Deebo Samuel continues to be intent on leaving the 49ers

The weekend has seen multiple examples of social-media contentions regarding 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel‘s intention to leave the team. Some of the claims have yet to be verified, including a supposed text-message exchange with Seahawks safety Jamal Adams, who if the back-and-forth is legitimate signs all of his text messages with “#prez.”

A video making the rounds shows the inside of a crowded night club. A large sign being carried through the club declares, “Deebo is staying #49ers.” The camera then pivots to Samuel, who smiles and passes his fingers under his chin, sending a clear message that he disagrees with the message on the sign.

Wherever it goes from here, it’s amazing it’s come to this. While we still don’t know the precise reason(s) for Samuel’s trade request, the fact that it’s gotten to this point counts as a failure, at some level, by the team. Unless the sole reason is he doesn’t want to be in San Francisco, the 49ers could have said or done something to keep the relationship from disintegrating to this point. And even if it’s as simple as Deebo not wanting to live and work in California and nothing more, his decision to disclose his desire to seek a trade suggests that there’s a level of animosity that shouldn’t exist between an NFL team and such an important player.

It’s still unknown what the 49ers are doing in an effort defuse the situation, if anything. It’s unknown whether they will trade him. The fact that multiple other receivers have gotten what they wanted in recent years (starting with Stefon Diggs tweeting his way out of Minnesota and continuing with the recent trades of Devante Adams and Tyreek Hill) creates a natural expectation that other players will get when they want, when they want it.

That’s the question that needs to be answered. Will the 49ers take an old-school, play-for-us-or-play-for-no-one approach to Samuel, or will they accommodate his request? Some sort of clarity necessarily is coming this week.

  1. With no one saying anything, everything becomes speculation. It might be as simple as Samuel not wanting to tie future earning potential to the performance of the next quarterback in San Francisco, whoever that might be.

  2. I’m a Deebo fan so it sucks watching it play out like this, but I’m a Niners fan first, player second, so if he doesn’t want to play here then trade him for a good deal. A lot of people forget that Deebo was almost considered a bust until this year. I get it from both sides, but at this point, he would be more of a distraction since he’s doesn’t want to be there, apparently. Cut your losses and move on. Aiyuk has better hands anyways.

  3. He’s ok, he doesn’t have the size. If he was 6’4 a lot of teams would show interest. He’s like a now days Golden Tate.

  4. We’ll find out by the end of the draft – so we’ll know this time next week. The team’s best trade option seems to be the NJ Jets 10th pick in round one plus another two picks or perhaps one more pick and a player from their team. Getting three players for one also helps the 49ers avoid another Kinlaw/Buckner outcome. Otherwise we wait and hope everyone calms down by training camp and something eventually gets done.

  5. His resume doesn’t mirror Diggs, Adams or Hill.

Plus we could see him wear down in the PO in his dual threat role.

Hold onto him, and if he acts up, fine him. Hold on to him until you get what you want in return. If he so chooses, he can go the LeVeon Bell route.

  6. You’re not getting the 19th pick, never-mind the 10th and two more picks. Not even the Jets are that foolish.

  7. I don’t know of anyone who hates the 49ers more than I do, but I’m hoping that they’ll play hardball with him and refuse to trade him and fine him every day that he doesn’t show up for work. But IF they do trade him, I hope that it’s to the Lions or Jets, teams who never truly amount to anything in the modern era.

  8. It’s really a diva behavior. He has a very good relationship with shanahan. If he hasn’t been able to calm this situation I’d have to conclude he’s just being a diva.
Shanahan has a lot to do with how well Deebo has played (not to take anything away fro Deebo and what he’s accomplished)

  9. I WAS a Huge Deebo guy before this because it was always about team. Now? Take your show somewhere else. The Niners have had some of the best WRs is history (Rice and both Owens) … take your prone to injury self somewhere else. Clown.

  10. This young man has lit the Golden Gate Bridge on fire and there is no going back. 49er’s should pack his bags and take all the picks they can get and move on. He is a great talent but an even greater distraction to the team and the fan base.

  11. Like with Diggs the team doing the trading was better off. Jefferson is younger and better. 49ers could do the same.

  12. He isn’t much if not used like he was last year. Hence no big payday. Too stupid to realize it

  13. OBJ has paved the way! I expect you are going to see a lot more of this from unhappy ballers in the future.

  14. Anyone that signs every text message with that tells you everything you need to know about who he is as a person.

  15. Diggs, Adams and Hill had all done a lot more than Samuel has done when they pushed for a trade.

Send him to a crappy team and be done with it.

Like the Seahawks did with Russ

  17. Of course he’s going to shake his head and say no. He’s in the middle of a contract negotiation. If he supported the sign. He’d lose his power play.

    Deebo isn’t going anywhere

Although it never hurts to ask….I think that those are some lofty trade requirements for a Player with one good season under his belt. Especially when the player will be demanding a ridiculous new contract to go along with the trade…..

All of that, and he is only 5 foot eleven with hamstring injuries dating back to his freshman year in college….this trade just keeps sounding better and better!….smh….

  20. Whatever the reason (or reasons) for Deebo wanting to leave the Niners (whether it is just an insistence on being the highest paid non-QB) or something else, the way he’s handled this is childish and selfish.

  21. Dude is Cordarrelle Patterson. He won’t be anything special on a team that uses him as a WR.

  22. Good player no doubt. How much is a team really gonna pony up for him? I know his stats and all that, but these styles never seem to last long. I wouldn’t overpay in draft picks then pay whatever salary he wants. Most of us would love him on our team. But…..

  23. Too much of this with today’s athletes. It all goes back to how they are being raised and the failures of the parents, sports and community to teach these kids how to deal with adversity. Ok get traded to the Jets. Their QB might turn out to be god but what if he is a bust? You want to be in the NY market on a lousy team?

Speaking of calming down, the # 10 pick, plus another 2 picks and or players????
Now I know why he wants out of San Fran, everybody is high.

  25. Not a Packer fan but the only team that makes sense is Green Bay because Rogers window is closing and Adams left. Maybe Cleveland…just not sure these teams can afford what Debo will want.

    ____

Only Golden Tate didn’t have near the skill set that Deebo has, not even close. Tate was the most over hyped and overrated WR in the past 20 years.

That’s nonsense, nobody ever considered Deebo a bust, he produced from his rookie year forward. The concern for Deebo was durability, not potential bust status. Aiyuk was the one who people thought might be a bust last year before he started to produce again at the end of the season. If their offense looks like it did in the Houston game, with nothing nothing nothing until Lance runs around in circles before throwing a bomb, a la Russ in Seattle, then they don’t need Deebo, they need guys like Aiyuk who are better suited to go deep and play scramble drill, like Tyler Lockett does for Russ.

  28. He just wants the payday that he thinks he’s due, AND get on a team without a huge question mark at QB. Not really surprising or hard to understand.

  29. A shame man. You know, the reality is that these fellas who force their way out of a situation, don’t necessarily do well at their next stop. Let the buyer beware with Deebo. Him looking a gift horse in the mouth like that is disrespectful. He’d be a midling #2 WR entering the 4th and final year year of his rookie contract, looking at signing for utility player money on his next deal if Shanahan hadn’t found a creative way to use him. Get what you can for him and go find another in the draft John Lynch, in what looks to be a fairly deep WR class. Dont let the door hit ya where the lord split ya Deebo!!! Adios!

  30. I always find it funny how much hate everybody throws at somebody when he is simply just trying to do what is in his best interest. Can’t blame the guy for wanting to strike while the iron is hot (a bunch of other WRs getting recording setting money). Plus his value is at the highest it will probably ever be after the year he just had. Why shouldn’t he get paid top dollar? Nobody ever talks about how teams will use players for all they are worth and spit them out just as quickly by cutting/trading them. But man oh man let’s crush a player who wants to get paid smh

  31. I could see SF trading Deebo and a 7th-round pick to the Jets for the 10th pick, a second-round pick in this year’s draft, and a third and 6th in next year’s draft.

Teams could sign him to a contract extension, which wouldn’t kick in until his rookie contract was fulfilled. To expect Deebo to average 18 yards an attempt is crazy. Just like Nelson Agholor. He averaged 18 yards an attempt in his one season with the Raiders. Then he went back down to his median career stats.

  33. The Jets are not giving up the 10th pick for a WR who wants to be the highest paid at his position. Just stop already.

  34. It’s amazing that players get drafted from places all across the country from where they grew up and when they get towards the end of their contract that they were drafted into and want to go play somewhere else, we as fans pass judgement on them and view them as selfish etc. Maybe he really just doesn’t like California. Maybe he wants to go home and play. Who knows. He’s making millions playing football. Let the man be happy without all the criticism. Contractually speaking I’m sure he’s fine.

  35. At this point the fanbase is fatigued. I would make the trade and find a way to draft Garrett Wilson in the first round and Zamir White in the later rounds to play Deebo’s wide back role with 7-10 strong carries a game. Zamir White will be perfect in that role.

  36. Nothing worse than a talented player that doesn’t want to play to his strength. Take what you can get a send him Packing. LOL

  37. More RB than top flight WR. Whoever pays him big money like he’s a prime time WR is going to be sorry.

  38. Deebo will be missed, but the Niners will get a lot for him and in the long run are better off not having to pay a receiver $25+ million.

  39. I think if they do trade him a realistic trade outcome would be something like a 2nd round or two 3rds…hes only had 1 breakout season & if u take away the gadget plays and a defense paying attention to george kittle samuel Is a 40-60 catch a season guy…and that’s what he wants right no more gadget plays. Very talented but he hasnt proved it yet in multiple seasons that hes a #1

  40. Samuel could come to the browns lol we have 2 of the best running backs dont think hed need to line up in the backfield

  41. This has sort of become a problem. These guys get drafted high based on potential and now they expect to get paid high because of potential a couple years down the road. Kyler murray is the poster child of this & deebo seeing what hes doing..cant say I like the scrub your social media tactics
