Deshaun Watson reportedly will meet with Browns on Tuesday

Baker Mayfield could be getting upset.

The Cleveland Browns have sufficient interest in Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson to take a meeting with him. Per multiple reports, the Browns will sit down with Watson on Tuesday in Houston.

Tuesday will be a busy day for Watson, given that he’s scheduled to be grilled by lawyer Tony Buzbee in the civil actions pending against Watson. Word of the first lawsuit to be filed against Watson emerged 52 weeks ago today.

Despite the looming deposition, Watson met with the Saints and Panthers on Monday, also in Houston. Some would say his full focus should be devoted to preparing for his deposition. It will be an experience unlike any he had endured. And if it goes poorly, the teams currently interested in him may have second thoughts.

As explained on Monday, at least one potentially interested team realizes the potential significance of Tuesday’s testimony. All of them should, frankly. All should want to see the video and read the transcript of the many in which Watson faces what could be withering questioning from Buzbee.

Some folks with the Browns could be in line for some tough questions, too. Mayfield is the current starter, under contract through 2022 and recovering from surgery to his non-throwing shoulder. He has a fully-guaranteed salary of $18.8 million for 2022. If the Browns will be absorbing Watson’s $35 million salary, they presumably would want to unload Mayfield’s salary.

Potential destinations at this point would include, in theory, the Colts — and perhaps the other teams that met with Watson on Monday, the Saints and Panthers. Seattle also could be an option.

By trading Watson, the Texans would clear more than $24 million in 2022 cap space.

  1. Huge mistake by the Browns. But if they want to get rid of him, Indy would be a great spot.

  2. the guy is a tool. being that said im also a Browns fan..what ever it cost PAY IT and bring him to Cleveland..

  3. This whole thing is just a s@#$ show! He cant show any remorse he cant act like what he did was wrong because then he looks guilty. Out of all the teams cleveland makes sense for this move. Bakers from texas he might thrive on the texans who knows..on the other hand can the texans please not ask so much in this trade to make things go more smoothly. #1 watson isnt going to play for u again regardless #2 the team that trades for watson will inherit his future suspension..like come on dont make a team give up there entire future over this

  5. Watson would have a brilliant situation in Cleveland. Far superior to Carolina or New Orleans right now. Also a colossal upgrade over Baker Mayfield.

  6. The texans need to lower there asking price on a trade. 3 1st round picks plus 2nd round picks and players is absolutely unacceptable when the team that gets watson also inherits his suspension that he gets (whatever that may be) if the texans dont budge on what they are asking I hope they get nothing

  7. I don’t want this guy anywhere near Cleveland. Too much baggage and not worth the headache. Who is going to start when the league suspends him?

  8. Unless the deposition is filed as official evidence for a case, it won’t be made available to the public. Most depositions aren’t used for evidence at trial, but rather to settle out of court. So they will not have any affect on the trade. That would not be available until after the trial, if they are used in it. So the ideal of the teams reading them or viewing the videos before making a decision is impossible…and false… it’s a way of implying that Watson has something to hide and to cause bias in opinions of the public…

  9. Teams do not care about civil cases. They just do not. The legal situation is resolved and now it is just up to the NFL to decide what they will do. With no legal issues he will not get more than 6 games suspension of which on appeal they will drop it to 3 and he will be playing next year.

  10. I wonder what changed. I thought he had rejected the Browns and wouldn’t meet with them.

  11. Cleveland continues to consider puzzling moves. We have met the enemy and it is us.

  12. So he’s refusing to go to Seattle, but he’s meeting with the Browns?

    Interesting…

  13. Here’s what’s gonna happen here…Browns wind up getting shunned by Watson, but Baker is so sufficiently pissed off that he also shuns them. His “recovery” from surgery takes much longer than anticipated and there’s all kinds of passive aggressive drama from Baker this year and the Browns are back to searching for a QB after this year.

  14. The pressure is on the Browns to improve QB especially after the Steelers signed Trubisky.Without a QB upgrade the Browns are at best a pesky nuisance sort of like their current QB.

  15. He isn’t going to the Browns. It’s just part of the process. Most likely ends up on a warm climate or dome team.

  16. Why? Dude hasnt played in a year, he could be an upgrade over mayfield, but why bet the farm on an unproven commodity? Dude is going to be the next Wentz, play one good season, and parlay that into massive contract after massive contract.

  17. They already denied the Colts request – the first good thing they’ve done. You don’t trade a franchise QB to a division team, period.

  18. come on Andrew Berry Browns GM do the right thing please losing Odell and Landry will last a while getting Watson and building a team around him will get you out the dawg house with the fan base

  19. probably in the minority but I want the Browns to keep Baker. He played well enough though the garbage of coaching he has been given during his time in Cleveland. he played well enough when he wasn’t injured. yes could he improve but i’d rather take that then give up the haul needed for Watson (heard browns offered multiple 1st, Kareem Hunt, Newsome and Baker for Watson – Texans declined and requested Ward).

just let Baker heal up and let him take the browns to the playoffs.

  20. Mortgage the future for a downgrade at quarterback!!

Such a Browns thing to do I love It!!

  21. I’m not sure why you move from Baker Mayfield. He’s very serviceable and knows the system while Watson doesn’t. Watson also brings legal unknowns and a combination platter of baggage that most fans don’t want. Unfortunately, a team would sign the devil if they thought the player increased their chances of winning.

  22. Could Baker be making new commercials from NRG Field next yr? Can’t wait to see the scowl on his face, if they make a move for Watson.

I agree, and here’s the thing – if the Browns trade the farm for Watson then fans will expect a HUGE team progression, which will be hampered by the amount they need to give up for him. It simply couldn’t be anything other than dominating the division and going deep in the playoffs with him. That’s a big ask, and highly unlikely, partly because it’s a tough division.

It’s too expensive and too much of a risk, but our idiot owner may want to make it happen.

  24. I would be surprised if Baker wasn’t aware of their plans as they even stated during the combine media appearance that a veteran coming in to compete with Baker is a strong possibility (so it’s not like he’s been blindsided) even if it’s not Watson.

Baker knows he’s been up and down and his entire career and going back to college has been competing for spots so this might be Clevelands way of motivating him the best way they believe would work since the last time Baker had an above average season is when they had Hugh Jackson who didn’t suck up to him and Baker in turn played with a chip on his shoulder to prove HUgh wrong.

Baker might just be the kind of guy who can only play well if he’s worried about losing his spot (which would explain why he usually follows 1 touchdown games with a 4 touchdown game the next week). Either way it’s a win/win for Cleveland because as everyone and their mother knows, Indianapolis is desperate for a QB at this point and Tampa would probably offer something for him as well having him learn under Brady for a year so they either get the Baker they paid for or a lot in a trade while not having to worry about who their next QB is.

  25. Watson instantly makes the Browns the favorites in the AFC! He’s going to be the new Lebron and being a championship to Cleveland.

  26. What a fall from grace for the former #1 overall draft pick. After only 4 years, Browns are ready to move on from Baker.

    Interesting…

We have a better overall team. Best running back duo, 2 good tight ends, Amari Cooper, a solid o-line, and Myles is anchoring a pretty solid defense. We can likely get a better deal than the other interested teams, as Baker is still a decent qb to get in return, and there are multiple other players like Hunt or Hooper we could throw in. We are a QB away from serious Super Bowl contenders, it’s the perfect option for him.

  28. Maybe we shoulda dumped Baker months ago and kept OBJ? That was the obvious thing to do cuz Baker is insanely inaccurate and also everyone who is a ‘friend’ of Baker eventually turns into an enemy…OBJ, Hollywood Higgins, Landry, Stefanski, etc. – he can’t get along with ANYONE and he can’t snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, especially when it really needs to happen.People always say get rid of the diva type players, like OBJ etc. but NOBODY on the Browns has been a bigger diva than crybaby Mayfield and all these people want him to stay…smh. Aaron Rodgers is a dive but he can back it up. Baker is a diva who always needs to ‘watch the tape’ blah blah blah – good riddance. For the record, I wanted Trubisky not Watson but we see who snatched him up…it never ends.
