Bruce Arians apparently has had his eye on Baker Mayfield for a while

Cleveland Browns v Tampa Bay Buccaneers
USA TODAY Sports

If you’re surprised by the news that the Buccaneers have evaluated Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, don’t be.

As noted by the folks at JoeBucsFan.com, Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians said in 2018 that he’d only come out of retirement to coach the Browns. The remark, which Arians would later contradict by accepting the job in Tampa, likely had plenty to do with the presence of Mayfield, who at the time was a rookie and was playing very well.

Now that the Browns may be thinking about moving on from Mayfield, or at least the Bucs are preparing for that possibility, Arians could finally get a chance to coach the former No. 1 overall pick.

If the Browns make a change, it shouldn’t be a surprise. Through four seasons, he has yet to fully realize his potential. Last year, he suffered a shoulder injury in Week Two — as a direct result of his own decision to try to make a tackle after throwing an interception.

  1. It was a good decision because he is paid to try to tackle the interceptor.
It was a bad decision to keep playing if the injury was too serious.

  2. It would be funny to see Tampa trade for Mayfield, and for him to be mediocre, with a fat contract.

The browns would be happy with that – getting picks and drafting a QB.

  3. I think it would be great for all involved if the Browns could move on from him, and he could get with Arians to complete the puzzle. TB would end up with a solid QB for years to come, if they can keep his head on straight.

  4. QBs shouldn’t try tackling LBs. Saw Brady do that once after an INT. Patriot Nation was holding their breath. Gave both QBs props for being so competitive but hoped they wouldn’t be too competitive in the future.

  5. I always forget about all the smokescreens that come out this time of year in the NFL…..not saying this is untrue, but the smokescreens are real people.

  6. He made the tackle (Mayfield) and wouldnt have had to if the receiver would have had the proper depth on the route and not alligator armed the throw.

  7. Run Baker Run,…… as fast as you can away from Cleveland.
The fans there are impatient. 30 years of losing and they get a brief whiff of success,… and now they think they’re Super Bowl material.
HaHaHa,… I think Mayfield would be spectacular in Tampa. And Cleveland will continue to sputter.

  8. I get the Browns rolling with Baker for 1 more year, but I can’t imagine any other team giving up anything to take a flyer on him this year. He’ll be available for back-up money next off-season.

  9. If the Browns make a change, it shouldn’t be a surprise.

Of course it would not be a surprise! It would be the Browns being the Browns! Again!

  10. Mayfield did those commercials before he played well; gotta strike while the iron is hot, because it’s cooling fast.

  11. Yeah, just like when you ran your mouth thinking you could groom Jameis Winston. Hilarious.

Is there a bigger fraud in sports than Bruce Arians?

  12. Bruce went to Tampa to fix Jameis Winston, another former number one overall pick. We saw how that worked out. But also, look at the money Bruce has made since he accepted the Tampa Bay job. Forget the minor details. I mean, if he can get Baker down there and give it another year or two, that’s about another $25 million in his bank account, even if he doesn’t win one single game. So many coaches are stealing money nowadays, and the owners have very little clue about anything football related. Bruce probably figures why not me?

That’s nothing. . . Mac leaves DB’s on the ground crying!

  14. I’m thinking Houston is going to want Mayfield as part of the package when they unload Deshaun Watson. But if there’s a 3 way trade between Houston, Cleveland, and Tampa, I’d be curious about what that will look like.

  15. I’m quite impressed how you were able to troll Brady to unretire just by publishing this article. Bravo!

  16. I love how the narrative is that Mayfield has been awful. Two seasons ago he took the Browns to the second round of the playoffs, but it’s as though it never happened. Last season was lost due to injuries – the team should’ve shut him down right away, but I think they wanted him to “prove it” before giving him a new contract.

It all made no sense, he played poorly due to his injuries and they still went 8-9. Have we already forgotten 1-31 with Hugh?

I’m not saying Mayfield doesn’t need to play better – of course he does – but why not deal with the reality of his injuries, not to mention that the cancer of OBJ had a negative impact on the team.
