Hilarious.

  29. Given Williams’ relationship with, and apparent approval of, Dan Snyder, the message to Grambling is clear. If Grambling wants Williams’ support all they have to do is pay him.

  30. “I don’t know Art Briles; I’ve never met him in my life,”

Sounds like a good reason not to hire him.
    We know why, Doug.

  31. I don’t agree with his stance of stopping support, but I do agree with him calling out the baffling hiring decision. Based on what on Hue’s resume? There has never been a more incompetent, inept coach to ever coach the game at any level. I wouldn’t hire Hue Jackson to coach my flag football peewee league. His hiring alone is text book reverse discrimination.
