As to gambling infractions, Calvin Ridley could be the tip of the NFL’s iceberg

The final section of Playmakers, out in eight days, focuses on the challenges the NFL faces in the immediate future. Most of those challenges come from gambling.

The news that Falcons receiver Calvin Ridley has been suspended for a full year, minimum, for betting on NFL games is the tip of a gigantic iceberg into which the RMS NFL may be inevitably careening.

Gambling is now saturating the game, with the league having SEVEN (a fitting number, I suppose) gambling sponsorships. Gambling ads are everything. It’s accepted. It’s normal. It’s permitted. For everyone except those who are connected to the game, that is.

In the days of illegal gambling, players had to have a bookie, or a connection to one. It took work, effort. They knew they were crossing a line. They knew they possibly would get caught.

Today, all you need is a phone. That’s what Ridley reportedly did. He downloaded the app, and he placed bets.

Are we sufficiently naive to think he’s the only one? He’s simply the first one to be caught.

And for every player foolish enough to bet on his own phone in his own name, there will be others who work through a straw man, a friend or a family member who places the action and funnels the winnings (if there are any) to the player. It will take much more work to catch them.

Already, we’re hearing scattered rumors about other high-profile players who may be gambling on games, too. It definitely becomes a key part of the homework that teams must do when considering the acquisition of a given player, via free agency, trade, or draft.

Players, coaches, and other team and league employees engaging in the very activity that the league is selling to millions of fans — gambling on games — is just part of the problem. Legalized gambling brings many other potential concerns. In Playmakers, I tried to identify as many of them as possible, based on conversations with people in position to be thinking about these issues and potentially solving them.

The stakes are very high for the NFL. If the league fails, Congress inevitably will establish a federal agency that regulates the NFL. While that may be the last thing the NFL wants, it may also be exactly what the NFL needs.

  1. Betting on your phone makes it incredibly difficult or incredibly easy to get caught depending on how smart you are. My bet is most of these guys will get caught.

  2. The NFL promotes and worries about gambling at the same time. Catch 22 much?

  3. You see that second half of the AFC Championship Game when the Chiefs forgot how to play football? Here we go….

  4. Apparently the entire Patriot defense had bet on the Bills in the playoff game….

  5. how do you amass a small fortune ? start with a big fortune and bet on FOOTBALL..

  6. If the NBA had the same rules, Rodman, Barkley and Jordan would been suspended for 3 lifetimes.

  7. The LAST thing we need is for the NFL to be controlled by the Feds. Did I miss something? Where is this coming from?

  8. Why not investigate the super bowl referees? Some interesting things happened in the last two minutes.

  9. NFL has been rigged for decades. Any of you who believe the NFL is actually still a legitimate sporting competition is no different than believing in Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny.

  10. Kansas City didn’t make adjustments and their arrogance was ultimately their undoing.

  11. Here is the problem, Mike, gambling has always been around. Just because the league made it legal doesn’t mean players haven’t been gambling this whole time. After all, you have an injury report, and people openly talked about the spread.

  12. If only this happened to Kraft or someone he employed; it would be washed away and the evidence destroyed.

Jordan had a gambling problem. There’s not the slightest evidence that he bet on NBA games.

  14. You can’t bet with sports apps or online at all in California. Not legally, anyway. Can’t play online poker either.

  15. As a Colts season ticket holder, when I walk into Lucas Oil Stadium on gameday and see a mini-Caesar’s Sportsbook, inside the stadium, open for business, on gameday, I know this is a bad marriage. And I’m a bettor.

  16. Well with all the schooling in college these guys get there is no way there is not more

  17. Just look at these last 2 SBs with the creepy calls on defenses where there was no penalties.

  18. I’m sure they have a plan in place. They’ll probably start giving players and coaches immunity if they come forward.

  19. The NFL crossed a very risky line in so many respects. But, the league and owners got richer so who cares about integrity of the game?

  20. All of a sudden Patrick Mahomes running around holding the ball while his WRs ran wide open makes sense.

BB must have had a bet against the Pats in the SB against the Eagles where he refused to put Malcom Butler in the game

  22. What about things like fantasy football? Aren’t there players who participate? What if players not on the Super Bowl teams make a bet? Heck what if someone reports a bet by a key player in a game, whether it’s true or not? I could see a fan of a KC opponent claiming Mahomes made a bet on another game. Would the league start an investigation based just on that claim?

  23. This also explains why the Colts laid down vs the jaguars, of course I said this when it happened that it was due to everyone betting on the Colts that game.

  24. Of course, this gets Atlanta out of having to pay for a player thats proven unreliable. So maybe the inconsistency in punishments is because in this case an owner had an ask in for Rodger to do him a solid.

  25. Pete Rozelle, the iconic commisioner of the NFL, worked hard to keep gambling out of the NFL. Roger Goodell will be remembered as the one who allowed gambling into the NFL in exchange for a cut of the action.

Nah, the Bills were just the better team and beat us fair and square. We respect that.

Apparently you missed the Higgins facemask aka one of the most obvious blown calls of all time. Don’t act like the Rams got away with one.

  28. Don’t worry the NFL investigated itself and found that he didn’t use any insider information.

  29. Players are allowed to bet on anything other than the NFL. Just do that if they must. Still don’t understand what the thrill is because losing is guaranteed. Particularly the more they do it. They already bet on themselves and made the NFL. Just do what the contract dictates and keep the money rolling.

  30. NFL games rigged over money? Superbowl 47, those lights going out was no accident!

  31. hey NFL, If you lay down with a snake, don’t act shocked when you get bitten!

  32. The NFL only has the NFL to blame for this and what is going to turn into a real nightmare! The NFL forced the Rooney Family to sell off their gambling interests only to turn around and legalize football betting with Gambling Sites becoming NFL Partners! I think it’s funny the players can eat, drink or buy anything that is sold as advertisement during NFL games but they can’t bet!
