Danielle Hunter feels great after two “pretty unfortunate” years

Danielle Hunter was the subject of trade talk until restructuring his contract and receiving a vote of confidence from new General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah.

The Vikings edge rusher missed all of 2020 with a neck injury, and he played only seven games in 2021 before tearing a pectoral muscle.

After returning to work with Rischad Whitfield, “The Footwork King,” on Wednesday in Houston, Hunter said he is fully healthy again.

I feel great,” Hunter said, via KPRC-TV. “The last two years were pretty unfortunate, but I just got to stay positive and have positive people around me. My family’s been there, coaches have been there. So I’m ready to go this season.”

If Hunter is healthy, and new addition Za'Darius Smith is healthy, look out. The Vikings will have one of the top pass rushing duos in the NFL. But it’s a big “IF.” Smith played only one regular-season game and one playoff game last season because of a back injury.

Hunter has played 85 career games and totaled 60.5 sacks, 90 quarterback hits and six forced fumbles. Smith has played 91 career games and totaled 44.5 sacks, 112 quarterback hits and eight forced fumbles.

“I see him every year with the Packers,” Hunter said. “He goes against our quarterback and sometimes I just know what he’s going to bring to the table before he even gets out there. So it will be a good combo between us and all the defensive linemen we have.”

  1. I want this to be a long term gm/coach grouping, but methinks 2/3 years…they’ve Cousins’d themselves out of relevancy and are betting on two studs that have been duds at DE…oh, and they have 1 NFL starting corner and a line that ain’t great. Did Spieljerk and Zimmer ever leave? Hope to be proved wrong.

  2. Sure shows the GM is a rookie paying all that money to two players with seven and a half games between them last year, should have all day throwing against them this year.

  3. Yes, a big IF. But they are both healthy today, so lets talk about that until we can’t talk about that. The Vikings will be top 2 in sacks this season. Book it.

  4. All-in with Hunter and Z’Smith. If they stay healthy, they will wreak havoc on QBs. If they both miss time, will be a long season.

  5. Where’s that anti-Kwesi dude to let us know that the new GM has done absolutely nothing this off season?

    +++++
    The Vikings were top 2 in sacks last season so….status quo (8-9)?

  7. Anyone who has ever played for the Vikings has been through very unfortunate years – injured or not.

  8. I have to say, the division could be anyones next year, especially either Minnesota or Green Bay, but Chicago too and you never know……perhaps Detroit. Play the odds. Maybe the new HC in Minnesota will listen to what Cousins thinks Cousins can do best, and accommodate him a little bit instead of resenting him every waking minute of every waking day. If this opportunity doesn’t breath new-life into Cousins, nothing will.

    You definitely lost me when you include the Bears and Lions. The Packers should be favored, until they show us different. Now, about Cousins. 6 different OC’s and playbooks in 6 seasons? Yet, also the only QB in 6 seasons to throw for over 3,600 yards and 25 TDs each and every season. Weird. Now it seems he is guaranteed to play at least the next two seasons under the same OC (his head coach), and playbook. I absolutely expect 4,500 yards and 40 Tds this season.

  10. Do we really think the NFC North will be decided by pass rushers?LOL.It will be about the QB again like every other year.Viking fans that is why we love you guys.Always try to fit your narrative into reality. The Bears have had the best pure pass rusher in the division over the last few years in Mack. How did that work?Packers had Z.Smith and P.Smith but that is not the reason they win the division every year.It is about the QB plain and simple.Losing Adams hurts but not enough to lose the division. The Vikings have one postion of strength in the division today….WR.Packers have OL,Secondary,DL,Coach, and oh yeah the QB.Pretty much a wash at RB,LB now with Z.Lions and Bears sorry neither are close yet.

    Yet with all that statistical success in those 6 seasons how many times has he won more than 8 games? Once.
