Mike Tomlin is comfortable with the QBs on roster but not opposed to adding to the room

The Steelers haven’t had quarterback uncertainty since drafting Ben Roethlisberger with the 11th overall choice in 2004. Roethlisberger’s retirement has the team back there for the first time in almost two decades.

“I’m really excited by it. I’m energized by it,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. “I love the anxiety associated with uncertainty. I think it brings the best out in me, and I think it’s going to bring the best out in us. At least I’m hopeful that it will.”

The Steelers signed Mitchell Trubisky to a two-year contract, and his 50 career starts has him as the favorite to win the job. Dwayne Haskins and Mason Rudolph remain on the roster, too, and are expected to compete for the job.

The Steelers have not hidden the scouting work they have done on the 2022 draft prospects at the position either.

“I’m comfortable with the talent that we have at the position now, and that’s not saying that I’m not open to add to it as we move forward,” Tomlin said.

The quarterbacks each will get a fair shot at the job with no timetable on naming a starter, Tomlin said.

“We will know when we are there,” Tomlin said.

  1. 3 playoff wins in the past 11 seasons with a Hall of Fame quarterback does not bode well for Tomlin’s future.

  2. I wouldn’t expect comfort here. Being #1 on a depth chart won’t make ANY of those three a “starting” QB. I’d expect URGENCY, not comfort.

  3. Big Ben in his prime was better than the three of them combined. Now we’ll see how good a HC Tomlin is. Just winning their division with any one of them will take a hell of a coaching job.

  4. They won the division two years ago and were only a half game behind the division winner this past year. All that while having a statue at QB who was at the end of his career. I think I’ll wait and see how the season turns out before I bury this team because they don’t have Big Ben anymore.

  5. Steelers always compete for the division. I like that they are going to have some mobility at QB and also a better O line as well as a heck of a talented defense. I like the direction they are moving and I like how they don’t over pay in free agency or make crazy moves to get a qb with lots of baggage.

  6. Tomlin’s love for QB Willis is obvious. Trubisky signing was rea$onable & he is stopgap if they don’t get Willis. Rudolph & Haskins are warm bodies & backups. This team is buckling up for a 6 or 7 win season, at best, but should have a solid solution at QB by 2023.
