Which teams are realistic options for Deshaun Watson?

On Friday, much will potentially be learned about the criminal cases pending against Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. Quite possibly, the door finally will swing open for a trade.

As we previously have reported, multiple teams are willing to trade for Watson without the 22 civil cases pending against him resolved. The current impediment continues to be the possibility that Watson will be indicted on one or more felony charges, and then placed on paid leave pending the resolution of the prosecution. (Last season, the Panthers were willing to trade for him despite the criminal investigation, but Watson wouldn’t waive his no-trade clause.)

If the grand jury does not indict Watson on felony charges, he could be traded when the new league year begins next week. So which teams would be interested?

As we previously explained, he could be looking at a suspension even without criminal charges, under the Ben Roethlisberger precedent. Thus, whoever gets Watson may not get him for several weeks of the regular season.

Still, it’s not a one-year move but a 10-year effort with Watson. So which teams should be watched? Here’s our list.

Panthers: They’re desperate to find a franchise quarterback. As mentioned above, they were willing to do the deal last year, with no clarity as to his various legal entanglements. That said, the tenuous status of coach Matt Rhule should give Watson pause, given that he possibly would have a new coach as soon as next year.

Seahawks: In 2017, Watson had a spectacular game in Seattle. He believes he suffered his torn ACL during that performance, with the ligament fully ripping apart at practice four days later. Now, the Seahawks have an obvious need at quarterback. They have the assets to get a deal done, given the Russell Wilson trade. However, does Watson see Seattle as a place where he can contend sooner than later? The team is clearly in rebuilding mode.

Eagles: Linked at times to Watson chatter last year, it never seemed that Watson was interested. Maybe he should be. The Eagles made it to the playoffs in 2021, and in a depleted NFC they could become a significant contender — especially with Watson at quarterback. And they could stick with Jalen Hurts (or Gardner Minshew) during a short-term suspension.

Vikings: If they find a trade partner for Kirk Cousins, Watson is the only available upgrade. However, they’d need a reliable bridge quarterback during a potential suspension. Kellen Mond doesn’t seem to be ready to play.

Buccaneers: Even without Tom Brady, the Bucs can contend at a high level. It makes plenty of sense, and it definitely would close the door on a Brady return. (He’s not coming back to the Buccaneers, anyway.)

Steelers: Although former Bucs quarterback Shaun King continues to push the idea that Watson is interested in the Steelers, the force of the all-caps “ARE NOT” interested report from Wednesday suggests that the source goes as high in the front office as possible.

Cardinals: If the Cards and Kyler Murray are at a contractual impasse, why not swap Murray for Watson? It would make plenty of sense for everyone, if Houston would be ready to pay Kyler big money.

  1. I’m told from a well played source that Watson to Vegas it’s virtually a done deal after he’s cleared of his proclivities. LV will send Carr, Renfrow, a first rounder and 2 rounders to Houston.

  2. The only trade partner for Cousins worth the draft pick would be Carolina and they already were rejected. If they reconsidered or sweetened the pot a little, I could see Teddy back as a bridge to a decent drafted QB.

WHY DIDN’T THEY DRAFT MAC JONES LAST YEAR!?!?! Gah.

  3. As a Vikings fan, I will (mis)quote Queen, from “Bohemian Rhapsody”: “No, no, no, no, no, no, NO! Mama mia, mama mia, mama mia, let it go!”

  4. With the uncertainty of what is going to happen on Friday, I get the feeling Watson is going to regret not taking the Panthers job when it was available.

  5. When a person shows who they are you had better believe them. Whoever is dumb enough to mortgage the farm for him will be sorry down the road.

Watson being picky about where he’s traded shows how delusional he is

    __________

He may be a little delusional but what it really shows is he knows how good he is. There are some teams with QB needs that wouldn’t take him but there are plenty of teams that would take him if they could.

  7. I’d have said the buccaneers could not afford him, until I saw the Packers give Rogers $40 million a year

Really? How good is he exactly? He’s going to be in a “prove it” type of situation if you ask me… He hasn’t won anything in the NFL. Davis Mills just won as many games as DW with the same team.

  9. Lions, Eagles, Jets and Seahawks. They have the picks to make it happen, especially Philly.

  10. It’s incredibly easy to obtain indictments as there is no real opposition, so I’d be pretty surprised if there isn’t an indictment which drags this out even further. Then again, this is in Texas. . . . .

    *********

    *mic drop*

  12. Most NFL fans are delusional apparently. A 27 year old franchise QB available. Half the league will be all over that once these weak charges get dropped on Friday. Some teams not on this list will emerge suddenly like the Patriots and Saints if they can make the money work. Book it.

  13. Texans should just keep him. He is a Top 8 QB and the league obviously wants the whole mess to go away.

  14. The Bucs fan base revolted when they drafted Jameis Winston due to concerns about his character, one can only imagine how Deshaun Watson would be received with even deeper character concerns.

  15. What would the Texans do if Watson refuses to waive his no trade clause for any of the teams willing to trade for him? They paid him last year not to play. They can’t do that this year with the salary he’s owed. Would they cut him? Ultimately, that’s the best case scenario for Watson.

  16. More than a year off. A new system. This will be interesting to see how he can perform. Seattle seems like a good fit.

    Colts?

Colts don’t have a first round pick this year. Pretty much kills that idea…

  18. That’s an interesting point about Watson getting injured in Seattle. I could see that be a factor in not wanting to go there.

  19. AT THE RIGHT PRICE teams would be interested but the Texans want an arm and two legs for him plus he’s on a big contract. Throw in his legal problems and associated baggage, not playing for a couple years, playoff struggles and he’s not looking like a bargain. Texans always had a lot of talent around him; no certainty he’ll look as good on a less loaded squad.

  20. Considering what Ben was charged with previously, Watson should be a perfect fit in Pittsburgh!!!

    Patriots have Mac Jones.

    Mark you down as wrong.

  22. the Texans won’t trade him to the Colts because the Texans play the Colts twice a season.

  23. I would like Watson as a Steeler but seeing what the Broncos gave up for a 34 yr old WAY on the downside it probably is not doable.

  24. So last year he refused to play, less than a year after signing a massive contract because his feelings were hurt. Then he turns down a trade to a team that amazingly still wanted him. Now if he’s charged he’ll get another paid vacation while it plays out. If he isn’t charged he still gets to pick his new team or what, just get paid to watch again

  25. Texans should just keep him. He is a Top 8 QB and the league obviously wants the whole mess to go away.

    Watson, Top 8??????
    1. Brady, NO
    2. Mahomes, NO
    3. Rodgers, NO
    4. Allen, NO
    5. Wilson, NO
    6. Burrow, NO
    7. Herbert, NO
    8. Stafford, NO

    Negative

  26. Watson already vetoed a trade to the Panthers, which seems crazy to me, but maybe he doesn’t like Rhule or knows Rhule may not be around for long…

How good is he? One of the best qb’s in the league. Let’s just say he’s innocent, then is he being delusional being picky when he knows he’s one of the best qb’s out there? If he’s found innocent and they find out he was set up by some random people that just want money, then how has he done anything wrong, and what does he need to prove? He’s an elite qb. Now this is all based on him being innocent, but if he is, he has the right to go wherever he wants, and nearly every team would get an upgrade with him. And yes Patriots fans, as I’ve seen y’all chime in, the Patriots absolutely would take him over Mac Jones, he’s not the one spoken of in prophecy here, he’s just a decent qb. 22 td’s to 13 int’s, and played poorly in the playoffs. Anybody but Mahommes or Rogers is secretly fearing for their job right now.

  28. If Cardinals and Texans execute a QB swap, maybe Deshaun can recommend a masseuse to help Shorty when he has sore muscles….

  29. I sure hope my Eagles don’t trade for him .They need all 3 first round draft picks plus all of their cap space to rebild the roster. If they trade for him they’d have the same crappy defense and only one good wide receiver. The Eagles already have their franchise quarterback in Jalen Hurts. They just need to develop him and give him more weapons like the Bills did with Allen.
