Rob Gronkowski: I’m not ready to commit to the game of football right now

Last year, tight end Rob Gronkowski elected to re-sign with the Buccaneers on March 22, pushing off a second retirement for at least another season.

It’s a little different in 2022.

With Tampa Bay’s offseason program set to begin next week with a new head coach, Gronkowski has yet to re-up with the club. General Manager Jason Licht has made it clear that Gronkowski is welcome to come back — no surprise with Tom Brady still the team’s QB1. But Gronkowski hasn’t put pen to paper.

In a recent interview with TMZ, Gronkowski said he even avoided catching passes at a charity event over the weekend.

“I knew if I started catching some passes that my head would have started turning, like, ‘Oh, crap, I got to get back out on the field,'” Gronkowski said. “And, right now, I’m not ready to get back out on that field. I’m not ready to commit to the game of football right now.”

While the Bills also reportedly expressed interest in Gronkowski, the tight end is unlikely to go back to the AFC East. He told JC Cornell of The Draft Network that he’s 50/50 on playing in 2022, but if he does, it’ll only be for the Buccaneers.

Gronkowski retired after winning Super Bowl LIII with the Patriots to cap the 2018 season but came out of it once Brady signed with the Buccaneers in 2020. Gronkowski missed five games with a ribs injury in 2021 but still caught 55 passes for 802 yards with six touchdowns. He had 45 receptions for 623 yards with seven TDs in 2020.

  1. Translation: I Hate OTAS and training camp…I’ll see you all in September

  2. Gronk should retire so Brady can send him the bottle of wine he got from Manning.

  3. “Oh crap, I got to get back out on the field.” – That sounds like a man who is coming back.

  4. Robby G doesn’t want (or need) to do a lot of preseason work, so he’ll “decide” later. He’ll be back on the field this fall, and I don’t see him doing it with anybody other than Brady.

  5. Classic veteran skip training camp move I think. He’ll sign with Tampa before September.

  6. Walk away Gronk. You’re set financially, you have many other career options. you’ve won Superbowls and you’re only in your thirties.

  7. Translation: I am waiting for the last of the spring breakers to leave Florida before showing up to camp.

  8. It bad enough having a league full of diva receivers, quarterbacks, and corners. When the tight ends go full-on, I’m out.

  9. He’s not ready cuz the PED’s haven’t cleared his system yet, so until they do he’s not signing any contract. If he’s not under contract there aren’t any drug tests.

  10. Either Gronk or Brady have to ‘man up’ and retire for good . I think it will be Gronk.

  11. I think he missed the boat by not officially retiring this season because a lot of commentary booths became available.

Al Michaels and Rob Gronkowski calling Thursday Night Football would be much better than Herbie.

  12. If Gronk truly loves football, he would be playing for the Bills, trying to win a SB for his home town before his football time is over. Bills would need him to play for the entire season.
But now he just try to work less (no preseason training) and get paid more (through Brady) from the Buccaneers.

    Nailed it

  14. After all the wear and tear he still caught 55 for 800 and blocks like an OT. Friggin guy is the greatest TE ever. Transcends eras.

  15. If he stays healthy, Kyle Pitts could probably eclipse Gronk. He was already in the pro bowl as a rookie. Of course, he needs a decent quarterback, and the Falcons aren’t likely to find someone at Matt Ryan’s level any time soon, much less Brady’s.

  16. He did the same while he was in NE ‘didn’t declare retirement until after the draft or just before, Turned out he was still hurt. I think the same may be happening here. The ribs and other body part are just not strong enough yet

  17. Gronk has been great for the game. But it’s time to say goodbye. Can’t have players running the team, unless they’re rowing in the same direction as the coaches. Gronk might find that he’s ready to go right after training camp ends. This is not a good precedent. Soon, half the starters will be opting out of training camp.

  18. Oh, he’s coming back. He’ll workout with Tommy and maybe come to training camp.

  19. The Rob and Tom show is becoming really tiresome. It’s like having Favre back in the league. Stop the attention seeking , and get on with it.

  20. If he doesn’t come back, that is a significantly less talented Bucs team that Brady is coming back to, considering the other players who left this offseason.

They’ll benefit from a weak NFC, but I’d be surprised if they made a real run this season.

  21. For all of you so tired of hearing about Gronk, Brady, etc you sure do like to comment about how tired you are of hearing about them. It’s almost as if you have, you know, a choice to not read about and comment on the things that you’re supposedly so tired of.

  22. This feels like Brady is bullying him (as well as the Bucs) into forcing him to stay on his ride for the fountain of youth! That’s a narcissistic and selfish venture, at the end of the day! Gronk should retire as he’s been trying to the past 3 seasons and get on with life without Brady!

  23. Taking the summer off followed by a trip to the bank will change his mind. I suppose if I had Gronk’s money, I could afford to turn my nose up at the money he’d earn in the upcoming season. But, I think he’ll play one more season with Brady and they’ll ride off into the sunset together after this year.

  24. Fun fact of the day:

All these QBs have something in common: Alex Smith, Matt Stafford, Mark Sanchez, Nick Foles, Blake Bortles.

They all have a better career passer rating in the playoffs than Tom Brady. 😂😂😂

  25. Gronk has always left the impression that Football is not that important to him his clown persona is scripted.

Who is a better drama queen Rob or Tommy?

Aaron Rodgers has em both beat

  27. Gronk has always reminded me of Ogre in the movie Nerds… you know the big meat head that screams “NEEEERRRRDSSSS!!!!!”… (you’ve seen the meme)

    Beware of Belichick’s castoffs.

Beware of patsfanpatsfan4lifedynasty repeating the same mantra over and over and over again….
