Nathaniel Hackett: Offense will be what Russell Wilson likes to do

The Broncos sent five draft picks and three players to the Seahawks in order to acquire quarterback Russell Wilson in a move that they hope sets them up at the quarterback position for years to come.

That plan would be complicated by putting Wilson into an offensive system that doesn’t mesh with his skills, especially after Wilson expressed dissatisfaction with the way the Seahawks operated offensively in recent years. On Sunday, head coach Nathaniel Hackett made it clear that the team is going to put Wilson’s views front and center when it comes to putting together their scheme.

“Once get to know him, understand him, we’ll build it around him. So what is it going to be? It’s going to be what Russell likes to do,” Hackett said, via Mike Klis of KUSA.

Hackett didn’t explicitly say that the Broncos plan to let Russ cook in 2022, but both the price the Broncos paid for the quarterback and his actual answer suggest that might not be a bad title for their playbook.

  1. Yeah. After Russ took all the grocery money in Seattle there wasn’t much left to cook with. Broncos, you’ve got a year or two before it’s your turn to listen to him whining.

  2. So your offense isn’t going to block very well, and Russ will be playing catch me if you can while running for his life which is what Russ seems to enjoy doing, because even on well designed plays he seemed to leave the pocket more than he should have

  3. Marshawn Lynch was the executive chef, but they replaced him with a fast food burger flipper and lost the Superbowl. So there’s that.

  4. So he’s going to run around like a chicken with his head cut off and try to throw bombs to Jerry Jeudy?

  5. Wlll see if Russ can stop the late season fade. He should add 1 extra TD per game over last year’s team. Can you say first place in the AFC West?

  6. Why even have a head coach or OC if the QB determines what happens?
Wilson will be 34. At 5’11”, he needs passing lanes. He is effective outside the pocket. He needs a mobile OL.

You are missing the whole point, see Josh Allen Buffalo Bills and how Brian Daboll tailored the offense to fit Allen’s strengths. Hackett and Lafleur did the same thing for a “washed up” Aaron Rodgers, who just happened to be the MVP of the league during the past 2 years.

  8. It’s been difficult finding a QB. Much easier when you find one who is already a HOFer. Russell seems older than he actually is because he started winning right away.

    Not the MVP!! 😱

Go ahead and give Rodgers the “MVP” every season .. he sucks in the playoffs. See zero TD performance at home against the 49ers.

  10. He supposedly likes to throw it… But when Seattle tried to let him do that more it backfired spectacularly.

  11. Sure why not. NBA-ification complete. Let the inmates run the asylum. Build their own teams, call their own plays, let them look good with wow plays. Really hope this method fails.

  12. It’ll be nice to see an offense run through what it’s qb/skill players do best. Instead of having a grumpy defensive hc who didn’t hide his disdain for offensive players, and an oc who had excellent pieces but tried to force those pieces to do what he wanted to do instead of what they were good at.
Everyone that isn’t a Bronco fan wants to see Wilson fail. Naturally.
As a Bronco fan, I’m excited to see the team actually get some 1st downs and score some points again. Instead of watching Teddy2Gloves throw 3yd passes to rb’s with 4 defenders surrounding them on 3rd and 9.
The AFC West is going to be a tough division.
Should be fun to watch, since every team chasing KC has improved immensely, on paper.
    Go Broncos!

  13. So he’ll be hanging onto the ball far too long and won’t be throwing anything to TE or RB because he can’t see the routes over the middle of the field?

  14. So they will be using the ole Wilson, third down and three, wide open receiver 4 yards down field, and he throws an incomplete pass 50 yards down field to a double covered receiver with almost no chance of catching the ball. All that for maximum contract…..

    Go Hawks

Wilson is a good game manager. Doesn’t make a lot of mistakes but he does have the issue with seeing down the field. Height has it’s advantages in the HFL.

Because good coaches work with their players strengths

  17. I do not claim to be an NFL offensive genius, but doesn’t that philosophy make the Broncos kind of predictable and easier to defend against?

  18. The only team that is ridiculously hanging their hopes on a more washed-up QB is the Colts.
Denver will come in last in the division. Lucky for the Colts, they’ve got Jacksonville to break their fall.

  19. so he’s gonna spend the entire season talking about his “legacy” and how he would like to win 3 more superbowls?

  20. Don’t give Wilson a bad rap. When they went to the SB their Defense was one of the best in the league. The Hawks defense has spiraled. Wilson is not going to put up a lot of points but if you can keep the game close on defense he might be okay. They definitely will need to play to his strengths though.

  21. When the head coach says about Wilson, “Once get to know him, understand him, we’ll build it around him”, it’s either cliche coach speak or he really doesn’t know who Wilson is. Anyone who has seen Wilson play for 10 years knows he needs open lanes to be able to pass the ball, or he has to roll out beyond his blockers. So, nothing is going to change.

  22. I see a lot of Cover 2 coming if they are going to do what Wilson wants – that’s what neutralized him after a strong first 8 games in 2020 and he couldn’t figure it out.

  23. Russell would like to finish higher than last in the division, but that’s not happening.

That’s because Wilson is not your typical 6’4″ tall QB. So yes he cannot see over the lineman. He does have talent though.

  25. What’s that mean? If he’s lucky enough to be losing in the SB, he will hand off?

  26. Gee Jerry Jeudy might even catch 4 TD’S this year and double his career TD total. Denver is going to finish 4th in the AFC West again but at least they can’t blame it on not having a big name QB. (Well in reality they will because Russ at this point in his career is just that, a big name and not much more.)

  27. Denver will be much better on offense with Russ the next two seasons. That’s because until they have to pay his next huge contract, they will be able to pay for an overall quality team. The next Contract/Cap Space will dictate a much different team makeup in the years to come. So for the Broncos’ sake, they better succeed sooner, rather than later.

  28. It’s going to be interesting to see what Hackett can do with Wilson. Wilson, despite having flaws pointed out by others, has performed in what Greg Olsen called a JV offense, with notoriously simple run and pass concepts.

  29. Poor offense lines going to have block longer while Russell hold the ball and dancing around. It’s all about himself in spotlight.

Russell Wilson is a turnover machine

I think you are mistaking him for Zach Wilson
