Tom Brady adds even more fuel to his unretirement mystery

On February 1, Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady retired. As more and more time goes by, it’s becoming more and more clear that he quite possibly has retired only from the Buccaneers.

Brady started all of it. Six days after retiring (or whatever that was), Brady said —  on his own podcast — “you never say never” and “I don’t know how I’ll feel six months from now.” He has addressed the situation on multiple occasions since then, most recently adding more ambiguity and something other than finality when speaking to Fred Couples.

Along the way, I’ve developed a theory that Brady still wants to play for the 49ers, the team that didn’t want him two years ago. He grew up in the area. He attended The Catch game. He grew up rooting for the San Francisco dynasty, a connection that ignited his passion for football and laid the foundation for his unprecedented run of success in the NFL. For a guy who has nothing else to accomplish, winning a Super Bowl with his boyhood favorite team would be the dash of whipped cream atop the cherry atop the icing atop the cake.

Then came Saturday. We posted something last last night/early this morning about Brady attending a Manchester United soccer match. The significance to his football career comes from the fact that the Glazer family owns both Manchester United and the Buccaneers, and that the Glazers ultimately will decide whether Brady will be permitted to leave the Buccaneers despite being under contract for one more year, and under what terms. Some (particularly Buccaneers fans who don’t want to see him playing for any other team) scoffed.

Then came Sunday.

On Twitter, Brady posted four photos from the Saturday excursion and thanked the Glazers for hosting Brady and his two sons. Taken in isolation, it doesn’t mean he eventually may be thanking them for his football freedom.

On Instagram, it’s a different story. Literally. His Instagram story — a reel of photos and videos posted by the user of the account — contains images from the day at Old Trafford. Near the end, there’s a video of Brady and Cristiano Ronaldo interacting on the pitch after the match. Brady’s son, Benny, gets Ronaldo’s jersey. Then, Brady gets a very mild third degree from Ronaldo.

“All good?” Ronaldo says. “You’re finished, right?

Brady’s reaction is telling. What he says can’t be heard. How he says it can’t be ignored.

It wasn’t a clear yes. It wasn’t a vague yes. It wasn’t a yes at all. He had a chance to say, “Yeah, I done” and he didn’t.

Then, he selected that specific interaction to be posted on an Instagram account that has 11.5 million followers.

Is he finished? The ultimate question, I continue to believe, is whether Brady gets to begin again with another team. And the one team he undoubtedly has in mind is the team that is Super Bowl ready, especially if it were to add Tom Brady.

  1. The last place the buccaneers would let Brady go is in their own conference come on give me a break.

  2. Brady has retired from football, and now he’s a businessman. Just like the Manning brothers, he’s going to do whatever necessary to keep his name in the paper.

  3. Rodgers does something like this you rip on him for days. Brady does it and as Rodgers said you treat him like “it’s a beautiful mystery”

  4. The more you post this stuff, the more I’m thinking you are trying to will it to happen Florio, just so your not wrong.

  5. It’s going to be so good seeing the 49ers not win a super bowl with Brady. It will add to their frustration with Shanahan and it will haunt Brady for the rest of his life. Personally can’t wAit. Shanahan blows it by going with Jimmy Glass, he trades all this picks for a stiff who can’t hit the side of a barn, now he is going to not win the super bowl with Brady. It can’t get any better

  6. You can’t really make comparisons between Brady & Rodgers. Two different cats.

  7. Poor little Brady couldn’t stand all of the attention Rodgers was getting, you knew this was coming. Is there a bigger narcissist on the planet? Never seen a grown man crave attention as much as Brady does. It truly is pathetic

  8. Take a break Mike, it’s the off-season. We’re not expecting news 24/7. I’m with you, until he stays retired for a full year it would not surprise me at all if he came back but I don’t think we need to hear it every day. These guys always have a hard time walking away, especially somebody as good as Brady. Just because he showed up at a soccer game and didn’t say he’s definitely still retired doesn’t mean it needs to be reported. He said he’s retired, let’s take him at his word until/unless he says he’s not. Let us know if that happens.

  9. There’s no such thing as a sure thing in the NFL, but seeing how close the 49ers have gotten to reaching and/or winning Super Bowls the last few years, it’s hard to believe they wouldn’t win one if they had Brady on the roster.

I’m guessing the Bucs would love to be the last team Brady played for, but at the same time, he’s given them an all-time gift – membership in the at-least-two-SB-trophies club – and there’s almost no price too great in gratitude for that.

  10. From a purely sentimental point of view I am rooting for this to happen. Whatever the outcome it would show that however big a person we become we still have that little boy inside that wants to play for the team that we grew up rooting for. Coming full circle, that’s what this would be about.

  11. Per NFL rules : when an NFL player retires, the contract is tolled, so if, for example, a player retires with 2 years remaining on his contract, and is placed on the Reserve/Retired List, then, if he chooses to “unretire”, the player’s rights are still held by the team to the extent of the remaining 2 years of the contract.

If Brady wants to play for the 49ers, and the Bucs refuse to trade him to them.. it won’t be until after his contract has tolled with the Buccaneers.

  12. Brady has a really hard time being a man and saying what needs to be said.

  13. So the jist of this story is Brady wants to play for the 49er’s. So he is trying to ask for or force a trade from Tampa to Sanfran by saying/threatening to retire. So I’m supposed to believe Brady told the Glazier’s give me this trade or I won’t play in Tampa. Well whoop de doo
in either scenario he won’t play in Tampa. One scenario he plays for the 49’ers and possibly against Tampa. The other Brady stays retired amd doesn’t play for Tampa or anywhere. So there is zero leverage here for Brady. The I get my way or I take my ball and go home approach isn’t going to work in this situation. The only way this trade happens is if Sanfran works out a trade deal with Tampa. No idea what Tampa would want in return for that kind of trade. I hope the Glazier’s see that Brady is actively trying to lower his own trade value so Sanfran gets the best deal. That alone should leave a bad taste in Glazier’s mouth.

  14. At this stage in his life, if Tom Brady chooses to be an NFL QB over being with his family is a pretty selfish thing to do. Eventually he’s going to have to let go.

If Giselle gives him a (justifiable) ultimatum, and he chooses the NFL over his family, it’s addiction and a very sad story.

There was only a year left on Brady’s contract because he did the Bucs a solid and extended his contract to free up some immediate salary cap space. Zero leverage for Brady? All he would have to do is wait until the Bucs find a QB and spend some cash and then tell the Bucs he’s going to I retire. Fit that under the cap!

  16. Florio may finally have a point about this. If you look at the video, it’s pretty clear he’s not sure if he’s done. Well done Florio.

  17. If Brady sits this year, does Tampa Bay lose his rights? And he can go wherever he wants next year? Or do the Bucs have his rights for that one year whenever it happens?

  18. Guy went to a soccer game overseas with his kids and that makes him a narcissist and egomaniac according to some. He should stop being so selfish and stay hidden at home like all retired old people do.

  19. Well one things for sure – he won’t be going to the Patriots. They’re terrible. Did you see their last game? Hahaha

He went to a soccer game nothing more nothing less. The End

    Well that aged poorly…

  21. He is starting to really aggravate me.
    What an attention seeking diva.
In hindsight , he is starting to make Favre’s antics more acceptable.
He can’t compete, himself , at the absolute top level ,unless surrounded by the absolute top tier level of talent.
Those who think that he had anything to do with an amazing comeback against the eventual SB winners ,need to have a look at that game again. He was one of the major reasons that the Buc’s lost it !.
Any top10 QB would be favourite to get to an NFC championship game / SB on the 49ers squad. So p**sed off with him , that I hope he doesn’t get the chance.

    Brady wins Super Bowls.

  23. Now that Brady is back with Tampa Bay is it too crazy to think that a trade could be worked out with San Francisco? Could a Brady for Jimmy G (plus, I don’t know, insert player name or draft pick here) happen? Is it better for Tampa Bay to allow Brady to retire, get nothing, and then still need to find a QB or trade him and actually get a QB?
