Two new plaintiffs will join the Brian Flores lawsuit on April 8

On February 1, former Dolphins coach Brian Flores sent the NFL reeling with an unprecedented lawsuit alleging racial bias in the hiring, compensation, and retention of Black head coaches. On April 8, two more coaches will give even more fuel to the landmark litigation.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, two more plaintiffs will officially join the Flores lawsuit when Flores filed an amended complaint on April 8. The identities of the plaintiffs are not yet known (at least not by us).

The plaintiffs will alleging discriminatory bias in their failure to be hired for head-coaching jobs. The claims will include allegations aimed directly at the owners of the teams to be joined as defendants to the lawsuit. The two teams in question aren’t currently named as defendants by Flores, who has since become an assistant coach with the Steelers.

The original lawsuit, a class action filed by Flores, names the Dolphins, Giants, and Broncos as defendants.

To summarize, two more coaches will be added as plaintiffs to the Flores lawsuit in the coming days. And two more teams will be added, but not necessarily teams that hired coaches during the most recently-completed hiring cycle.

UPDATE 8:34 p.m. ET: A prior version of this article explained that the new plaintiffs were denied head-coaching jobs in the most recently competed hiring cycle. We have since been told that’s not necessarily the case.

  1. Accusing someone of a different race of not hiring you because of your race is the definition of racism.

  2. Will the Dolphins organization be put on paid leave because of this pending lawsuit?

  3. The first handfuls of spaghetti haven’t stuck to the wall. Time to grab some more spaghetti and throw it against the wall and see if any of it sticks.

  4. Proving discrimination will take a lot more than simply not being hired as a head coach. Tons of qualified white coaches didn’t get hired for those roles, either. So they need something a lot more specific than just overall percentages or their own job status.

  5. My money is on Eric Bieniemy and Lovie Smith (I know Lovie got a job, but it’s the worst one in pro sports).

Otherwise known as the “Buzbee Method”

  7. The current Vikings ownership hired KAM as their GM and hired Leslie Frazier as a HC. It’s hard to believe that they have a pattern of only hiring white people in positions of power… unlike the Giants

  8. What’s the point of announcing there are 2 unnamed plaintiffs joining the lawsuit? It seems to me that if 2 people decided to join the case they would, just join the case at which point we’ll know their names.

Announcing that 2 people will be joining the lawsuit just seems like a desperate play for attention.

Not if it’s true. You folks are making judgments about the merits of his suit without seeing one shred of evidence. Discovery has not even taken place yet so what are you basing things on – news stories? Others joining the suit after filing is the nature of what happens in class action suits.

No, this plainly isn’t the definition of racism. At all. I sincerely invite you to open up an actual dictionary.

Racism exists. A person who is not at all racist themselves can be a victim of it. They have a right to call it out, regardless of the race of the perpetrator. Doing so is not racism any more than claiming somebody else assaulted you makes your an assaulter. Insisting people are racist simply for claiming they are victims of racism by somebody of another race (which is by far the typical case) very much appears to be a blatant attempt to automatically silence or discredit claims of racism. If not, what else is it?

  11. I would say that Flores lawsuit sent the league reeling is a bit of a stretch. A surprise? Sure. But league isn’t reeling. It’s on Flores to prove something. Talking in the media only sways opinions it doesn’t actually prove right or wrong. This will be a case closed for the NFL. The only thing this may bring is teams disproportionately hiring coaches based on skin color and not talent. Teams would benefit because they get draft compensation or salary cap relief. That’s an unfair advantage for a certain demographic. That would be discrimination and would be the exact thing we’re trying to get rid of correct?

  12. Adam gase was hired twice ..Eric mangini same ..I think that makes Brian Flores’s case

  13. So, Bienemy and who else??

Bienemy is going to be a tough sell. A plethora of off field issues and as an OC he doesn’t call plays. Other than the fact that he has the OC title, what else has he done to show that he is HC material?

  14. Dolphins were the only team in the league with a black GM and coach. Prove discrimination.

  15. My guess would be Marvin Lewis and Eric Bieniemy. The two teams would be possibly Dallas and the Vikings.

  16. Accusing someone of a different race of not hiring you because of your race is the definition of racism.
    =======
Accusing is not racism. Looks like you never experienced racism due to privilege.

  17. so cant the NFL argue that the rooney rule creates a scenario where if you have decided on who you want (and its not a person of color)… you still have to interview a person of color with no intent of hiring them.
    .
that makes racism a bit more difficult to prove i would think…

  18. How can the Dolphins be sued for racism when they have the most diverse front office in the NFL with people of all different races?

  19. Flores may have caught a break by getting hired by the Steelers. The others may be signing their coaching death warrant by getting involved in this. I do think that Eric B, Chiefs OC, has gotten the shaft for several years however. He has been interviewed time after time only to be turned down. I am glad my Steelers won’t be involved in this.

  20. He was hired not for his experience but so he wouldn’t feel alone,Tomlins own words. But thats ok? Sounds like a hypocrite move

The Dolphins actually had one of their best seasons in years and they still canned Flores.

  22. Reminds me of a story I read years ago . A bus carrying 10 people got into an accident . By the time the police arrived there were 20 people on board .

  23. so miamis black GM fired their black head coach (flores) and replaced him with another black head coach but they discriminated against him? and the texans fired their head coach and promoted another black head coach (lovie smith) and they discriminated against flores? in flores mind, that probably makes sense

  24. All the more reason to hire a coach, stick with them through thick and thin until they decide its time to retire.

Flores would have got hired again if the lawsuit did not happen.

Herm Edwards, Dennis Green also got rehired.

    This.

Also, the league is offense-driven and the majority of black HC candidates in the past few cycles are defense first (please don’t bring up Eric B from KC – everyone knows that Andy Reid calls those plays).
The owners will use this, the increase in Black GM’s, Directors, and others being hired, and a hundred other defensible reasons, against any stain of racism. There will be some standard concessions but don’t expect wholesale changes from this lawsuit.

  27. Smells a little like the Watson case. No smoke or fire, so they keep throwing wood on it. Nothing to see here. Stop wasting everybody’s time with these “lawsuits”. Flores has a history of not getting along with people, and Bienemy has a terrible past and should be glad he has a job in the NFL.
