DeVante Parker: I chose to get traded to New England

In the NFL, it’s rare for one team to trade a potential impact player to a division rival.

But that’s exactly what happened when the Dolphins agreed to send receiver DeVante Parker to the Patriots.

Miami selected Parker in the first round of the 2015 draft and he’d been productive for the franchise. But when the Dolphins acquired Tyreek Hill from the Chiefs, Parker became available.

The receiver told New England media on Thursday that he wanted to play for the Patriots when the possibility was presented to him.

I chose to get traded here,” Parker said, via ESPN. “My agent [Jimmy Gould] hit me up, just telling me what the situation was, and the options I had for the teams to go to. The first on my list was the Patriots. I’m just excited we were able to get everything done.”

Parker is expected to become one of quarterback Mac Jones‘ primary targets. After working out with the quarterback in Florida following the trade, Parker said Jones has a “nice arm on him.”

In 2021, Parker caught 40 passes for 515 yards with a pair of touchdowns in 10 games with eight starts. The Patriots’ leading receiver was Jakobi Meyers, who caught 83 passes for 866 yards with two TDs.

  1. You need pin point accuracy when throwing to Parker. He can’t separate however he’s tremendous at shielding off defenders and using his body to like a power forward.

I doubt anyone in the league is better at high pointing a jump ball than he is.

He’s a straight line runner though. Very little after the catch and no lateral shiftiness.

But back shoulder throws, good luck stopping him.

  2. Let’s hope he turns out to be as good a WR acquisition from the Fins as Welker and Amendola did. I remember when the Patriots got Amendola I was dubious because of his injury history and he did have some issues in his first couple of years, but after that he was way more available. Maybe Parker will be as well.

  3. Good for him. Parker was always a standup guy and wishing him nothing but the best (except when playing the Fins). 🙂

  4. I know this is a big statement but I feel this could remind us of the last trade for a WR between these two teams, where the Pats netted Wes Welker for a 2nd (I believe).

  5. Does he know that Brady is not there anymore……….

Belichick will never win another SB

  6. I highly doubt it was solely your choice that you were traded to the Patties. Teams only trade players within their division after they have exhausted all other options. Prepare to disappear this season — just like Nelson Agholor did last season. With pathetic Mac at quarterback, New England has become the place where receivers careers go to die.

  7. The Dolphin’s #3 reciever becomes the #1 receiver in NE, let that sink in for a minute.

He was their #1 WR heading into 2021. There’s nothing to “sink in”. Ryan Fitzpatrick is a better QB than Tua. Parker knew Tua needed RPOs to function, which means Tua has no other gear. So, Parker becomes a convenient scapegoat during Ross’s cheating and funny business in Miami.

    NE doesn’t “rank” WRs either.

Brown, Patten, Givens, Branch, Amendola, Hogan, LaFell, Mitchell, etc. The list goes on and on and on.

NE doesn’t field a team to cater to fantasy stats or Madden ratings. They never have and never will.

It’s hilarious how this concept goes right over your head. You people, including some obnoxiously entitled Pats fans, don’t even get it, yet BB set it up for 20 years and 2 dynasties.

Brady was not a star from 2001-2004.

Actually, No.4 WR, and 5th WRing target if you include Gesicki.

The horrifying part of New England is that they lost JC Jackson and Miami added Tyreek Hill. Seriously, what are they going to do?

Miami has already beaten New England 4 of the last 5 and 3 in a row.

Lmaoooo. This guys running his mouth in April.

  11. Says Mac has a nice arm ,what’s that say about Tua ?
Also a guy that can’t separate now is closing in on the dreaded 30 and has rarely been healthy…This should go well.

  12. With Parker, Bourne, Agholor, Meyers, a draft pick(they need a slot guy. That’s not Meyers) and Henry at TE, I really think the receiver corps looks OK. I’m optimistic Bourne and Agholor will be better their 2nd year in the system. Parker was hurt a lot, but it’s not like it was structural stuff. It was pulled hammies, quads and stuff, mostly. Maybe the Pats training staff can do a better job. It’s funny how Miami fans thought Parker was they greatest thing ever when he torched Gilmore, but now he’s hurt all the time and can’t get open. Strange how that works.

  13. Parker will play like it’s a contract year; he’ll probably put up 1000 yards this season. He is a good upgrade over N’Keal Harry. I wish Parker the best, with his new team and new start.

He comes with a #2 WR salary; I think the Patriots got a bargain.

  14. You guys know he got hurt while talking to the media. At least that’s what would happen in Miami

Amendola played for NE before Miami, not the other way around.

  16. It worked out great for both parties. Parker got to go where he wanted and Miami got the best offer from NE for him.

  17. A rubber arm throwing to a glass body. Have the medics ready. Pats in 4 th place this season.

  18. Belichick has never valued WR’s too highly outside of the Moss acquisition.

Is Parker really their #1 now? Jones is going to have worse protection this year and roughly the same level of receiving corps.

Actually that collection of receivers, as a whole,is bottom 3rd of the NFL. Also, Parker IS always hurt & can only be called a bust for the Dolphins, due to his lack of production in his career to this point. No real fan ever thought “Parker was the greatest thing ever”, ever. The Pats don’t have a deep threat or an alpha WR currently on the roster.

  20. Jones is going to have worse protection this year and roughly the same level of receiving corps.

    How is protecting worse?
He has the same two tackles and the same center
Guards are a dime a dozen.
NE had guys playing guard who never played that position
The last thing I would worry about unless there are a lot of injuries on the line is the play of the offensive line.

  21. mumfio says: The Pats don’t have a deep threat or an alpha WR currently on the roster.

The Pats don’t want or need a diva WR on the team.

  22. Agholor is the Pats deep threat. In 2020 he was 2nd in the NFL in catch average. They don’t have an Alpha WR? So what? You don’t need that if you have 3/4 open guys. Pats WRS in the bottom 3rd? MJones has the 13th most passing yrds in the NFL last year. Without DParker. Aren’t stats and facts fun?

  23. Sign of good things to come when a veteran receiver chooses to play with a young QB. Players see the potential in Mac Jones to take that next step and want to go along for the ride.

Bottom 3rd? How is one of the best on paper in the conference bottom 3rd? I can name easily 15 teams that don’t have 2 800 yard receivers from last year alone.

    yeah Amendola was a Ram

  26. Don’t let the door hit you on the derriere on the way out. You should have been released a few years ago. The nerve of him saying HE chose the team to go to. Jeesh, excuse me mr porcelain, you were never to be relied upon. But ya gotta go!!

  27. Whiplas013,

Welker and Amedola would be 2nd tier playmakers at best without Brady, just like the current WR in Patriots.

All of such receivers depend on QB’s ability of seeing soft spots quickly or in advance.

For example, the reason Edelman was able to reach the ball before two Falcons defenders was because of the time Brady threw the ball. (Funny, someone equate what I said to denying Edelman made unbelievable catch).

Apologies. The memory ain’t what it used to be, and I fired off the comment without checking.

  29. 800 yards is less than 50 a game. I’m todays nfl that’s absolute garbage.

  30. “He was their #1 WR heading into 2021.”

That’s not true either. Waddle was our #1

Belichick will never win another SB
    ——
Probably not since SBs are hard to win.

But it will be so nice to cheer for a QB who has legit talent and won’t need to cheat to be good. It’s been a very long time since the Patriots had one of those.

  32. Belichick win never win another SB
    ++++++++

Lol of his his believers are still holding their breath.

Can’t wait to see their faces if he doesn’t even win a division title again or he is fired by Kraft. It must be quite funny.

  33. Brady is a nice little system QB with a little arm who became “great” from cheating and having a great team and coach to make him look better than he always was.

Nothing more or less than that. Period.

  34. How Pats will be like under Belichick in next couple of years is not under Belichick believers control.

Meaning, no one can stop that Belichick will be fully exposed as a garbage.
