Kyle Shanahan: Trey Lance is going to come in and be the best he can be

The 49ers had a wrench thrown into their plan to trade Jimmy Garoppolo when the quarterback had surgery on his throwing shoulder. But it still seems like the club is ready to move on to Trey Lance for the 2022 season.

At the annual league meeting on Tuesday, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan touted Lance’s progress in his rookie season, praising the quarterback’s performance in the team’s Week 17 victory over Houston. Lance threw for 249 yards with a pair of touchdowns and an interception while rushing for 31 yards on eight carries in the 23-7 win.

But with Garoppolo still on the 49ers roster — and likely to remain there until another team is comfortable with Garoppolo’s health after his shoulder surgery — there’s a risk of the 49ers hindering Lance’s development.

Shanahan said it’s San Francisco’s job to make sure that doesn’t happen.

“I think that’s what we work at all the time,” Shanahan said. “I understand the question and the perception, how it’s viewed. But nothing’s going on with his development. Trey’s working his tail off. He knows how I feel about him. He knows our expectations for him. And I think he’s got a lot of respect for Jimmy. But the situation’s clear. We were trying to make a move to add some draft picks and get it back. And I think we were pretty close to it. And then Jimmy ended up getting the surgery, which changes things.

“I think Trey will understand all that. I haven’t talked to him about it, but I think it makes sense to all these guys. Trey’s not an insecure guy. I think the situation makes sense, so there’s nothing sneaky going on about it. And he’s confident. He’s going to come in and focus on playing football, focus on beating however out he has to — whether it’s [Jimmy] or whether it’s Nate [Sudfeld]. He’s going to come in and be the best he can be.”

Shanahan noted he’s been in constant contact with Lance, who is training in Southern California to improve his throwing mechanics in preparation for the offseason program. While Shanahan didn’t name a starter for the 49ers in 2022 — he said he didn’t think he’s ever done that — signs point to Lance receiving plenty of work in OTAs to have every opportunity to claim San Francisco’s starting quarterback job as his own entering training camp.

  1. Seems like kind of modest projections for a guy just a year ago they traded 3 firsts to acquire.

  2. So much has fallen into place for this team, great talent at so many positions, yet they can’t get out of their own way with the QB position.

They pass on Brady, they trade a huge pile of draft capital without even knowing who they’re going to draft before choosing the most raw prospect, and they waffle on a QB who’s gotten them to the playoffs and Super Bowl.

If they’d gone after Brady, or gotten fully behind Garoppolo, or drafted Jones, or spent less draft capital for Lance, they’d be much better off. But they keep finding ways to trip themselves up.

  3. Shanahan/Lynch have been in the NFC Championship 2 times in 3 years. And they have chance again this year. I don’t really understand the people who are criticizing their management of the team. Along the same lines, I can’t understand the idea that Trey Lance is a bust or that they should have drafted Mac Jones. No one knows how Trey is going to turn out, or Mac Jones. Personally I would never ever trade 3 1st round picks for an unproven college QB, but I am not a professional coach who has gotten my team to be playing at a very high level. I also think Mac Jones looks okay, but certainly not one of the top 10 or top 15 QBs in the league. So why spend a 1st round pick on a medium grade QB that you’ll probably want to upgrade in a few years?

  4. Shan and Lynch have really messed up a good situation. Pretty clear those strange pre-draft maneuvers were to get a high pick to trade to the Pack for Rodgers and when it fell through they were stuck trying to sell everybody on ultra raw Trey Lance. Now they have that super-talented team and won’t even go .500 because they are dumping a pretty good QB and starting the raw young guy.

  5. The Niners will be fine. QBs aren’t as fragile and insecure as sports writers.

  6. When you read anything John or Kyle say it all sounds like SPIN (Ie. Less than honest). Kyle’s talked to Lance on the phone! WOW
That will surely give him all he needs to know. NOT. They just hired a guy to be QB Coach, Brian Griese, who has NEVER coached before. You think, maybe, just maybe they would announce Griese is in Orange County with Lance every day getting to know him well and working on improving his mechanics and reads. But no such info so you have a Rookie Coach and basically a Division 3 Rookie QB
who are expected to lead this team back to the Playoffs. Delusional?
