Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has released a statement on the sudden and shocking death of quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who was hit by a car and killed this morning in Florida.

“I am devastated and at a loss for words with the unfortunate passing of Dwayne Haskins,” Tomlin said. “He quickly became part of our Steelers family upon his arrival in Pittsburgh and was one of our hardest workers, both on the field and in our community. Dwayne was a great teammate, but even more so a tremendous friend to so many. I am truly heartbroken. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Kalabrya, and his entire family during this difficult time.”

Haskins was in Florida with several teammates, where the Steelers’ skill position players had been working out together before the official start of the team’s offseason program.

The Steelers signed Haskins last year and he spent the season on their roster after previously being a first-round draft pick in Washington and a star quarterback at Ohio State.

  1. I don’t know if he’d ever have become a quality NFL starter. But by all accounts he was becoming an outstanding young man involved in his community which is far more important. My condolences to his family and friends.

  2. RIP Dwayne! I was pulling for you to win the starting job in Pittsburgh. As a father my heart is broken. I will hug my children as often as I can. This hits home hard.

  3. Dwayne Haskins death is a total tragedy. What are the details of the story, was somebody driving drunk? Was he an innocent bystander standing on a sidewalk?

  4. Man this is sad. My heart goes out to his family, friends and the Steelers organization.

Schefter has some early details. I wont post them, but I am sure you can easily find them.

RIP Dwayne Haskins. Way too young.

  6. Huge tragedy. Whether he had made his place in the NFL or not, he had plenty of life to live.

  7. Truly tragic loss of life. My sister is a Buckeyes alum, so I hear about OSU stars all the time. With Ben retiring, Haskins had a genuine shot at restarting his career with the Steelers.

Florida State Police have confirmed it wasn’t a car… it was a dump truck. Hopefully Haskins never knew what hit him 🙁

  8. This is some shocking news. So sad to hear of his tragic loss.
Taken away much too young, with so much left to accomplish.
Thoughts and prayers to his family and all who knew and loved him.
Rest in Peace Dwayne Haskins. God bless.
