Trade for Davante Adams means Raiders are all in with Derek Carr

By giving up a first- and second-round pick and a mammoth contract for receiver Davante Adams, the Raiders are making it clear that another member of the team will soon be making a lot more money, too.

By acquiring Adams, the Raiders are sending a strong signal that they will be extending the contract of quarterback Derek Carr.

Indeed, the Raiders didn’t reunite the Fresno State teammates with the goal of promptly separating them. Although coach Josh McDaniels apparently was smitten with Baker Mayfield during the pre-draft process four years ago, Carr is clearly the better player. McDaniels and G.M. Dave Ziegler clearly have done enough work to come to the conclusion that Carr should indeed be sticking around.

The next question becomes how much will Carr get in his next contract? Once the highest-paid player in NFL history (for a few weeks or so), Carr is languishing at $25 million per year. Will he get $40 million annually? Or will it be closer to $50 million?

Whatever it is, the Raiders likely have a pretty good idea as to what it will be, or they wouldn’t have gone all in for Davante Adams.

  1. Finally, some common sense that will lead to long term stability for the QB position.

  2. Just because the Raiders my have decided that Derek Carr is their current best option does not logically lead to him getting a 40-50M a year deal. What kind of a leap in logic is that? He’s worth what someone is willing to pay him. There is no other team that would pay him even close to that if he was available, so why would the Raiders?

  3. Their first mistake is “going all in” on one Mr Derek Carr….. You already done blew it on step ONE Son???

I am a psychic and I sense All, he says take his face and likeliness off of that embarrassing starship my son calls a stadium!!!!!!!!

  4. It was reported that Carr would leave money on the table if they got Davante. Let’s see if he really meant that.

  5. Over the years, Carr kept a reasonably low profile, despite constant “search for an upgrade” at his position from the raiders front office. This front office (Gruden, Mayock) is gone, Carr is still there and the team should be better in 2022 than in years. My verdict: Well played, Mr. Carr. A refreshing contrast to guys like Kyler Murray.

  6. They will over pay. I’d guess 1/2 of NFL teams wouldn’t even offer Carr a contract over his current salary of $25M per.

  7. “Languishing” is not maybe the best word to describe someone making $25 million a year, but I get what you’re going for in terms of market rates for QBs.

  8. NFL network said the Adam’s deal was dead on Wednesday. I guess the Raiders went to Carr and said to him if you want your guy you’re gonna have to take less cash. It will be interesting if the Raiders get a Carr discount like th Pat’s got with Brady at contract time.

  9. The Raiders were never going to move on from Carr. You will have your typical haters say otherwise. Carr is a big reason McDaniels came here and his outstanding play and leadership are every organizations dream! What a powerhouse They are building!

  10. I mean really…unless Adams is full blooded Aluet why would he choose to stay in Green Bay over California? Aaron is probably happy for him. It’s what he himself wanted to do for a long time now. From a PR relations stand point the Packers were not gonna let that happen. Brady asked for his own ticket and Kraft relented because of all the Super Bowls trophies.

  11. As they should be, Carr also said he would take a HOMEBOY discount and buy Adams a car (Joking) but all in all this team is ready to take it to the next level but can still use a Gilmore and a stud right tackle, RAAAAAAAAIIIDAS!

  12. Derek Carr is one of the most, perhaps the most, underrated players in the entire league. He’s a terrific quarterback and with Adams to go with Fuller and Renfro, a smiling quarterback as well.

  13. Why wouldn’t they be? He’s been one of the best quarterbacks since he came in the league and all the media does a slam him, get over it, he’s damn good

  14. Carr is probably somewhere in the 12-16 range of NFL QB’s. He’s definitely a QB a team can win with. Not sure he’s worth $50M a year?

  15. $40mm to $50mm for Derek Carr? That makes Kirk Cousin’s $35mm look like a bargain.

  16. Carr definitely earned the team going all in with him, after leading the Raiders tot he post season after that hot mess of weirdness, they had.

  17. Can Adams be as successful in LV as he was in GB without Rodgers throwing him the balls? this is going to be very interesting, did Rodgers make Adams great or did Adams make Rodgers great,if it was the latter then he can make Carr great this season.all eyes are on Las Vegas.

  18. Over the last three years Carr’s rating is 99, which makes him a damn fine QB. But only the third best Qb is his own division by that measure. And Herbert is close behind with only two years experience.

If Herbert gets better in 2022 Carr could be both a top ten QB in the NFL, and the worst QB in the AFC West.

  20. I bet those two nerds on good morning football Kyle Brant and Peter schrager want to cry about this.

  21. 50 million???? For what? I’m guessing he’s in for a moderate raise, closer to 30-32 million a year. You were just talking about moving on past this guy and now he’s worth 50 million? Get out of here.

    Taxes for $500, Alex..

  23. This is Carr’s prove it year. My guess is the Raiders are trading for a QB this time next year, cause he remains the 4th best QB in the west.

  24. The one kink in Carr’s armor is he panics when the o-line breaks down & pressure is in his face. Other than that I think Carr is a very underrated and a Top 10-12ish QB. And that’s coming from a Chiefs fan. Carr will sign an extension that equals Davante’s deal in terms of years and get $35+ a year!

  25. Who are we to judge whether or not he is overpaid?Better than at least half of the other starting QBs playing right now.Only real weapon he has had is Waller.Yet everyone bags on the guy.Stays out of trouble, good teammate, leader and pretty durable. All of this from people who can’t even draw a legal formation on a piece of paper but are personnel experts. Not even a Raider fan but c’mon. Is this how low we have evolved as a society?Nothing but hate and jealousy

  26. Carr is a good player. Makes sense to keep him, though that division is brutal so perhaps the ceiling is limited. I don’t know about $40m-$50m per season though. He’s good but he’s not that good.

  27. What sort of contract does a QB who is clearly better than Dak Prescott get nowadays?

  28. I have high hope for the Raiders..well…except for McDaniels. I never thought that he was head coach material and his record support that.

If McDaniels can’t succeed with the Raiders great roster, he will never succeed as a head coach.

As Herbert gets better than Carr, I predict Wilson will get worse.

  30. If Herbert gets better in 2022 Carr could be both a top 10 QB in the NFL and the worst QB in the AFC West.
Huh?? Herbert is farrrrr better than Carr is right now!! Not even close. Go back and watch the 2 TD passes in their last game. No way Carr gets the ball in those windows, not even sure if Mahomes, Rodgers or Allen do? Word is the kid’s pissed from missing the playoffs and has been in the gym everyday. First time since high school he’ll have the same offensive coach/system in consecutive years! Dude is gonna be a monster n next season!

  31. Adams went to Vegas to play specifically with his College QB. Carr is in the top half of the league at his position. He’s been borderline great, at times, and that was with all the dysfunction going on with the Coaching Staff and GM.

  32. The Packers, and Rodgers, knew for several weeks Adams wanted to play with Carr in Vegas. It was common knowledge Adams purchased a $12M dollar mansion in Vegas in late April. It was no surprise the Packers tagged him. Everybody knew it was only a placeholder until the paperwork was done. Win-win.

Says the most prolific commenter on any Packers-related news. It’s amazing how your take is always so positive on the Packers, even when your team is on the receiving end of yet another devastating blow.

Then you’d be very wrong. Dak makes 40+ mill per, Goff makes 33 mill per and he’s a backup. Carr would get close to 50 mill per on the open market, as he would be the best QB that’s hit the open market in years. He’s 30, grades firmly in the top 10 of QB’s, despite having one of the worst supporting casts. There would be a bidding war, and in the end Carr would end up close to 50. That’s what happens to every 30 year old to 10 QB who hits the market, they get top teir money. That’s the way NFL contracts work. You can barely get a backup QB for 20 mill per now.

Raiders were NEVER talking about moving on from Carr. The media speculated that they might, which should not be confused with the Raiders actually considering it. All they’ve done over and over is shown full commitment to him, shutting down every team that has ever called looking to trade for him. When I say shut down, they literally said “he’s not available”, and they were being offered 2 first round picks and some change. It is now known that both NE and Indy offered AT LEAST that much. Carr should get what he would in the open market, which would be close to 50 mill per. Since Raiders brought in Adams, I’m guessing Carr does take a team friendly deal. That means he’s going to take much less than he’s actually worth.
