Inside the Davante Adams three-year, $67.5 million deal (as a practical matter)

The numbers are in on the Davante Adams deal. And, as usual, the initial reports were subject to a little agent-fueled puffery.

For starters, it’s not a five-year, $141.25 million deal. The base amount is $140 million. To get to the maximum value, he needs to get to the Pro Bowl for each of the next five years.

Also, despite that the deal pays out $67.5 million fully guaranteed at signing, it doesn’t. Per a source with knowledge of the transaction, the full guarantee at signing is only $22.75 million.

By early 2023, another $42.92 million in injury guarantees becomes fully guaranteed. To avoid owing Adams that amount, the Raiders would have to cut Adams after only one year, paying him $23.36 million (if he satisfies the workout and per-game roster bonuses) for 2022 — and giving up a first-round and second-round pick. This makes the practical guarantee $65.67 million at signing. But that amount isn’t fully guaranteed.

The structure of the deal may not have been dramatically different than the not-too-little-but-definitely-too-late offer the Packers made. Green Bay doesn’t fully guarantee money beyond the first year of the deal. The Adams deal does not fully guarantee money beyond the first year of the deal.

That said, the deal fully guarantees years two and three as of year two. Green Bay possibly would have insisted on a year-to-year rolling guarantee.

Here’s the full breakdown of the Adams deal.

1. Signing bonus: $19.25 million.

2. 2022 base salary: $3.5 million, fully guaranteed.

3. 2023 roster bonus: $20 million, guaranteed for injury at signing and fully guaranteed in 2023.

4. 2023 base salary: $6.03 million, guaranteed for injury at signing and fully guaranteed in 2023.

5. 2024 base salary: $16.89 million, guaranteed for injury at signing and fully guaranteed in 2023.

6. 2025 base salary: $35.64 million.

7. 2026 base salary: $35.65 million.

8. 2022-26 per-game roster bonus: $500,000 annually.

9. 2022-26 workout bonus: $100,000 annually.

10. 2022-26 incentives: $250,000 for making it to the Pro Bowl, annually.

In reality, it’s a three-year, $67.5 million contract. The final two seasons pay out a whopping $72.5 million that Adams may never see, given that he’ll be 32 when the final two years kick in.

So it’s fair to call it a three-year, $67.5 million deal. It has a real average of $22.5 million. The fluff in 2025 and 2026 push it to $28 million per year. Again, the chances of Adams getting paid $36.25 million at age 32 and 33 are slim, unless he plays incredibly well and the salary cap and the receiver market mushrooms.

Did the Packers offer the exact same deal, both as to money and structure? Even if they did, remember this. There’s no state income tax in Nevada. In Wisconsin, 7.65 cents of every dollar go the state government.

  1. The Raiders got a great player at an affordable price. His back end years will be restructured once they even become an issue.

  2. If Adams thinks Carr and the Raiders are going to get him any closer to a Super Bowl than Rodgers, he’s kidding himself.

  3. So instead of being tagged twice for 2 years and $45 million, Adams got a 3rd year tacked on for $22.5 million. And Green Bay got a first and a second.

  4. Point taken on the taxes, but players pay the tax in state they play each week. 8-9 games in Nevada.

  5. Am I the only person who thinks this is just perfect. Aaron believe-me-i-am-the-smartest-guy-in-the-room Rodgers, worked so hard to get Love driven out of town, got that AND a huge extension, BUT in getting said extension, priced his team out of market for his leading weapon. Priceless

That only applies to base salary. Not signing bonus, not roster bonus, not workout bonus and that constitutes the vast majority of his deal.

    ++++
that Jordan Love got driven out of town? Yes, yes you are.

  8. Adams will have a much better quality of life and much greater shot at a super bowl than if he’d hopped across the St Croix to join our purple helmets.

  9. Raiders still need help on the oline. Without it, Carr’s not gonna get this dude the ball.

Yet both teams were one and done in the playoffs. The Raiders have improved their team since then. The Packers have lost talent. Enjoy watching Jordan Love on the sidelines.

  11. Adams wanted to play with his buddy Carr, his mother is there, his girlfriend wanted to be there. Packers did all they could to keep him .. he wanted to try something different. Fine, no problem .. he did the Packers proud. All this crap about no money cuz of Rodgers, blah blah blah is trash. He wanted out and got his wish saving the Packers over 25 million in salary plus to very nice 1 and 2 picks. Win win.

  12. This upcoming season may prove to be Rodger’s finest hour … watch him masterfully run the offense, and spread the ball around to multiple receivers – leading the Pack to the playoffs, as he works on his third straight MVP season.

  13. As of this moment, Friday night March 18, 2022, eight picks from the first round of the 2022 NFL draft have been traded to other teams. The Packers escaped a huge salary from a 29-year-old wide receiver and picked up a first and second round pick. They may pick up the same picks if the Raiders decide to say goodbye to Adams down the road. Assuming the Packers can find a No. 1 receiver with four of the first 60 picks, this could work out very well for Green Bay. Or not.

I’m not an Adams fan—he’s dropped some balls in playoff games that should have been caught—and I think Aaron Rodgers is in love with Aaron Rodgers at the expense of everyone else in the world. Rodgers would never, ever sacrifice his salary to keep his teammates employed by the team he wants to win the Super Bowl. A Tom Brady Rodgers is not. Rodgers is 39, and right now, has no No. 1 or 2 receiver on the roster. Rodgers is the greatest regular season quarterback in NFL history. That’s praise and an indictment of his post-season woes. Aside from 2010, he gets tight in playoff games because he faces better defenses than he sees in the nearly always weak NFC North.

The Raiders got a bonafide receiving star who still has plenty of tread on the tires, and a guy who will get a lot of attention from defensive secondaries in 2022 and beyond. Derek Carr is a marvelous quarterback who is a better leader of an offense than Rodgers, especially when the game is on the line. He’s got Follow Me Boys chops. Derek Carr has a high-end receiver than he’s familiar with, and this could work out very well in a highly competitive division. Or not.

  14. As a charger fan now seeing we overpaid pretty bad for Mike Williams (3 yr- 60 mil). Allen Robinson was cheaper and even Davante signed for close to that number. Brutal offseason in the AFC West

Whatever the reason, Adams clearly wanted out of Green Bay.

  16. I’m sorry NO WR is worth that kind of money..Not even a 25 yr old Jerry Rice. How many VERY good players could a team sign for 30 million dollars a yr? Answer: 4+

    Well stated

  18. I guess bashing Aaron Rodgers is the trendy thing to do, so the “cool kids” blame him for this.

Rodgers and Adams, LITERALLY posted it was their last dance at the before the season.
Rodgers talking how much he appreciated his teammates, and calling Adams the best one he has ever had, sort of the “Giving flowers to him before hes gone” sort of thing.

Now every one wants to pretend they are surprised? Just so they can grief Rodgers.

  19. i don’t think it’s been mentioned enough:

    * brady recruited AB and russell gage, still trying to get julio jones.
    * mahommes recruited JJSS
    * derrek carr offered to [probably illegally] buy davonte a carr to get him on raiders

meanwhile, the all-pro receiver can’t be convinced to stay on a team that would’ve make him the highest paid receiver ever, by the 4-time mvp who helped make him all that money and who already been to 4 NFC championship games with.

rodgers has made all sorts of receivers better, but pretty remarkable that he couldn’t convince perhaps the best of all time to get over the hump with him.

  20. So arguably the best WR in the game who was Rodgers’ first and second option on most pass plays is gone but Packers fans somehow think they are better off . Draft picks are great in the off season but not so much on a critical 3d and 6 during the regular season . Since Adams was drafted the Packers have failed to add a quality WR through the draft and with the same people in charge expect that futility to continue .

Its really not that remarkable, lets pretend to forget ALL the things that was drawing Adams to LV being from westcoast and college teammate and cut it down to this.

Even if Adams stays in GB, its likely he only gets to play about 3 more seasons with Rodgers. Then what? What if whoever is GBs starter struggles and cant get him the ball then hes trying to sign a new contract with low numbers… Adams was clearly thinking more than just a season or two ahead.

  22. It all fell into place for Adams….he got paid , reuniting with Carr , his family is close by , and he grew up a Raider fan…..so , it has nothing to do with getting out of Green Bay …..cut the crap everybody

The Packers had 2 years to get Adams signed and failed . They decided to let Rodgers hold them hostage with his pseudo intellectual babble while the guy who busted tail and kept his mouth shut was left dangling in the wind . Bottom line all the if there’s people who need to cut the crap it’s Packers fans thinking Adams leaving isn’t a huge loss and for not believing this has everything to do with Rodgers bloated contract which is ultimately a major fail by Green Bay .

  24. Davante, I’m kind of taken back that you agreed to these terms. A heavy dose of regret will accompany your lower numbers that you will generate with the Raiders. Not a good career decision.

  25. Packers fans try to spin this anyway they can…..picks? Ya all drafted Jordan Love😉. Adams knew it was time to move on, you just do not let arguably the best WR in the NFL walk that easy. This is a huge blow. See some QBs restructure their deals to keep stud players around. It’s a sign of respect to your team mates. Ya gotta wonder if Adams heart was even in the play off game against the 9ers……he knew he was leaving and I’d be willing to bet a dollar to a donut Rodgers did too. Could explain why he kept going to Adams in the play off game and looking past Lazard who would have had an easy first down on the final drive against the 9ers.

  26. Everyone keeps saying Adams will regret leaving Rodgers..I disagree, I can name 65+ million reasons why he won’t. But anyways ask ANY WR (or any player) if they prefer less catches and TDs with more money..or more catches and TDs with less money. You’ll get the same answer EVERY TIME.

  27. So many of Adams ex-teammates have jealous eyes with Adams getting out of having to live in Green Bay again

  28. Adams is joining a fraternity of ex-Packer receivers that also believed they were more important than the team. After they left, they all to a player wished they could click their cleats together and be whisked back home to Green Bay. “There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home, there’s no place like home.” Good luck with that, Davonte.
    -James Jones
    -Greg Jennings
    -Javon Walker

  29. Capable wide receivers are becoming a dime-a-dozen. The Raiders got hosed by Green Bay. The Packers lose a malcontent and gain needed cap space PLUS now have four picks in the first 60 players selected in the draft.

Al Davis is probably rolling in his grave.

  30. In East Dakota, we’d be out of our minds with happiness if our Vikings only had to deal with the issues the Packers have. We’re always dreaming about what it must be like to have won titles.

How can you even say that? 4 Picks? Ya all wasted a pick on Love, again Packers fan thinking they win when they lose – there is no replacing Adams but you all act like jilted boyfriends and giving the sour grapes attitude. There is alos no gurantee those 4 picks will come to fruition. The Packers had two years to work this out and they didn’t , then your lying, narcissistic word playing QB eat up all your cap. face it Teh packers do not have hte “It” factor and prolly will find 500 this year. Rodgers will give one last stink eye and retire.

Packers fans get over yourselves – the end is here

  32. I love us Viking faithful predicting doom and gloom for the Packers for the last thirty years. It fits well with our Minnesota mantra of wait until next season (for the last sixty years).
