Bears working to finalize trade of Khalil Mack to Chargers

The AFC West’s pool of quarterbacks is getting even deeper with Russell Wilson headed for Denver and there may be another big-time pass rusher coming to the division.

According to multiple reports, the Bears and Chargers are working to finalize a trade that would send Khalil Mack from Chicago to Los Angeles. The compensation is expected to be a 2022 second-round pick and a 2023 sixth-round pick.

That’s a lot less than the package Bears gave up to get Mack from the Raiders before the 2018 season. They sent two first-rounders to the AFC West club in that exchange and signed him to a six-year extension that calls for Mack to make $17,550,000 in salary and bonuses while counting $30.15 million against the cap this season.

Those moves were made when Ryan Pace was the team’s General Manager. Ryan Poles is now in the job and this move signals a big change of direction for the Bears.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media adds there’s some tinkering with his contract that needs to go on before everyone agrees to the deal. As of now, the Bears would clear just over $6 million in cap space with the trade, but that number could change with a tweak to the deal.

Assuming that takes place, Mack, who played for Chargers coach Brandon Staley when he first got to Chicago, would join Joey Bosa in an imposing pass rushing duo for the 2022 Chargers.

  1. What a waste of a hall of fame player in his prime. The Chicago Bears wasted the best years of his career.

  2. The end of the bears defense being dominant, bye hicks, goldman, jackson, mack. They will score 10 pts a game and now give up 30.

  3. Another validation that Gruden and the Raiders were right to not pay him and instead trade him. He’s good, but not worth the money he wanted/signed.

  4. Mack deserves to go to a team that can compete and Bears need picks and money. Seems like a good deal all around.

  5. 4 nfl seasons is a HUGE amount of wear and tear. Its not a surprise that the Bears are getting a lot less in return than what they gave up back then.

  6. The Bears best player on defense (in the recent years) has always been Akiem Hicks. Mack is overrated.

  7. The AFC West is going fun this year. Three star QBs along with Carr who is good and sometimes great, lots of offensive and defensive talent. Now if only Von Miller heads back to Denver…

  8. Last few seasons Mack started piling up the nagging injuries. He couldn’t stay on the field enough to justify the massive contract. Ryan Poles did the right thing in moving on from a 31 year old declining player and the accompanying salary cap hit. In 4 years with the Bears, Mack never enjoyed real team success, so I hope he can find that ring with Chargers.

  9. The Bears got 2 playoff appearances and one amazing season in 2018 out of Mack. With the pick they got from the Raiders in the Mack they drafted David Montgomery. Mack can’t stay healthy and now with the picks/cap relief they can build around Fields. It was a good trade to get Mack and a good trade to sell high on him today.

  10. The bears are determined to jettison all talent. The chargers are going to have a pretty formidable D-line that could stack up against The Chiefs and Mahomes.

  11. I said it when Chicago made that trade with the Raiders. His cap number will handcuff the Bears,… not too mention they gave away the farm in picks to get him. Plus they take a dead cap hit for $24 mil.
    The GM and HC were desperate to save their jobs. And it didn’t work.

    It’s somewhat refreshing to say that about a Chicago Bear who’s not a quarterback.

  13. Anyone who thinks this is a bad deal hasn’t watched the Bears the past few years. Mack was always hurt and had no help on offense so he was constantly on the field. We overspent on him to begin with. He’s a good player, but we can definitely put the money to better use. No one in Chicago is lamenting this news.

  14. Fire sale. But is almost impossible anymore for a non-QB to pull a 1st round pick, and Mack is literally the only player on the Bears roster worth anything in trade so if draft capital is priority one for the new regime it’s a move they have to make.

  15. 31 year old declining player
    —-

    Everybody on the Bears is a perpetually declining player. A little LA sun vitamin D, a real QB and Mr. Mack will be back in prime playing form in no time.

    Bears having buyers remorse

    ————————–

    This may have applied 3 years ago.

  17. The Bears are like the Jets. Free Agents go there for the big pay day then slowly fade away. Mack is irrelevant, I wouldn’t give up anything more than a 5th rounder for him and make the Bears pay half his remaining salary.

  18. it would now be safe to say that the Bears came up short on both of the K Mack trades.

  19. Mack was great when he first got to Chicago He was great but injuries have caught up to him. Let him go to a new home and restart his career. Chicago needs young draft pics so. I like it.

  20. That.. is a lot more than I thought my Bears could get for Mack.

    Do the Chargers realize how injured he’s been for the Bears the last few years? He’s awesome when healthy, but that’s been rare lately.

  21. I’m really hoping getting to the Chargers reenergizes the guy. He was such a beast to watch. Hitting Pro Bowls in two position the same year. I’m not a Chargers guy, but he could be the straw that stirs the drink for sure.

  22. This has just as much to do about Roquan Smith as it does about not wasting the last years of K Mack’s career. The new Bears defense needs to be built around #58 the same way it was built around Urlacher back in the day.

  23. Not sure you can blame this one on the Bears. There were so many games when Mack just disappeared. Yes, he was double teamed most of the time, but if you’re an elite player you find your way out of that. The stats just don’t show Mack provided much for the Beats beyond the first year. I wish that wasn’t so, but it is and that’s why he is being traded. Another draft pick for us! Yeah!

  24. Talk about a waste or money and time. The only reason he looked good at times was he played with two all pro defenders who created chaos for him to make plays. This is a great move, hope they get some picks for him.

  25. As a life long Chicago person the return the bears got for him did not match all the talk that Bears fans were saying that they were going to back. All I hear for past 2 months was that the Bears were going to get a 1st and 2rd and 4th round draft picks for him

  26. To all those saying Mack couldn’t stay on the field, he missed two games total in the first 3 seasons he was with the Bears. Last season was only the second time in his career that he missed a game at all. If healthy he’ll give the Chargers a big time partner for Bosa and for the compensation he’s worth the trade. Oh and this is coming from a Raider fan. This guy is a consummate pro who should never have been traded away from Oakland in the first place.

  27. They wasted Mack’s best years by having Mitchell Trubisky as their QB. With a real QB, they would have had all the other pieces in place. But no, the first rounder they kept, 2nd overall, was him, over Mahomes and Watson.

  28. didn’t most on these boards have him in the HOF and winning Super BowlS 3 years ago? and torched the Raiders for trading him. 3 years…SMH. good luck with that cap hit. Somewhere Gruden has a big smirk on his face.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    As a Packer fan, Khalil Mack has worried me a bit.
    Akiem Hicks straight-up frightens me.
  30. Mr Wilson and the other quarterbacks in the AFC west better be able to run or get rid of the ball fast. Can you imaginehow great the Chargers d line will be if they draft the Georgia defensive tackle now.You can spend money when you quarterback is on his rookie deal.
  31. Good move by the Chargers although I do think he has regressed a bit, more dinged up an all. Bears gave up Two 1st rd picks + gave him that huge contract. Oh what could have been for Nagy and Co, using those 1sts and cap space offensively.
  32. Chargers are busking a dynasty. Herbert is Dan Marino with wheels and brains
  33. Chargers were already one of top 3 teams going into the next year, if mack and boss stay healthy that’s gonna be a scary pass rush.
    ————————————————————————-
    For sure. Kind of the like the Packers with Aaron Rodgers.
  35. Huge laugh @ the Bears office and delusional fans. Way overrated, and WAY overpriced which cost the Bears critical draft picks that would have helped win meaningful games.
    Raiders blew all the picks and bounty they got for Mack, of course.
    But wow, Bears were FLEECED.
  36. He’s on the wrong team for that divisional move. Mack will add zero value in that division on that team. Broncos will be ready, Raiders are no team to sleep on and the Chiefs will own the Chargers. Mahomes will run circles around Mack, l0l.
  37. Mack will never see a double team. He consistently saw them in Chicago. Gotta do this while Herbo is on his rookie deal. And the “he’s been injured” talk is confusing. Aside from last year he had missed only 3 games as a bear.
  38. Bostonian living in Chicago where my wife is from. I’ll go back to the 2015 draft, since we got married then.
    Shall we?!
    2015-Kevin white-injury bush. But the bears had Bennett, Alshon and Marshall
    2016-Leonard Floyd-traded up to get him too
    2017- NO COMMENT
    2018-Roquan smith
    2019-traded for Mack
    2020-traded for Mack
    2021-traded their first AND 2022’s first for fields
    2022- traded for right to draft fields.
    I love my patriots and my wife’s bears, but I refuse to spend a DIME ON THEIR CLOTHES, GAMES, PSL’s, until they get it together.
  39. Chargers are going to wreck the NFL. Staley is a genius. Herbert has the arm of Marino, the legs of Elway, and the Brains of Brady. Going to be fun watching them splatter Derek Carr then laugh afterwards about how he got shook!
  40. Hopefully the move can re-energize Mack.. if he can stay on the field. Might get Joey Bosa to step up in the big moments as well. Been a long time since the Chargers really hit FA hard. Guess they should threaten to fire the GM every year.
    Based on what? Them missing the ayoffs last year? They couldn’t even tie a team playing for the tie. The only people that think the Chargers are going to be great every year besides their 26 fans are the media talking heads… who also place the Cowboys in the Superbowl every year. None of them have been right about either team since most of you were born.
  42. Is it me or is the AFC West becoming must see TV? NFC West a close second…
    Anyone for a Texans vs Panthers bore fest…. AFC/NFC South on life support….
    The NFL is evolving into a QB Contest. Prove me wrong…
  43. Mack is not the player he was when he went to the Bears. And he carries a big price tag. The compensation offered in the deal by Los Angeles is fair.
  44. Paid way too much on the front end and got almost zilch on the back end. Typical Bears personnel move since 1986.
    Bears = Jets West
    =====================
    Excuse me, as a lifelong Bears fan, I need to correct you.
    Bears = Jets Central, thank you.
  47. Been a Bears fan since the last won a SB. I gotta say they really test my loyalty at times. The McCaskey’s have ruined this team for so long it’s difficult to believe in any of the moves they make. They just gave away the most desirable player on the roster for a 2nd and a 6th. What a joke. LA just did to Chicago what the 49ers did to… Chicago a few years ago in the trade that gave the Bears the Trubisky draft pick.
  48. Poles building a great base of mediocrity and will blame Pace until he gets fired. Should be a go nowhere 2022, 2023 and 2024 for the Bears but the spin will be that they are rebuilding while each QB scramble in 2022 will leave us fans holding our breath.
    Unfortunately until the family goes will be more of the same but all the seats will still be sold at Soldier’s Field.
    No doubt. If they can just get the chance to do it as the game of the week, playoffs on the line, win and your in loser stays home.
    Poles? 8-8, 8-8, 6-11 is the absolute benchmark of mediocrity. Poles didn’t build that!
