Hollywood Brown asked to be traded at the end of the 2021 season

The trade that sent receiver Marquis “Hollywood” Brown from the Ravens to the Cardinals came out of the blue. In Baltimore, it was a long time coming.

Via Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com, G.M. Eric DeCosta told reporters after the conclusion of round one that Brown asked to be traded at the end of the 2021 season.

DeCosta described it as a “complicated topic.”

“It’s something I anguished over for a long time,” DeCosta added.

In November 2020, Brown complained about his role with the Ravens. In an offense premised on the run, receivers who want to catch passes may feel a little marginalized and underutilized.

Brown nevertheless had his first and only 1,000-yard season in 2021, catching 91 passes in 16 games. He was targeted 146 times.

In Arizona, that surely will change — in a good way. We’ll address that in a separate post.

  1. Apparently people aren’t joking when they say Baltimore receivers get tired of being asked to block all the time.

  2. …which makes Jackson’s reaction make even less sense. Did he not even know the feelings of his own receiver?

His WR wants out, and he complains about the team drafting protection for him after an injury-riddled season.

I think Jackson is moving from “unusual” to “downright eccentric” tonight…

  3. Ravens fans and the media can stay on the Lamar Hype Train but what really matters is being clearly and definitively stated by WRs wanting to leave Baltimore and the utter lack of any decent, let alone good, WR who actually wants to come to Balto and play. There isn’t a QB in Baltimore. There is a highly athletic dude who can scramble, but any good WR knows he’ll never get the ball and put up any stats with Lamar throwing to him.

  4. Steve keim thinks he’s outsmarting everyone. His first round draft record has been abysmal….to say the least. So he’s afraid of the scrutiny. He traded away his first round pick for another smallish speed receiver when you have Rondale Moore and Andy Isabella. The hardest thing to do Is to project (scout) what college players will
Be as pros. But that’s what you get paid to do. Keim. Is. Horrible.

  5. He’s not that good. And he’s not moving to a much friendlier QB situation. Sorry to break the news, but it’s not getting any better from here, Hollywood.

  6. Arizonas offense is loaded now from top to bottom just dripping with talent. AZ should have problem posting a top 3-5 offense next season. With a second rd pick and two third round picks to spend tmrw now they just need to draft a RB to pair with Dual threat RB James Connor such as Bamas Brian Robinson or FL’s Dameon Pierce. AZs offense is going to be hard to stop in 2022, no DC is going to want the task of game planning against that offense with so many weapons n the ability to hurt defenses in so many different ways.

  7. This is why BB doesn’t waste his time with these running QBs.

New England is a place where great wide receivers can come and flourish.

  8. Who can blame Brown? I’m surprised the Ravens aren’t designing the Single Wing or Wishbone offense for the 19 RBs they plan to have on their roster. Who needs an expensive WR when your QB can’t throw the 30 yd out pattern?

  9. Either Jackson is about to get paid and siphon all of the money up, or the Ravens are gearing up for life without Jackson and making a philosophy adjustment.

  10. Good trade for the Ravens. Brown had a lot of drops and it wasn’t clear they would extend him after next season. They get a starting center which was a large need. DeCosta continuing the draft wizardry.

  11. I’ll give them credit that he handled his business behind the scenes unlike these other diva wide receivers. And on a personal level who could blame him not wanting to catch passes from LaMar

  12. There’s not a more frustrated position group in the NFL than the wide receiver room in Baltimore.

  13. I’m still on the fence with Kyle. Considering he was injured last year, though, the Cardinals seemed to nose-dive the latter part of the season and his playoff game was abysmal. Has the rest of the league’s DCs figured him out?

You don’t have to like Lamar, that is your right, but please don’t make stuff up. WRs have no problem playing with Lamar. Before Lamar got hurt last season Hollywood was on pace to be top 5 in receiving yards with well over 100 receptions. Even with Lamar missing a qtr of the season, Hollywood had over 1000 yds and 91 receptions, and thats with one of the best TEs in the league sharing the load with him. Bottom line is Hollywood doesn’t like the scheme Greg Roman runs. He felt it didn’t utilize his skillset to it’s full potential. He has no problem with Lamar who by the way is his best friend. Hollywood was inconsistent and wasn’t going to get #1 WR money from them anyway. It was time for him to move on. A lot of local media personalities in Baltimore believe that Hollywood leaving will help both of them grow as Lamar won’t stare down his friend who struggles to get off press coverage, and Hollywood can be in a more receiver friendly offense that’s a little more creative in their utilization of WRs.

Brown did not have a lot of drops. In 146 targets Hollywood Brown had just 7 drops last season, the year before he had just 5 drops. And Brown has also had 21TDs in his first 3 seasons w/ 6 last season on top of 91 recs for 1000+ YDs.
With a much better elite passer throwing to Brown & Brown going to a pass heavy offense his stats are about to skyrocket in 2022 esp with one of the NFLs best top 3 WRs in DeAndre Hopkins drawing all the coverage. Brown will have no issue catching 95+recs/1400+YDs 8-10TDs in AZ. Brown is an elite talent at WR and along w/ Hopkins gives AZ two #1 caliber WRs.

  16. They took a receiver in the first round last year. Everyone should have seen the writing on the wall then. When they draft someone at your same position who will have to get paid if he performs well, it doesn’t make any sense to believe you’re in the long-term plans. No different from Dallas and what happened with Cooper after they drafted Lamb.

  17. Brown will never get the chance at a big payday playing in Baltimore with Jackson as his qb. This is a much better situation for him. Will he turn into an elite player? Probably not but at least he has a fighting chance in az.
