Source: Deshaun Watson deal carves out potential impact of suspension for pending allegations

When seeing that the Browns would give quarterback Deshaun Watson a five-year, $230 million fully-guaranteed contract, my first thought was that the guarantees mean nothing if/when Watson is suspended over the allegations made against him last year. All teams use language voiding guarantees if a player is suspended. Also, all teams include standard signing-bonus default language in the event the player misses games for which he has received advance compensation in the form of a signing bonus.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Watson deal carves out the current situation, insulating Watson from having the remaining guarantees void or from owing any bonus money back to the Browns.

It makes sense. The Browns are making this move knowing that Watson may well be suspended. It makes sense for any past incidents to be exempt from any potentially voided guarantees or forfeited bonus money.

Via Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, the contract also includes a $1 million salary for 2022. This dramatically reduces the impact of a suspension, if it happens in 2023.

That said, Watson likely isn’t going anywhere over the next five years, so he’ll be getting the full amount of the contract whether it’s guaranteed or not. The true significance of the move comes from the Browns’ willingness to place so much future money into escrow, something most teams won’t do.

  1. I hope his deal includes a good number of massage therapists – hopefully male.

  2. How deeply pathetic the Browns are just gets redefined with every new bit of info about this contract.

  3. “ That said, Watson likely isn’t going anywhere over the next five years”

Umm. Last time he signed a long term deal, he wanted out of it in a year

  4. Watson and Kareem Hunt will help each other become more complete… in assaulting women.

  5. I thought for sure he was going to Atlanta. That city and team turned a blind eye to him murdering dogs, so they probably wouldn’t find anything wrong with what Watson’s done. I’m disappointed the Browns would sink this low, but then again they’re owned by a guy who ripped off truckers with a rebate scam and a fish rots from the head first.

  6. Well the Browns wanted to invest in a “grown-up” at QB and they got Watson who is a….. ummmm, I’m confused on figuring out what this Clown franchise is thinking and saying at times. Lol

  7. I wonder how they’ll handle the press conference or if they’ll even have one.I saw some Cleveland media saying the Browns were “selling their souls” so there is some hostility albeit a little sanctimonious grandstanding in my opinion.

  8. DeAndre Hopkins made Watson a lot of money. I don’t believe he is that great of QB without him.

  9. Three first round picks and $230M guaranteed – a huge mistake. This may in fact be the final nail in the coffin for the Browns.

  10. Watson, more than anything else, just want to turn the page on the pending civil suits, and let his play justify the investment made by the Browns. Those Browns, to state the obvious, who never had, in decades, a top 10 QB, let alone a top 5 QB.

  11. The Browns got an adult they wanted. They didn’t ask for a responsible adult.

  12. He’s never beaten the Ravens or Steelers and was 1-1 against the Bengals, who he lost to in 2020 with Burrow out. Now he has to play them all twice a season,

  13. This deal is insane. I thought Dak and Kurt Cousins were masters of negotiating but Watson has topped them all considering all he is involved with

  14. Brownies are the comic palate cleansers of the NFL. A true clown franchise. Thank you for all the laughs over the years.

  15. You can lawyer this up all you want, but not knowing and not having a consistency from your QB or baggage like this with the commitment made, is still HORRIBLE business.

    HORRIBLE

The Browns fans deserve a lot better than Haslem and the agent orange gimmicks he tries to sell them.

  16. Haslam sold his dad’s gas station business to warren buffett, now using some cash to buy a QB..

  17. If there is a meeting between Haslam, Mayfield, and Watson, who is the ‘adult in the room’?

  18. The browns should be ashamed of themselves basically acting and paying this guy like nothing ever happened, guess nobody in the browns management has a mother, wife, or daughter. The fan base should boycott or in today’s term cancel the browns and not buy a ticket for 5 yrs.

  19. The Browns are the new Vikings and are screwing the rest of the league with that contract. Guaranteed money exploded after the Vikings signed Cousins to, at that time, the first fully guaranteed multiyear QB contract. The Browns asked the Vikings to hold their beer with this contract.

  20. So the Browns started the day with the 3rd best QB in the AFC North and ended the day with 250m less, a sexual predator and the 3rd best QB in the AFC North. Sounds like a typical day for the Browns.

  21. Apparently a guy with this kinda baggage is the “Adult” Qb they craved.

  22. It just shocks me in this entire world there aren’t 32 god-like throwers of the football that can end the QB leading everyone else by the tail syndrome. So the 15 god-like QB’s in the world get to dictate everything and we just watch hoping our team gets a piece.

  23. Man, it’s been a long time since Watson has truly been relevant and putting up some wins. Still has looming legal problems too? Feels like the Browns are really stretching on this one.

  24. He couldn’t win in Texas with draft picks. So now the team called the factory of sadness believes that this was a good idea? How do the fans feel? Like seriously?

  25. The Factory of Sadness had to put in a truly massive bid that they knew Atlanta and New Orleans could. not/would not match to have a serious shot at Deshaun. Will they supply him with weapons, or have they shot their wad on the salary cap and cannot afford any decent players.

  26. The Progressive “At Home With DeShaun Watson” commercials ought to be interesting…

  27. That’s a whole lot of money for a 28-26 QB with a predilection for happy endings… Way to Browns it up.

  28. Even if he plays soon there the browns there gonna f*** this up somehow just like they did with the last what 19 or so qbs

  29. The dude, per a grand jury, isn’t being charged with ANY crimes. He will likely be settling all 22 cases. That’s called justice. That’s the route the alleged victims CHOSE to go. This is how he will pay for his (allegedly) deplorable behavior. Hate the system if you want, but it is what it is. If these women end up feeling as though justice is served, isn’t that all that matters? Does Deshaun Watson then not have the right to continue with his life and his career?
As far as the Browns “sinking this low” get the ef outta here with that man. It’s a business. It’s their job to make money and win games.
What Watson did was wrong. He’s going to pay for it. After that, it’s over.

  30. He will need it, 41% goes to income tax. After that his attorneys and 22 women get a big piece. What is leftover could be as little 10 million per year give or take. Not chump change but also not a big motivator to play especially when injured and it is all guaranteed. Perhaps NO and Atlanta understood the team wrecking risk and math.

  31. “That said, Watson likely isn’t going anywhere over the next five years”
    Wanna bet?
If things do not go well he will do what he did before. Pocket the 50-60 million bonus and demand another trade.

  32. The lowering of base salary isn’t necessarily about reducing the amount a suspension would cost the player, BUT it IS about spreading out the cap hit to the team. Instead of eating up cap it allows what would be a salary to be spread over the life of the contract.

  33. Hopkins was on the Cardinals in 2020 when Watson lead the league in passing. It will be interesting to see what he can do this year.

  34. If I was the league, I would delay and drag out this investigation as long as possible. You try to circumvent any real punishment by doing this, then I would try to make sure any suspension goes into next season.

Agree , a serial sexual abuser isn’t that big of a deal and should be rewarded with $230M . A little thing like 20 sexual assaults shouldn’t keep a team from rewarding Watson because we all know it’s all about winning society norms and values be damned . See how ridiculous it looks to call opposition to Warson’s signing sanctimonious grandstanding . The Browns deserve every criticism that comes their way .

  36. Current Brown’s owner Jimmy Haslam has joined the Art Modell “I had no choice “ fan club

  37. Surprise ! It out that Watson is also a money w#ore. The weeklong striptease style choice of teams had CLE out of the running early until they offered to pay the equivalent of his 2021 salary, distributed over 2023-2026. The extra $30M will come in handy for this civil suit. Watson will come out of this punishment with a year and a half off without losing a thing. And likely with as little remorse as he’s shown so far. It would take a dude as shady as Haslam to show him the way. Weasel.

  38. DeAndre Hopkins is NOT the reason that Watson played so well. Watson’s best year was in 2020….AFTER Hopkins was already in Arizona.

Say what you want about Watkins off-field nonsense, he’s one of the best in the league at the QB position.

  39. Pretty simple here.
If he plays like Tom Brady, he won’t get suspended.
He if he plays just average, he will be suspended.

  40. Where are all the fans now who were bashing me when I continually said by not selling Watson cheap they were actually gaining leverage?

  41. “Hopkins was on the Cardinals in 2020 when Watson lead the league in passing. It will be interesting to see what he can do this year.”

Yes, Watson’s best year was 2020 and without Dropkins. However, he has missed 17 regular season games with the Texans, + he will miss games in 2022 due to the NFL suspension he will receive. IMHO, the Browns will not make the playoffs in 2022.
