Colin Kaepernick will throw during halftime of Michigan’s spring game

Free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick will serve as the honorary captain for Michigan’s Maize and Bue spring game Saturday. His former NFL coach, UM coach Jim Harbaugh, is doing whatever he can to help Kaepernick get a chance to play in the league again.

To that end, Kaepernick will participate in a throwing exhibition at halftime of the spring game, Angelique Chengelis of the Detroit News reports. The throwing session will be sponsored by a UM student group, Wolverines Against Racism.

Kaepernick will throw to NFL free agent receivers.

Harbaugh was the 49ers’ head coach when they drafted him in 2011, and after Harbaugh benched Alex Smith for Kaepernick in 2012, the 49ers went to the Super Bowl.

He hasn’t played in the NFL since 2016, when he began kneeling during the national anthem.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll has had at least one conversation with Kaepernick this offseason, but those talks have not progressed any further Carroll said this week.

Kaepernick likely has played his final NFL game, but it’s not for a lack of trying.

  1. Here come the comments from people who dislike Kaepernick so much they can’t wait to talk about Kaepernick.

  2. Dare him to kneel during the national anthem. Lets see those convictions.

  3. “He hasn’t played in the NFL since 2016, when he began kneeling during the national anthem. ”

It should say “he hasn’t played in the NFL since 2016, when he led all QBs in fumbles and refused to play unless he was paid top dollar.”

  4. The game has changed a lot in six years, nobody is able to sit out that long and come back to be a significant contributor to a team. Kaepernick was done dirty by the NFL but it is time to move on and use his platform and image to do more important things than try and become a camp arm.

  5. I’d like to see him throw against the Michigam National Guard on defense

  6. He can also sell popcorn and play in the band. He’s still not getting hired by an NFL team

  7. He wants QB 1 money & has refused previous offers for less or prove it deals….. so really it IS from lack of trying!!!
He just seems content on being the poster boy for the victim card…..

  8. I admire Kaep for standing up for what he believes in. There aren’t many people brave enough to do what he did.

I love how the slightest mention of him drives Republicans nuts. He owns them, as you are about to witness in the comments below.

  9. “Kaepernick likely has played his final NFL game, but it’s not for a lack of trying.“

    Completely incorrect.

Kaepernick opted out of his contract. The NFL tried to hold a personal workout for him in November of 2019 ..he cancelled it .. his exact text message to the league office “Sorry, We’re going to go in a different direction.”

Sent by Kaepernicks legal team to NFL attorney Jeff Pash.

  10. Like throw frisbees to one of those Australian Shepards? I love those skits.

  11. Must watch for any football fan. Kapernick will prove he would be a top 3 NFL QB.

  12. He just wants an excuse to be the martyr and blame everyone for not giving him a chance to play.
When all the dust settles it was HIM that opted out of his contract and walked away. He can only blame the person in the mirror.
Now these workouts are nothing but a clown show.

  13. This is precisely why Colin Kaepernick has never been resigned. It is always a publicity stunt with this guy to get his political agenda into the forefront of the news.

  14. Can you imagine Patrick Mahomes getting blackballed because he exposed something that we’d rather keep hidden, and then his fans turning against him and claiming that he actually was a lousy QB? If you’re having trouble imagining that, you’ve missed what’s happened to Kaepernick.

  15. Does he plan to publicly apologize for the pig socks, Castro t-shirt, and revolting rants against Thanksgiving and Independence Day?

  16. If you fear Kaepernick getting to show his skills then it’s all about you.

That would require Mahomes turning into a victim-minded Beta male, which to my understanding is something he is too smart and self-respecting to do.

  18. Of course Kaep really wants to come back now….his $20 million a year contract demands seem like a relative bargain with all that’s taken place this offseason.

The only thing Kaep exposed was that he was pouring after getting benched because of his incredibly poor play on the field

  22. If you fear Kaepernick getting to show his skills then it’s all about you
    —–
He got to show his skills the last 2 years he was in the league. How’d that go?

Personally I’d love to see Kaep get hired. It can only go two ways…he’s a massive flop and loses his martyrdom or he’s a massive success and the NFL looks like crap. Win for me either way cause I can’t stand either of them.

  23. And wearing glasses with a fake mustache and big nose will be a few NFL scouts on the sidelines..

  24. Got to respect the loyalty of Jim Harbaugh. Not fretting about heat from fans on the PFT board, Michigan Boosters, or fans across the nation. He just sees a quarterback who got him to his only Super Bowl and is loyal to that. I wish more people could be loyal to people instead of being worried about offending others.

  25. “He hasn’t played in the NFL since 2016, when he began kneeling during the national anthem. ”

Which is to say, “He hasn’t played in the NFL since 2016, when he lost his starting job to Blaine Gabbert for the second time in 2 seasons. ”

  26. While it’s true Kaepernick “opted out” of his contract, GM John Lynch confirmed that Kaepernick would have been cut because of the existing contract and the direction of the team. When teams with the likes of York at the helm elect to hire new GM’s and HC’s players with contracts from the previous regime rarely survive. And remember this, Tomsula and Kelly his HC’s the last two years he was there, with the notorious Trent Baalke playing GM.

  27. I’m on board with the need for police reform in this country. I am not on board with comparing a job with a MINIMUM salary of $660,000 a year to “slavery”.

  28. He should’ve tried one of the other leagues these last couple of years. If he kills it, and he’s out playing football in football shape, you would get an opportunity. He said he would play in the XFL awhile back, but then said he wants NFL money to do so. I thought of it as we would like to see him play in one of those leagues, but he wants top dollar not based on his talent, but for the whole Kaepernick package like drawing in a crowd and stuff like that. If he cared and loved playing football he would’ve started again from the bottom and worked his way up.

  29. How about Ryan Fitzpatrick and Cam Newton? Both unsigned. I’m sure they would like to have non-stop media advocacy too. Why the double standard?

So, 2 different Coaches with years of experience benched him for Blake Gabbert?….end of story….

  31. Seems strange that he hasn’t made it clear that he would sign for the vet. minimum, just so that he could get a shot….hmmm….

  32. Would love to see him start for the Seahawks this year and average 120 yards passing per game.

  33. He should go play in the CFL. See how he does with live rushers and defenses vs these exhibitions

He won’t do that because he knows he will fail and be exposed

  34. “Kaepernick likely has played his final NFL game, but it’s not for a lack of trying.”

    I actually LOL’ed

  35. No mention of how the Ravens were about to sign him until his master – I mean, girlfriend – called Biscotti a slave owner? Odd how that gets left out of the summary of his path.

  36. Top scouts from the XFL, USFL and Fan Controlled Football league will all be in attendance looking for a backup qb.

  37. Kaepernick is a complete fraud just like Brian Flores and Jussie Smollett. All three lying attention seeking low level human beings bent on using the media for personal gain. The media playing along is why people in this country no longer have any trust in them. Journalism is dead.

  38. I can understand why American patriots are upset over the way he made his protest. We all have to admit that at least he didn’t try to overthrow the government and in the process attack police officers with an actual flag, or anything else. I mean, then we’d really have to hate him as a traitor, right?

Baltimore should sign him. Jackson would sign a contract the next day.

Batimore was going to sign him then his girlfriend called the owner an uncle tom.
Further proof this guy never wanted bnack in the league

  40. Was never a particular fan of him as a QB , I sometimes ask myself if he would have been around now , as we see more mobile passers , and less pocket passers. Perhaps he would have fared better ?.
He was still shafted because of his beliefs , and I think that was shameful.

  41. It will never happen. I guarantee he comes up with an excuse to back out. Dude is like 50 years old. Why we still talkin about him?

I disagree. He was not “shafted because of his beliefs,” the defenses in the NFL adjusted to his running. Once this was done he had to try and rely on his passing abilities, as well as being able to read defenses, which he failed to do. Then, because of his poor play, he was benched for the back up quarterback. That is what actually happened…

The “blame” lies with the 49ers Head Coach hires in Jim Tomsula (who was awful) and Chip Kelly (who is STILL awful).

But go ahead and blame Kaepernick because all he did for the 49ers was to lead them to the Super Bowl in his 2nd year in the NFL and followed that up with an NFC Championship appearance.

    But sure, he’s a “trick” QB…

Newsflash, at any point if he would have signed at his talent and value as a backup…..he could have played long ago.

But he has very carefully kept this perception alive for the sake of his personal brand as a martyr.

  48. Dogs catching frisbees would be more fun. My secret hope is the Lions go watch and then sign him (as if Kaepernick would ever sign a prove it deal) so we can all watch how he does in training camp on Hard Knocks this summer.

Dare him to kneel during the national anthem. Lets see those convictions.
    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

A guy by the name of Monte Poole wrote an article for NBC Sports last September. He explains; The goal of Kaepernick’s actions was to bring systemic racial and ethnic inequality closer to the front of American minds in the hope that such evils will be eradicated.

Very noble, kneeling during the national anthem. That anthem does not speak the truth, for everyone. It’s too militaristic. Our anthem should be America the Beautiful. His actions spotlighted a plea for a more peaceful and just society.

When it comes to taking civil action by using his notoriety, gained as an indirect employee of the NFL, I applaud his passion and commitment. He’s using his God-given talent and soapbox to make a difference. There’s nothing wrong with that, but when it comes to civil engagement he was a rookie, and he made rookie mistakes. No.1-You don’t bite the hand that feeds you.

It was the right message, but the wrong action. It’s like “defund the police.” What is still needed is better long-term training instead of purchasing leftover Swat gear and hiring “gun enthusiasts” straight out of the military as peacekeepers. That’s that’s real message. I agree with that message too. In both cases, right ideas…….wrong actions.

  55. Harbaugh is a joke. So is UofM for letting Harbaugh have his off-season of granduer.

The exact definition of a “one trick qb.” See he had his new “option qb” style. This style was productive for two years. Then NFL defenses adjusted, and his “style” was no longer productive. As I said, “A one Trick QB,” exposed….

I’ll ignore your childish name calling, and address the rest. Blane Gabbert was a first round Bust, that is why he was then a back-up qb. So his “perceived level of skill,” was less than Kap’s was. The problem was what was actually done on the field. Kap’s play was so sub par, he was benched for a washed up back-up…..Pretty simple if you are honest…Jethro…..

  60. 3 wins, 16 losses last 2 years, and has been stated over and over, turned down 2 jobs in the NFL…. oh banned because of kneeling? the commish now demands everyone kneel! so why isn’t he hired?? couldn’t be he just isn’t good enough?????

  62. Kaepernick likely has played his final NFL game, but it’s not for a lack of trying.
    *************************************************************************************
It’s a lack of functioning brain cells that has kept him out of the league.

  63. He needs to give up. He’s a lost cause and beyond rusty.

His old coach is helping a lost cause.

  64. “It should say “he hasn’t played in the NFL since 2016, when he led all QBs in fumbles and refused to play unless he was paid top dollar.””

This comment is inaccurate. In 2016, Carson Palmer and Carson Wentz led the NFL in fumbles with 14 apiece. Sam Bradford, Jameis Winston, and Marcus Mariota had 10 each. Kaepernick was tied with Kirk Cousins, Andy Dalton, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Philip Rivers, Ryan Tannehill, and Dak Prescott at 9 fumbles. These numbers are drawn from Pro Football Reference.

Claims like the one made above rewrite history without even bothering to look it up. We have these statistics recorded. Regardless of how someone feels about Kaepernick, if statistics have to be invented to make an argument, that particular argument isn’t real.

  65. Kap, as has been the case since 2016, is perfectly allowed to go to the CFL and light it up. Or any other football program, for that matter. Yet he never does. Hmmm……why is that? The guy who constantly claims to be in football shape doesn’t really seem to want to play football.

I mean, even Johnny Manziel is actually playing football these days. Think about that.

  66. CK will never play another down in pro football – he gives the APPEARANCE that he wants to, but his martyr act is OVER the day he plays and FAILS. So, he makes it impossible to actually sign him – he wants to start, he wants #1 QB money – NO TEAM will do that and it’s so far from reality that odds are teams won’t bother to even talk to him – negotiations would be too far apart to be fruitful. He wants to start – while a realistic team offer is “we’ll bring you in as a camp arm and see how it goes”.

Somebody, send him some big shoes and a rubber nose – help him complete his proper uniform.

  67. Will there be a defense on the field when he throws? Watching him read and adjust to a defensive look would be a lot more impressive than simply throwing balls to an uncovered receiver. Heck I can do that, but there is more to a QB job than that which is why I am not one, just like a lot of people who are not one. Kaep is not a victim just because he is not an NFL quarterback because he doesnt have it, he should stop the sobbing and join the other millions of us that cant cut it either.

  68. slippery59 says:

Yes, it IS for lack of trying.

    —————————

Actually, I do think he tried. But he just didn’t have the skills to sustain an NFL career. Coaches had an easy time scheming after they had his number and he never learned to adapt his game adfter that. All the guys that had long careers as starters knew how to constantly adjust and adapt through their career. As coaches learned to beat them they had to find new ways to win.

  69. Poke, prod and examine him to see if he can still play in the NFL. He wants to go back to the plantation which plays millions to the poked and prodded.

  70. He made his peace and the world reacted; he cannot accept this. Then throw in he was a onetime wonder teams caught up to his play and he sat the bench. You do not see any x QB come close to getting the attention or publicity this guy does. What would you call that?

  71. Pretty sure he can still throw a football but there is more than just throwing a football to being a successful NFL QB!

  72. Colin Kaepernick would be a great fit for the Buffalo Bills. Kap is a Super Bowl Quarterback whose been to the big game (unlike most of the Bills players and coaching staff).

  73. When I saw this I was “Huh? WHY???” We all know our coach is a little crazy, but this is embarrassing for our university. It merely stirs up all those tired old Kap crap posts again (see above). And for what? Thanks for nothing, coach. How about focusing on beating Michigan STATE this year, and Ohio State again, instead of this sorry publicity stunt to try to help your old, lousy QB. I’ve said this over and over again. I’d give anything to have the OTHER Harbaugh brother coaching Michigan (you know… the Harbaugh who actually WON the Super Bowl, not just coached in it) rather than looney tunes Jim doing silly stuff like this. And people wonder why our alumni is split on him as our coach? Because of crap like this as well as his sorry overall performance against winning teams….

  74. I hear that Tim Tebow will be throwing ayt halftime of Florida’s home opener.
