Report: Cardinals aren’t expected to use franchise tag on Chandler Jones

High-end pass rushers lately hit the open market. One of them is about to.

The Cardinals aren’t expected to apply the franchise tag to veteran defensive end Chandler Jones, clearing the way for him to go wherever he wants to go in free agency. The report regarding the team’s plans comes from Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.

It’s no surprise. Given that Jones had a cap number of $20.176 million in 2021, the rules would entitle him to a 20-percent raise and, in turn, a franchise tender (and cap number) of $24.192 million for 2022. The cap-strapped Cardinals would have a hard time carrying that number into the new league year.

Jones started his contract year with a bang, racking up five sacks in Week One. He went eight weeks, however, before getting another sack. He finished the regular season with 10.5.

Regardless, someone will pay him on the open market. The game currently is primarily about great quarterback play and interrupting great quarterback play. Great pass rushers can do that. With plenty of teams having plenty of money to spend and with Jones having a recognizable name and undeniable skills, someone will pay Jones at the start of free agency — because someone always does.

  1. Welcome to Seattle, Mr. Jones. You will love the 12’s getting you an extra jump on those opposing OL!

  2. He would be an amazing acquisition for any teams needing some pressure next year. Would love to see him on the Hawks so Russ doesn’t have to run from both Aaron Donald and Chandler Jones 2x per year.

  3. AZ isn’t going to use the tag because Jones isn’t worth upwards of $25M per season. Just because AZ doesn’t plan on tagging Jones doesn’t mean they won’t resign him, they’ve said resigning him is one of their top priorities. AZ will get a deal done with Jones, pairing him with Golden again who both had 10+ sacks last season and they will very likely draft another pass rusher in a draft class loaded with quality pass rushers.

AZ also is not strapped for cash. The Cardinals will cut dead weight, guys like Jordan Phillips n Kennard come to mind creating more space but AZ is set to have $135M in cap space next year in 2023 and AZ can dip into that. AZ can sign free agents n convert this years salary into signing bonuses to keep said players 2022 cap hit low then spread that bonus out over life of contract kicking the can down the road into future years where they have much more cap space as the cap situation looks great over the next few years in the future.

  4. Offer him the same that guys with 5.5 sacks in 16 games make and figure the opener was a fluke (and a weak tackle)

  5. Jets need a edge rusher. They have the cap space. Teaming him with Williams would be amazing.

Ask Taylor Lewan if it was a fluke….. Lewan was absolutely owned and looks back on it as one of the most embarrassing days of his life.

Secondly you act as if Chandler Jones cannot get after the QB when he was among the league leaders in QB Pressures and had 26 QB Hits which is the exact same number of hits he had in 2019 when Jones had 19.5 sacks and Jones had more TFL’s last year (12) than he had in 2019 and almost the same number of forced fumbles with 6. A lot of the hits/pressures Jones had also led to sacks by his teammates as Jones flushed the QB out and into their waiting arms. Chandler Jones is still an elite all pro caliber pass rush which is why AZ wants to n will end up bringing him back for a 7th season.

  7. This recent season is a good snapshot of his career. He is out of this world once in a while but often disappears for long stretches, usually in the big games. New England made the right call trading Jones and keeping Hightower.

  8. AZ fans know Chandler Jones is one of the best at getting to the QB, but is a one trick pony. It’s a very good trick to have, and he will get paid for it, but at 32 is starting to diminish. He is a straight up liability vs the run and in coverage. Every time he was for some reason put in coverage he got burned.

The 5 game one sacks were a fluke. Taylor Lewen admitted he was not healthy enough to start the season and shouldn’t have been out there. It was obvious to anyone who watched the game. The 5.5 sacks the rest of the season are a more realistic. He was not getting sacks the season prior, and then was injured for the rest of the season.

AZ should have kept Reddick and then let C Jones walk in 2022, earning them a nice comp pick. Now they will still likely let him walk, but will be forced to use a high draft pick on an uncertain OLB rookie.

  9. He’s famous for fading during a season, in a game and vs elite competition.

BB fleeced the Cardinals and won 2 more rings with Joe Thuney instead.

    lol

Why has BB nor won a postseason game since Brady bolted?

  11. Touchback thinks Joe Thuney is a hall of famer…

That’s about all you need to know about that ..

Is this a serious question? The Executive of the Year was relegated to using Newton during a pandemic with no camp and then his rookie qb was just runner up rookie of the year going to the playoffs.

There is no way you are an adult like you claim. You believe in Santy Claus and the Tooth Fairy thinking that way. Mortifyng if you are an adult. Absolutely mortifying.

The better question is, why did Brady not like his #1D in 2019 and sabotage the season while spitting on the fans in the process?

How is Brady’s buddy doing in GB mirroring Brady’s postseason disappearing acts?
