What will the 49ers do with Jimmy Garoppolo?

They’ve been trying to trade him. They may have missed their window to maximize the return. So what will the 49ers do with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo?

It’s a complicated situation, to put it mildly. He’s due to make more than $25 million in the final year of his current contract. He’s recovering from shoulder surgery. Last year, the 49ers invested three first-round picks and a third-rounder in Trey Lance. They’ve also given a one-year, $2 million contract to Nate Sudfeld, a clear signal that he’ll potentially be the backup to Lance.

We’d heard the 49ers had been telling interested teams they have an offer of two second-round picks. If they did, they should have taken it. If they did, they surely don’t have it now.

At some point, they may have nothing. Even if they do, is it a team Garoppolo will want to join? If the new team wants him to extend his contract as part of the trade, will he decline? He’s got leverage.

So do the 49ers. With none of the money guaranteed, they can squat on him until the eve of the start of the regular season, waiting for an injury elsewhere to create an immediate need for Garoppolo or ultimately cutting him.

The sooner they move on, the sooner they’ll clear $25 million in cap space. That can be diverted to other players who have earned second deals, such as Nick Bosa and Deebo Samuel. They’ll also officially commence the process of persuading the rest of the locker room to pivot from the popular Garoppolo to Lance.

There’s one other possibility. They could keep him. They could even re-do his deal to convert some of the money he’s due to earn into incentives, based on playing time and/or performance. Let him compete. If he’s better than Lance, let him play.

Lance is the great unknown in this analysis. Only coach Kyle Shanahan knows if he’s ready to entrust the offense to Lance. If Shanahan is, goodbye Jimmy. If Shanahan has doubts, and if they can’t get a good return for Garoppolo, maybe they keep him for another year.

However it plays out, there aren’t many open seats on the quarterback carousel. The Texans stand out the most. The Panthers remain unsettled. The Falcons are a possibility, too. The Seahawks could be a destination, if the 49ers are willing to trade him in the division.

It’s definitely a conundrum for the 49ers. With the league convening over the next few days in Florida for the first in-person annual meetings since 2019, maybe the 49ers can finally find a willing taker for Garoppolo, at an acceptable price. If not, the next move is anyone’s guess.

  1. Part of me wonders if Jimmy G is devious enough to have scheduled his surgery as a power play to get released. But I’m not convinced he’s devious enough. I think my Niners just screwed the pooch this time around.

  2. Love my team but I think the Niners got greedy expecting a lions share haul of picks when something decent was offered to them. Now they’re gonna say we wanted Jimmy back from the start to save face.

  3. >> Last year, the 49ers invested three first-round picks and a third-rounder in Trey Lance.

QBs have high bust rates. If he’s a bust they are probably seeing it and worried, so maybe it makes sense to keep Jimmy G.
Or go with Trey, let him bust, and draft a new QB.
Or have the NEXT GM draft a new QB!

  4. The Texans are one of the least obvious, they have a promising 2nd year QB.

  5. All he’s done is get the Niners to a SB and 2NFCCG’s, not happening with Lance.

  6. Lance has bust written all over him but after giving up 3 first round picks they don’t have a choice but to play him and hope for the best. Jimmy would be an upgrade in Carolina, the Texans are going with Mills and doubt they’d send him to Seattle. A real cluster they’ve in…

  7. Hes the starter until further notice/ Who said he was being traded? quit saying that all the time, hes a proven winner the stats dont lie.

  8. The Niners really messed this up. They gave up way way too much for a developmental QB who won’t be ready for another year or two and they treated Jimmy terribly despite the plain fact that without him they are nowhere near a playoff team. At this point, I would figure they’d just kinda sorta admit their mistake and keep Jimmy for another playoff run but Shan and Lynch are too proud for that.

  9. I don’t understand. No matter how high you picked Trey Lance he’s not ready to start. The 49’ers would be fools to let Jimmy Garappolo go and it would set them back at least two years.

  10. Jimmy Glass isn’t worth more than a 4th round pick. He is decent for the 4 games per season he isn’t on IR. 49ers asked too much and now they will need to release him or delay Lance’s development and roll with the Glassmam again.

I don’t think they did. I think Shanahan knows Lance isn’t ready. Would not surprise me one bit if he knew, even told Jimmy, to wait a few weeks and have it, and they purposely asked for a high price for him. It’s a win-win: if a team offered a first-round pick, then they take it, and if not, they’ve got Jimmy as an insurance policy in case Lance isn’t ready to go.

They open it up for competition. If Lance is ready, the job is his, and they can trade Jimmy by the deadline to get something for him (and allow him to go somewhere he can compete for or flat-out be the starter). If Lance isn’t ready, then Jimmy G is the Niners’ QB in 2022 and Lance — well, might be a bust. That’s WAAAAAY too early to say. Not nearly enough playing time. But they owe it to that locker room of players ready to win NOW to do all they can to win. Maybe Lance is ready to take the next step. Someone above said it: only Shanahan, really, knows.

  12. The biggest challenge is that he’s just not very good. Teams that are still looking for a QB, are looking for a franchise QB. Jimmy G’s not a franchise QB. If he was, the 49ers wouldn’t have made the move they did for Lance last year.

  13. Maybe it’s because I’d love to see it happen. Why not trade Jimmy to the Browns for Baker? Throw in a 4th, and Browns won’t get a better return.
It’s a stop gap if Watson gets suspended, and back up if he gets hurt.
It gives Kyle a potential project QB, who just 2 years ago was a pretty damn good Qb, in the event Lance isn’t who they thought he was. Both QB problem teams have an easy solution. If Browns are willing to pay Baker to be a back up, they certainly would take Jimmy at the price.

    Shoot holes in it!

  14. Lance is not ready .. he may not ever be ready … sometimes you just have to go with the devil you know

  15. What will the 49ers do with Garoppolo? Probably go deep in the playoffs again, which isn’t as likely with Lance.

Coming into the draft, most analysts said Lance was a developmental pick and would need to sit for a few years. The second he was drafted, many of the same analysts started asking why Lance wasn’t starting right now. Any serious discussion about the situation has to cut through a year of nonsense hand-wringing because most TV sports media has lost all ability to talk about scheme and fit and replaced it with conjecturing drama.

  16. Who in the world would give up two second rounders for an injury-prone QB in the final year of his contract?

Sounds like something my Colts would do

  17. “ Part of me wonders if Jimmy G is devious enough to have scheduled his surgery as a power play to get released. ”

That’s a worthy consideration. But hindsight being 20/20 a release now costs him $25M that likely no one else will give him now that almost all the QB situations are settled. If he was aiming for the release, he wouldn’t want it now.

My guess is the 49ers keep him for this season. They made a Super Bowl with him and are coming off a final four season with him. There isn’t much return to be had in a trade at this point (barring injury). And there’s not like a preponderance of the evidence that Lance can take them farther. Another year of Jimmy and another year of seasoning for Lance seems like really the best they can make out of him at this point.

Unless of course someone gets hurt and a team offers the Bradford Eagles-to-Vikings desperation package.

  18. Just don’t understand the whole thing.
JG has been taking the 49ers deep into the playoffs. Yeah,he’s been a little inconsistent once he got there, but isn’t that something coaching should work out?
If Lance really popped, and was an obvious upgrade, then they should have moved Jimmy long before now.
Now, they think Lance is ready, but Jimmy is expensive damaged goods.
The only positive is that Jimmy is being very adult & mature about the entire fiasco.

  19. There’s no reason to think they have to move on without a good offer. Lance only has one season under his belt, a season where he mostly sat. 25 mil for another year is a bargain in this market. I don’t think they’re in a hard place here at all. In fact, they have a pretty good situation. So long as his recovery is going well, they can sit back and wait for the offer they want. And all of this assumes of course that Trey Lance isn’t a known bust within the organization already.

  20. Niners are in trouble.

Not built correctly at all. Very top heavy.

Losing McDaniel will sting a bit. If Trey Lance isn’t a savior this whole is gonna blow up in their faces.

Very top heavy roster. How long can you count on Trent Williams? How much will not having those first round picks effect the team they can put around Lance?

It does appear they should’ve kept those picks and just gave Garoppolo more to work with.

  21. Man seems like 9ers are always having two QB’s problems. When most teams can’t find one I’ve watched Montana/Young, pretty sure Young and Garcia overlapped, Alex/Kap now Jimmy and Lance maybe.

  22. Why is everyone so down on garoppolo, sure maybe a little injury prone but 31-15 as a 49er, 1 SB, and 2 nfccg’s, not to mention a leader in the locker room and no off field issues, come on,of that’s not a franchise qb i am in a differentworld, what is a franchise qb?, under .500 record, legal issues, and an inflated ego.

  23. He had 12 Interceptions last year, so move him to CB where stats like that make you a Pro Bowler.

  24. It was reported that TB12 wants to play for someone besides Tampa. Trade in the works?

  25. Lynch is going to screw this up. 49ers are lucky Garoppol0 isn’t a diva and demanding like some other NFL QB’s. The 49ers are going to have to keep him now because everyone knows Lance is not ready.

  26. Why do I feel like Jimmy G will be the last QB picked up yet he will still take his team to a wildcard?

  27. If Trey Lance can’t beat out Jimmy G the same way Mac Jones beat out Cam Newton, then Trey Lance is not the answer. Keep Jimmy G.

  28. The Texans should not consider Jimmy G. They need to build around Davis Mills in 2022 and find out if Mills is the QB for the Texans future. If Mills is the future of the Texans after 2022, great! If not, they have (2) 1st’s in 2023 and (2) 1st’s in 2024 as draft capitol to move up and get a QB in 2023!

  29. TL;DR – He’s a game manager and a bit more – a game manager+

Really don’t know why he gets so much hate, SF has won a lot more than lose with him, and he carries himself as an adult and represents the team well.

Jimmy is kind of a “game manager+” – his game is ball control, win TOP, solid D and don’t make stupid mistakes. If Jimmy were more risk averse, he’d just be a game manager – but he will take risks that they won’t – tighter windows, etc. Jimmy needs better overall average talent around him than say Mahomes does – Jimmy doesn’t elevate players the way Patrick can. Jimmy CAN lead a team back from a deficit – but you’ll never mistake him for Patrick – he’s not the “everyone get on my back and I’ll carry you” QB and he never will be. Jimmy has functional mobility – able to avoid sacks and step up in the pocket, and we’re not quite to the point of timing him with a sundial.

The NFL and fans are so enamored with dynamic QBs – Mahomes, Allen, Jackson, Burrow and Lance if he pans out. Jimmy isn’t in that conversation – you don’t watch his offense with the same anticipation as you would a top dynamic QB. Jimmy plays on schedule, structured offense – that’s his game. Play breaks down, not his game but he’ll try.

Jimmy isn’t the type to make a huge impact on a “broken” team – he’ll always need a solid team around him. So yeah, game manager+ fits – a solid team will do very well with him as long as the game is structured.

  30. Trey Lance couldn’t hit an elephant in the ass from ten yards away. As a Rams fan, I love this

  31. It seems more nfl people are concerned about individual stats than team results. Look at Dak Prescott’s stats and he’s a better qb than Jimmy G. Look at team results and Jimmy G is head and shoulders above Dak and I don’t think the Niners are a better team than Dallas. I’d much rather have Garrapolo in Dallas than Prescott.

  32. I hope that the Niners keep Jimmy for at least another year. It would help Lance immensely.

Some of the best QBs in history sat behind the starter for 2 or more years:

    Steve Young behind Joe Montana
    Arron Rodgers behind Farve
    Brady behind Bledsoe

  33. The only reason that Mac Jones beat out Cam Newton is because Cam sucked…big time.

Jimmy got the Niners to 2 NFC Championship games and one Super bowl in the last 3 years. Cam couldn’t get the Pats to the playoffs.

If was Jimmy I would go to the Lions, because he owns Aar
    _______

Owned as in that time he threw 8 passes in the NFC title game, or the recent playoff game when he led the 9ers offense to TWO Field goals? Yes the 9ers have done well, but its not because Jimmy is dominating anything.

  35. Love all the disparaging comments about Lance from the armchair GMs. Lance’s physical tools are obvious. Shanahan will scheme enough to keep him productive this season.
When he does well, none of said GMs will show up

  36. Keeping Jimmy G. will divide the locker room when Trey goes through the normal growing pains. Niners are better off getting rid of him even if Trey sucks.

Trey Lance couldn’t hit an elephant in the ass from ten yards away. As a Rams fan, I love this.”

Typical Rams fans talking out of his butt. Have you actually witnessed this 1st hand? You don’t know what your talking about; just repeating what you’ve read from online pundits.
I went and watched training camp last year. Sure Trey is raw, but the guy has a cannon for an arm. I watched him throw a pass 40yds down the field & hit ex-ram Trent Sherfield in stride. He needs playing time to hone his skills & “slow the game down”.

  38. Keep him, probably as the starter, or cut him. It was complete fake news when Lynch said he has offers for Jimmy G a QB that is often injured, game choker and very high salary. It was a complete lie to try to drum up a market, but Jimmy G is quite unproven coming off of shoulder surgery to give away any high draft picks and get stuck with that salary. Really the only trade option is to either the Niners pay a good part of his salary or package him with a 2nd round pick or so which makes no sense because he can easily be cut.

But after watching Lance throw and how he completely disappeared from Shanahan’s offense by the end of the year doesn’t bode well for Lance as a capable NFL starter anytime soon if ever.

  39. S.F.’s 1st mistake was giving up 3 – 1st round picks to get Lance.
And he hasn’t looked all that great when he spelled Jimmy G.
I think they have to keep him if they expect to compete for a playoff spot.

  40. This is probably the inevitable outcome of giving up so much to trade up so high without even knowing which QB they were going to draft.

Imagine if they would have just gotten fully behind Garoppolo and added more playmakers around him. Imagine if they’d signed Brady. Imagine if they’d drafted Mac Jones. There are so many paths that would have almost certainly resulted in either more success or stability than they’re looking at now, but they had to do it the hard way.

They were a few plays away from the Super Bowl last season with an injured Garoppolo. They were a few plays away from winning one a couple years prior. Seems like the remaining distance to cover with Garoppolo is a *lot* less than the distance they would have to cover with anyone else.

  41. The simple truth is Jimmy G isn’t going any where this year, reason T lance is not ready. We tend to over think things.

  42. Who in the world would give up two second rounders for an injury-prone QB in the final year of his contract?

Carolina Panthers on line one, sir.

  43. Jimmy has a 7 million injury guarantee. If he can’t pass a physical in April that is due to him. He won’t be able to pass that physical given the surgery. So 49ers are on the hook for that plus another $1.4 for the season unless they can trade him. If they cut him he still gets that money from the 49ers

  44. Did all these people talking about Jimmy G being “good” watch any of the NFC playoffs this year? The guy puts both l’s in “liability.”

  45. It was reported that TB12 wants to play for someone besides Tampa. Trade in the works
    ———————-
A swap would be great if the 49ers had anything to offer player wise.

  46. Obviously they should have kept all those picks and drafted Mac Jones last year with their own pick. The guy Kyle really wanted.

  47. Here’s a shocker: Keep Jimmy G., start him, let him take the team to the playoffs like he did last season. By golly, he beat the Packers in the snow and cold at Lambeau. So you ashcan him for that?

Everyone is so “Kiperized”(firmly believing that every kid in the draft is outstanding and better than a veteran) about Lance that they think he will be an automatic upgrade from Jimmy G. One more year with a veteran and giving the rookie the chance to develop is not a bad thing, unless of course, you own stock in publications about the NFL draft.

Bucs should buy low on him, that way they have a QB for next year.
    —————————————————————————————————————-
I guess you think the Bucs have no salary cap.

  49. Two twos seems like a stretch, perhaps it was a two and a conditional two. The 49ers passing on that doesn’t compute, and a plausible theory surmises it was the Commandos that offered that and Team Jimmy was adamant he didn’t want to play there and wouldn’t sign an extension.

  50. Not sure why everyone is so down on Lance. They took him knowing he was a project and he flashed some skills in his few starts, made more wow plays than guys like Zach Wilson and would have been much better than Fields and Lawrence with more playing time. Jimmy can hold down the fort on a great team but not make them better, the coach was scared to put the ball in his hands in the playoffs. Gonna have to move on now and better the roster, do or die with Lance.

  51. You can pay Jimmy G 1/3 of Rodgers’ contract and still get further in the playoffs. Keep him.

  52. The 9ers are doing the right thing by keeping g10 on ice..by looking at clues given the 9ers are gonna 1. Lance 2.sudfled 3. Jimmy. That way he dont get hurt again..lynch already they budgeted for him so I think he comes back and take their loss next year in free agency..another clue is sudfeld and lance..I dont see the 9ers staying with just 2 qbs and that’s why I think g10 stays and will only play in emergency role. Unless there’s a qb drafted g10 stays until next year or someone trades for him this year. So far their planning for g10 to be on the roster next year..their not gonna release him and he goes to a rival and on top pay dead money .nope their staying put..that’s what the clues are saying..they’d rather have him walk next year then release him up for nothing

  53. time to start including Tennessee in the discussion of teams needing a QB after Tannehill’s 3 INT chokedown in the playoffs

  54. If lance is a bust why are they just going after sudfeld..he cant get us wins. And so far they haven’t added any other vets to the quarterback roster.if it were me I’d trade g10 straight up for baker Mayfield. Kyle will make Baker look good and possibly trade him..

Under .500 record… Was that Watson’s fault? Jimmy can’t break 4,800 passing yards or 33 TDs even with a 17 game season. Watson had that in his last season played. I’m sure you think Barry Sanders was horrible, since the Lions team he was on had so many losing seasons. Right?

  56. His teammates love him. He’s good enough to win. Load up on that defense and eliminate close games.

Jimmy doesn’t win a single playoff game without Deebo to trot down the field on a long TD run/catch. Let’s stop pretending like a guy with a 73 playoff passer rating has done anything good in the playoffs.
