Bills not happy with Commanders over J.D. McKissic deal

On Tuesday, free agent running back J.D. McKissic agreed to a a two-year, $7 million deal with the Bills. Twenty-four hours later, McKissic reversed course and signed the same contract to remain in Washington.

Bills General Manager Brandon Beane expressed his frustration with the Commanders.

That was tough,” Beane said, via video from Ben Standig of TheAthletic.com. “Obviously, he was a guy we targeted. In this business, in general, when you have an agreement, it’s good. But until there’s ink on the paper. . . . His agent did a great job. There were some things that went down with the other organization, which is painful. They chose to do what they did, and I couldn’t stop them.”

Beane spent six seasons in the front office of the Panthers when Washington coach Ron Rivera was the head coach in Carolina, and Beane overlapped one year in Carolina with Commanders executive vice president of player personnel Marty Hurney.

The Commanders didn’t offer McKissic a contract until he agreed to join the Bills. When McKissic learned Washington was willing to match Buffalo’s offer, he decided to stay.

“Once you have an agreement, the agent is supposed to say, ‘It’s over,'” Beane said, “and this agent did that. This agent told the other club, ‘It’s over.’ But the other club didn’t back off.”

In the past two seasons in Washington, McKissic had 256 touches for 1,563 yards and seven touchdowns.

  1. LOL!

Beane hasn’t been able to draft well so he’s relegated to desperately writing checks left and right in a super pricey high bid market, like an idiot. Hilarious watching cap hell sink its teeth into these arrogant franchise who behave like there is no cap and this is some fantasy football league.

Almost every starter they have no is an import.

The pressure is REALLY on now for Buffalo.

  2. Beane is one of the most respected GM’s in the league, and to say he doesn’t draft well is beyond laughable…it’s ludicrous.

  4. It’s funny that he’s salty about the fact that during the legal tampering period, a team kept pursuing their own player when no deal even can be signed by the Bills with another team’s player yet. As corrupt and incompetent as Washington is, all they did here was when Mckissic got his offer, Washington matched it if he wanted to change his mind. That’s something lots of teams do. They didnt one up the Bills, they just matched it and Mckissic decided to change his mind. That’s on the player changing his mind when at a point before contracts could even be signed, not Washington.

  7. Why is he whining? That’s why it’s called a tampering period. Most players want to find out their value and give teams a chance to counter. And that’s what Washington did. If an agreement was reached before a counter offer that’s on the agent. Maybe wait until the pen is to the pad before you make an announcement someone is on your team

I got to ask since I’ve lost count. How many of the NFL teams have you said we’re in cap hell?

  10. grow up Brandon, me matched your offer and he wanted to stay at the “other organization” happens all the time bud

  11. Happy for JD McKissic. I always liked his work ethic when he was with the Seahawks. Frankly, I wish we had him back…

  13. Patriots fans:

Commenting about the Bills spending in an expensive market after what BB did last year, resulting in big hits like Jonnu and Agholor, which has left them in financial dire straights, sounds sad. Good luck with that OL this year. Then to criticize Buffalo’s draft prowess, while not admitting King Belichick’s recent draft history has been a disaster… Yikes. Hope Tua doesn’t knock you guys off of a 5-12 record next year. Best of luck McCorkle.

  14. It was a done deal but then they lost it in like the last 13 seconds.

  15. Putting together a good team involves getting good players any way you can. That would include signing free agents.
It’s hilarious how this “touchback” guy was creaming all over himself last year when his team signed a bunch of free agents that didn’t get his team into the playoffs. I guess he doesn’t know the meaning of the word “hypocrite”.

Bills don’t need McKissick. They scored 80 points in their last 2 games against Belichick. Maybe next game the Bills may have to punt once.

Umm, they weren’t bidding against anyone because no one had any money. Get it? You’re so dumb thinking there is no cap.

The cap ceiling spiked and owners got their 300 million so they have cash, so the prices are higher.

Get it? This isn’t rocket science. NE spent money at the same time because the contracts ended at the same time. Kraft and BB aren’t idiots. That was the plan.

All these idiot teams overpaying for everyone will pay dearly in the end.

  20. It’s hilarious how terrified and desperate this tb6 guy is.

The Patriots are terrible, did you see their last game?

They have no QB, no playmakers, no defense, and have gotten worse since the worst performance in NFL history.

Why is he talking about cap hell when the Patriots are trading away their OL after overpaying all those bum FAs that did nothing last year?

Watching his excuse making as the Patriots get worse and worse and worse is delicious.

    Who is Bill?

You lost out on McKissick and Beane got hoodwinked in all of 13 seconds!

    LOL!

13 seconds! I am still laughing about how that could ever happen for a supposed SB team!

    I just wet myself!

  22. I don’t think that there is anything wrong here.
Strangest thing to me though , is why would McKissick stay with the Commanders , rather than go to the Bills, for the same money ?

  23. Patriots fans shouldn’t worry about the Bills front office. Try focusing on something a little simpler, like getting your team to get the Bills to actually punt the ball in a game.

  24. TB6 – your obsession w/ Buffalo is noted.

At least you’re not saying that the Pats are “loaded with talent” anymore.

You know it’s gonna be a LONG time until they contend again.

  27. You wet yourself no matter what. 13 seconds? Helmet catch, Plaxico wide open!! LOLOL!!!!! I won’t wet myself as I’m a grown up, but I do love the collapse of the biggest cheaters in NFL football. Lost draft picks(LOL) major league fines(LOL) TB proving HE was the franchise and leaving to host trophies down south. Back to Loserville. 7 for 7 with the most inaccurate, uncouth QB in history dropping fined over your best corner(WHO IS NOW GONE) I’m thinking 69-0 this next season(LOL)

Hilarious how delusional pats fans have became with Cuck Jones now at the helm for them.

It’s not like beane didn’t draft. Tre White, Milano, Edmunds, Oliver, Rousseau, newly stolen H. Phillips, Taron Johnson, D. Dawkins, Spender Brown, Gabe Davis, Dawson Knox, Devin Singletary and your new daddy Josh Allen.

Not to mention McD getting career years out of nearly ever free agent from Poyer and Hyde to guys like Jordan Phillips, Diggs and McKenzie. Sorry you lost your way when TB12 left but it’s all over now with Rag Arm McCorkle.

  29. Whether it was a weak move by the WFT or not, no GM with any professionalism would whine to the media about it like a scorned 13 yr old.

  30. “ Keep your 3rd String RB”

Bills fans all of a sudden think third-down RB equals third-string RB. Third-down RB is a starting position, which Bills fans would know if they had one. Which they don’t have because once again they couldn’t close the deal in the final seconds, which they are known for going back to the Scott Norwood.

You blew it to Washington in the end. Unlike the Super Bowl against Washington where you blew it basically immediately including Thurman Thomas looking for his helmet while the blow out started. At least you guys were kind of closer on this one.

There’s a reason the Bills are one of the only organizations without a Lombardi Trophy, let alone the three or more that teams like Washington and others have. Can’t close. Never could. Never will.

Closest they ever get is 13 seconds away.

  31. Man, are there some bitter opposing fans on this article.

    Enjoy the next decade, guys.

  32. Real talk though…who in their right mind chooses the current day Commanders over the current day Bills? Not anyone that would be deemed sane. Bills are a MUCH better squad. Better fans. Etc.

Probably. They are entitled so they just think they’ll keep bouncing into postseasons like it’s no problem because they hilariously think Farkus is BB and Allen is Brady.

Then you look at how many times Allen runs and his pricetag and it becomes a shortened window.

KC and Mahomes are in a similar position. You can’t just assume you can cupcake into the postseason and appear in a SB.

What’s sad for Buffalo is the pre Cap Era was way easier to succeed than this era. Their main hope is Goodell feels bad for them and cheats for them as they try to get that no stadium. Even if that happens, it doesn’t ensure a SB victory. The opponent can still overcome the Goodell cheating and find a way to win. NE did it many times.

  34. McKissic is a third rate RB. No big loss. Besides, you don’t want a clown like that on your team anyway. He’s perfect for Washington

  35. Bills fans how about making it to a Super Bowl in this century before you start the dynasty

  36. the only loser here is JD, sticking with a bottom-feeder organization like the Commanders over the Bills.

The role of Patriots fans now seems to be some sort of “hope police” on Bills articles, to make sure that Buffalo fans don’t get excited about finally being able to watch a good team.

Well, I’m going to carry on. I’ve seen a lot of bad Bills teams, and I’m thoroughly enjoying seeing a good one. I’ve decided that it’s okay to be excited about that.

  38. Beating the Patriots is the Bills SB. Their fans don’t seem to care they came up short to winning the actual SB two years in a row despite having the best team on paper.

    He’s a backup
And Carson Wentz…. Lol good luck
    ======================

A 3rd string RB that’s better than your starter!

  40. I will explain this to those of you who don’t get it. McKissic wanted to stay in WAS but they said no and didn’t make him an offer. So he hit the market, and his agent ultimately reached a hand shake deal with the Bills, meaning the Bills earmarked the cap space and would not use it in other negotiations. At that point, everyone is supposed to be committed. WAS got wind of this, THEN said OK, fine, since someone else made you an offer I guess we will match it. So Mckissic backed out. It’s just as dirty a move as a club making a handshake deal with a player in FA so the player stops entertaining offers and then the club backing out right before the deal is signed, leaving the player in the lurch and having lost critical time in the negotiating window. It’s underhanded and bad faith tactics.
