For the first time since 2007, the Falcons will have a different Week 1 starter than Matt Ryan. The team is trading their longtime quarterback to the Colts.

They are replacing Ryan with Marcus Mariota.

The Falcons announced a two-year deal with Mariota on Monday.

Mariota spent his first five years in Tennessee after the Titans made him the second overall choice in 2015, and Falcons head coach Arthur Smith was on the Titans’ staff all five years. Smith was the offensive coordinator in Mariota’s final year in Tennessee when Mariota started six games.

Mariota went 29-32 as a starter with the Titans. He was benched in favor of Ryan Tannehill midway through the 2019 season and Tennessee advanced to the AFC Championship Game.

Mariota’s best season was in 2016 when he completed 61 percent of his passes for 3,426 yards with 26 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He rushed for 349 yards with two touchdowns that season.

He did not make a start the past two seasons while backing up Derek Carr with the Raiders but appeared in 11 games as a change-of-pace quarterback. Mariota threw a touchdown and ran for another in his limited playing time.

  1. And just like that, it’s a totally different Falcons team. Enjoy the gadget player in Mariota. Would love to see him turn his career around with Atlanta, but I don’t have high hopes.

  2. At this point in their careers, this is an upgrade for the Falcons. They can try and mold Mariotta while also getting a 3rd round pick for the expended Ryan.

  3. I wish Marcus well in Atlanta. I wanted my Raiders to keep him as a backup, but it was pricey, and he really wanted to be a starter again.

  4. Falcons looking at third or fourth in the division again. Some teams just don’t want to win.

  5. Winston, Darnold, and now Mariota, looks like Brady is going to sweep the NFC South.

  6. Looks like Matty Ice is staying and he should. He hasn’t been the Falcons problems, if anything they’ve been the Detroit Lions to his Matthew Stafford since the SB loss.

  7. Both the former #1 Pick and #2 Pick signed within hours of each other to 2 year deals in the same division………get your popcorn ready

  8. 2015 revisited….Mariota vs. Winston twice a year

At least the Saints/Falcons rivalry will still be spicy.

  9. Remember when their TE tweeted last week that the Falcons were looking scary….right

  10. Yikes. Maybe someone should investigate Smith and Blank for throwing games along with Ross. This is so bad it’s criminal.

  11. Doesn’t take much of a genius to figure the Falcons will be drafting a QB (or two) next month.

  12. So this is the guy whose offense caused Mariota to be benched, and then simplified the playbook for Tannehill where he succeeded? Great.

  13. I’m glad to see Mariota get a second chance as a starter. I’m sure the Falcons will draft a quarterback this year or next and Mariota is just a bridge to the next era. People who are upset that Mariota isn’t as good as Ryan should probably wake up and realize that the Falcons weren’t winning the Super Bowl this year with Ryan, either. It’s time to move on to the future.

Too bad my Vikings’ leadership doesn’t understand this concept.

  14. So Bridgewater or Dalton to the Niners after they are going to have to cut Jimmy G or take a 7th rounder from Seattle or a 6th from Carolina, both teams would more likely to wait until he is cut then offer up any real draft picks or to very much disappointment of pft the Niners actually keep Jimmy G. Or the Niners can send 3 2nd rounders, their 23 and 24 third rounders and 3 4th rounders to Tampa for Brady that should equal about two 1st rounders the Niners don’t have.

  15. Atlanta has finally committed to rebuilding and needed a bridge quarterback at a reasonable price. If he can stay healthy, Mariotta is a drama-free, underrated QB and I think Atlanta will have a better record this year. Still shocked at how little Atlanta got by trading Ryan.

Bridgewater already signed with the Dolphins.

  17. This isn’t about the Falcons thinking Mariota is a upgrade over Ryan. If you haven’t paid attention, the previous regime ran the Falcons into the ground and they were in cap hell. Ryan was going to cost the Falcons 48 million in cap. The team is in a rebuild and it didn’t make sense to pay a 36 year old QB with no talent around him 48 million when they could free up money and get a 3rd round pick to help with their rebuild plan.

  18. It is now projected that the Tampa Bay Bucaneers will go 6-0 in the division in 2022 season.

  19. Can’t help but remember the Mariota we got in that must-win against the Jags a few years back, when he threw that brutal stiff-arm. Wish THAT guy was the guy he is every game, but alas. Good for him, though.

  20. Ohh…I hope Glass Mariota can hold up to the pass rush in the NFC South between Cam Jordan and the Saints and Shaq Barrett and the Bucs…I don’t see him finishing the season.

Sure but the Falcons are eating $40M against that cap to send Ryan to the Colts! The Colts absolutely fleeced the Falcons on this deal

Trade Matt Ryan and sign Marcus Mariota?? None of this makes any sense.

    ——————————————————————————————————

Next years QB class is much stronger than this one. I’d imagine Atlanta is banking on having an awful season so they can get a new franchise QB next April

Oof, Falcons capping fans on this deal. The tank is in.
    ——————————————————————————————————————
Who do you think they can afford while still paying Matt Ryan $40 million? If they wanted to tank they would’ve just signed Mike Glennon or Cam Newton.

  24. Saints 4-1 against Brady the last two years.
Re-check how easy it is for tawwmy in the nfcs

  25. Brady is back to Buccaneers and should win their division easily next reason. Up against the cap, it is tanking time for Falcons.

  26. I think this is smart. He knows the system. If he plays well, let him play. He can groom another QB to take over and they have trade bait next year. If he doesn’t do well, play whoever he is grooming sooner.

  27. I like Mariota. He can be a starting QB in the NFL, given a chance. This is his chance.

  28. People are forgetting how good Jameis Winston was playing before getting illegally hit to be taken out for the remainder of the year… by the Yucs, which we still swept with Siemian and Taysom Hill.. shutting them down to ZERO!! Again… oh wait I forgot they kicked a garbage time FG the year before to not get a big GOOSE EGG!!!

  29. Bucs should have an easy path to the NFCS crown!

Mariota and the Falcons should be more entertaining then the Winston minus Sean Payton Saints.. Panthers are just out matched..

  30. He’ll be a serviceable starter to bridge the gap if they draft a QB this year or next. Ryan is aging and expensive. He might have a couple of good years left, and Indy is gambling on it, but Atlanta is better off spending that money to build a stronger roster for Mariota or a young QB to work with.

  31. “Winston, Darnold, and now Mariota, looks like Brady is going to sweep the NFC South.“ well last year the Saints swept Brady, so we’ll see.

As for Mariota going to Atlanta, he’s a clear bridge to (likely) Malik Willis

  32. As long as he doesnt throw the errant pass late in the game, he will do fine if the rest of the team is strong around him. Or he’ll be running for his life till he gets his clock cleaned.

  33. If I’m a Falcons fan, and thank God I’m not, I would be bumming hard. This is how your team treats it’s greatest QB in franchise history?!

  34. I wish Marcus the best. He was the best backup in the league, the best backup the Raiders have had since 1974.

The Saints, Falcons and Panthers have made life so easy for old man Brady

The Saints have beaten Brady four times in a row in the regular season and lost a very close playoff game to the Bucs when their Defense played lights out. Brady destroyed a laptop the last time they played. You think the Bucs will beat the Saints in 2022?

  36. I don’t follow the falcons. Maybe one of their fans can help me out:
Is Arthur Smith really the smartest guy in the room, or does he just think he is?

  37. Mariota’s biggest issue since college has been taking big hits. He needs to learn from Russell Wilson and get out of bounds or throw the ball away. Stay healthy for your team.

  38. Smith knows Mariota VERY well from their time together with the Titans. If he is the guru that he supposedly is then this year’s iteration of the Falcons will look very different as he overhauls the system to fit the QB. If he does, they will be in the market for a back-up with a similar skill set since their offense will be markedly different than what Rosen can reliably run.

However, if he runs the same offense with Mariota as he did with Ryan? The Falcons are in for mediocre to bad years until they have to blow the whole thing up again.
