Defensive lineman Kerry Hyder had a productive season for the 49ers in 2020 and he’ll try for another one in 2022.

Field Yates of ESPN reports that the 49ers are signing Hyder to a one-year deal. It is a $1.5 million pact with $750,000 guaranteed and another $750,000 in sack incentives.

Hyder had a career-best 8.5 sacks for the 49ers in 2020 and signed with the Seahawks as a free agent last year. He had 33 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and two fumble recoveries before being released earlier this month.

Hyder also had an eight-sack season in Detroit in 2016 and the 49ers are hoping lightning will strike a third time with Hyder as part of their pass rush.

  1. Seattle paid Hyder $3.65 million for one unproductive season, including half of that as a dead money hit on this year’s cap. Back under Coach Kocurek and the ‘wide-9’ defensive front he’ll likely produce again for the 49ers, at less than half the cost.

  2. Finally a good FA signing from my 9ers. Hyder “balled” before when he was with them.

I haven’t been impressed with their other FA signings & letting some key players like D.J. Jones & Lakelin Tomlinson walk. Don’t get me started on how they botched the JG situation. Between overestimating his worth & letting him wait so long to get his shoulder fixed, no one wants him. It looks like they’re either stuck with him next season & the cap hit that prevents them from re-signing more of their FA’s or they cut him & get nothing.
