Deebo Samuel sends a social-media message to 49ers

As more and more receivers get paid, others who are due to get paid will expect to get paid. Including one specific receiver who plays the position with the physicality and intensity of a running back. While also playing running back.

49ers receiver Deebo Samuel has removed all traces of the 49ers from his Instagram page.

The move comes at a time when receivers like Davante Adams, Tyreek Hill, and Stefon Diggs have gotten market-value deals, and at a time when there has been no indication that the 49ers will soon be paying Samuel. The 2019 second-round pick became eligible for a new deal after the conclusion of the 2021 regular season.

Samuel became a Pro Bowler and a first-team All Pro during his third season, with 1,405 receiving yards and 365 rushing yards. He averaged 6.2 yards per carry. He scored 14 total touchdowns.

Samuel clearly deserve a significant contract. His dual-role makes him valuable. It also increases the urgency to get a deal done, because it puts him at greater risk of injury.

Complicating matters is the lack of cap space in San Francisco. Via spotrac.com, the 49ers currently have less than $2 million.

Of course, if they were to trade or release quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, they’d instantly pick up another $25 million, instantly. That would come in handy, given that the 49ers need to get new deals done both with Samuel and defensive end Nick Bosa.

  1. Deebo’s awesome. Maybe my favorite receiver. But, pretty soon all the great receivers are all going to playing for last place teams because the smart teams certainly aren’t going to overspending on the most plentiful position, and one of the least significant. Hey, but when your team is losing every game and your team is throwing almost every play, at least you’ll have great individual stats. Repeat after me: The Team. The Team. The Team.

  2. He can’t win this one. Stafford wasn’t considered elite until a few weeks ago. And sorry, but I remember a couple years back when Goff WAS considered elite for his age…

  3. Is he following the Kyler Murray method? He’ll be paid soon enough. Lynch said they’ve budgeted for it.

  4. He needs to force his way out if he doesn’t get a contract by TC. You’d expect Jimmy G won’t be in the roster so the money will be there.

San Fran could stand to gain quite a bit of much needed draft capital if they do trade Deebo.

Not that getting rid of a 4th year mega talent is usually a great idea but for a team with little cap space and no first round picks over three years minus the addition of Trey Lance, the roster could use some transforming.

Trent Williams is aging and won’t be a factor long term for a Lance lead Niners team. Sucks to think about moving an elite LT but it’s better than a stud WR 7 years his junior.

If I’m the Niners I’m probably looking to offload someone other than Samuel. The roster is very top heavy with top tier talent. Williams, Samuel, Kittle and Bosa are all playing at the pinnacle of their respective positions. Bosa should be in the top 3 highest paid defenders in the NFL. That has to be something to consider for SF long term. He’d command a massive, possibly record breaking haul for a defensive player in a trade.

Obviously everything centers around Lance and Garoppolo but SF needs to shake things up a bit.

  5. Cannot blame the man, right now the market is HOT. If the Bills just paid Diggs, then the writing is on the wall for a double threat be paid!!!!!!

  6. Trade him for a Tyreek Hill style haul. He is bound to get injured soon the way he plays

  7. Deebo knows the QB position is below average and they will overuse him again. This guy was literally limping off of the field after every play in their last playoff game.

  8. Charliecharger…. Do you watch the 49ers? I’m really asking, because you describe Deebo like he plays WR . He’s so much more than just run out and catch,… he’s the running back as well. The team the team the team…. Yeah right… Deebo was the offense the offense the offense that propelled them
    In the playoffs.

  9. I’m all for players getting paid, but in 19’ he went for 57-802-3 in 15 games and in 20’ he went for 33-391-1 in 7 games. Talent his there, but he isn’t top tier yet like Adams, Diggs, and Hill who have consistently been great.

That’s what some people said, but the football people I talked to always maintained Stafford was an elite QB. But these are guys that watch tape. So they could see it with their eyes. Most of us see with our ear. Big difference.

  11. So this is how “professional” athletes express their displeasure? They un-friend the team? And just when I thought the mind of a spoiled, entitled, bratty player couldn’t devolve any lower…guys like Kyler Murray and Deebo Samuel break out their shovels and dig even lower. Unfriending…what a joke.

  12. Difference between him and Diggs is that Diggs has proven he can play over multiple years with multiple QBs. Deebo had a monster year last year but it was one year.

Let him wait til after year 4.

    ———————————————————————————-

If I were Samuel and the 49ers tried that they needn’t bother with an offer after year 4. After how well he’s played, if they team makes him sweat it out and risk losing tens of millions if he’s injured, I’d invite them to go…….looking elsewhere for a replacement.

  14. Maybe Deebo will be playing his home games at a stadium featuring an Arrowhead. Anything can and will happen this off season .

  15. Five year contracts really 4 years, then those have become 3 before players want to renegotiate and in a couple years player will all be crying after 2 years in their contract for more money. Go get and get a real job if you are so unhappy with your multi million dollar contract. Many people are struggling to make ends meet and these players and owners who live in a separate world are always bitching about their multi million dollar per year issues. Seems like we are always talking about money in sports nowadays.

  16. I wonder how many teams are just gonna trade their star WRs rather than pay them tier II QB money. I think the only saving grace will be the new TV contract induced cap increases.

  17. Crap or get off the pot. Garapolo has got to go or Samuel or Bosa. I doubt that they can keep all three.

  18. This social media trend is so dumb unfollow whenever u get u get upset about literally anything

  19. He needs to demand 30 mill a year range with the numbers he put up even with that SF QB mess.

  20. Double threat = double the chance to get injured. 49ers should let this play out.

  21. I have to say I think these guys are worth every penny, but they’re gonna price themselves out of the league or right onto terrible teams because rookies are gonna come in and take over. For every Tyreke Hill or Davante Adams there’s a Jamar Chase or Jaylen Waddle.

And he was average until last year. You do not pay anyone based off of one year of production. If anything let someone else make the mistake and get some picks for him. Most likely he will revert back next year now that teams have more of a handle on what Kyle is doing with him in the offense. He is not that great of a WR as it is without the added use which will be dialed back this year.

  23. Deebo as a dynamic dual threat playmaker is more deserving of $25m/yr than Diggs.

Wouldn’t be surprised if the Niners threw DS into some wildcat options and then eventually decide he’s replacing Trey at QB. LOL.

Deebo, DK, those guys are the future at WR for real.

  24. He knows his numbers will go down once Lance becomes the starter-he needs to get paid now.

  25. I love Deebo, but if he’s expecting that big of a payday, then we better trade him now while he’s hot and get that big Tyreek hill trade type of return..
