Jon Robinon: Titans didn’t consult with Ryan Tannehill before drafting Malik Willis

Ryan Tannehill may be drinking some tequila tonight.

Titans G.M. Jon Robinson told reporters on Friday night that the team did not consult with their current starting quarterback before trading up to select quarterback Malik Willis in round three of the 2022 NFL draft.

Willis, regarded by many as a first-round prospect, slid through the first two rounds and into round three.

Tannehill didn’t show up for the start of the voluntary offseason program as he enters the penultimate season of a four-year contract with the Titans. While the cap consequences protected him against the team moving on in 2022, it gets much easier to move in a different direction for 2023.

A top-10 pick of the Dolphins in 2012, Tannehill arrived in Tennessee three years ago, when Marcus Mariota was the entrenched starter. The Titans eventually benched Mariota for Tannehill, who became the comeback player of the year.

After three interceptions in a playoff loss by the top-seeded Titans to the Bengals, Tannehill became a magnet for criticism. The Titans circled the wagons, but questions have lingered regarding his future with the team. With Willis now on the roster, those questions won’t go away.

Nothing the Titans say will change that, especially since the Titans spent so much time in recent weeks insisting that receiver A.J. Brown wouldn’t be traded.

Brown was, and Tannehill’s status necessarily becomes uncertain. While he undoubtedly will be the guy for now, Willis will have a chance to become the heir to Tannehill, if the Titans decide to move on after the coming season.

Whether Willis develops becomes the wild card in this equation. His overall status and desirability fell into question as he slid through pick after pick. The Titans saw enough to trade up and get him. Now, in a business that is premised heavily if not completely on results, Tannhill will have to show that he can generate the kind of performance that prompts the Titans to keep Willis on the back burner, indefinitely.

Tannehill will have to do it with a new-look receiving corps, headlined by Robert Woods (acquired from the Rams) and Treylon Burks, a first-rounder who will be expected to step right in and replace A.J. Brown.

  1. Willis is a late 3rd rounder… I’m sure Ryan knows he has little to be concerned about!

  2. Not that I have an opinion one way or the other on Tannehill, but that’s saying something if you’re sweating bullets over a third round pick

  3. Why would they? Tannehill has been serviceable, but with no WRs left on this roster and how strong the AFC is, they know it’s time to look to the future. Because D Henry isn’t going to last forever. Not with how they treat him.

  4. Kyle Trask and Kellon Mond were a 2nd round pick and 3rd round pick last year. Neither are the QB of the future. Brady retired and Track was never seen a replacement despite the 2nd round pick. Malik Willis is going to have to earn a spot just like Davis Mills and Russell Wilson did. He’s not going to get the Jordan Love or Trey Lance treatment and be anointed the heir apparent to the starting QB. There is a huge difference between a quarterback taken in round 1 and a quarterback taken anywhere else.

  5. As a Dolphins fan, it pains me to see Tannehill go through this. But I feel like he never truly developed as a QB. Part of development is assessing yourself, and I don’t think he truly ever wanted to be a great QB. He was a WR most of his life, so maybe that had something to do with development over the long term. Also being drafted by your College Coach adds more pressure.

  6. Seems like Titans in good spot since Tannehill makes way more than he deserves & they can slid a guy under a 3rd Rd cap figure in there, maybe as soon as this yr. Smart no-risk move by Titans. If Tannehill has his boxers in a bunch as a result, so what?

  7. Why on earth would they have to ask him? None of his business who they draft just like Aaron Rodgers.

  8. RT17 will be the starter this year and have a great season IMO
I think he had a damn good season last year, sure he had a bad playoff game but in all reality the Titans would not of been even playing in that game if it weren’t for him.
Atleast he isn’t a diva and requesting a trade after they drafted Willis.

  9. This situation mirrors that of the Green Bay Packers with Jordan Love exactly. Now we all get to contrast and compare how another QB handles this situation.

  10. Ryan Tannehill will be 34 when the season starts.
The knock on Malik Willis was that he ran a very unsophisticated offence even for college. He won’t be ready to start for the Titans this year or likely even the next. Which means by the time he’s learned the pro game, Tannehill could be 36 or 37 and with an expired contract.
Tennessee didn’t need to consult him, as this won’t affect his career at all.

Rodgers (MVP,SB,HOF)/Love(1st Rd) vs Tannehill(0)/Willis(3rd Rd)- not sure you and I share the same definition of “exactly”.

Agree 100% especially since the Titans were knocked down to a one dimensional team with the loss of Henry! And I’m sure Tannehill isn’t going to lose a seconds sleep over the Titans drafting a QB late in the 3rd round, especially one that’s no where close to being a starter in the NFL, it isn’t like they drafted a Burrows or Herbert caliber QB.

  13. I can’t believe there are actually Titans fans who think Tannehill is even serviceable at $29 Mill. And Derrick Henry is going to fall of a cliff – probably sooner, than later. Titans be Titans.

  14. He reminds who of McNair? People need to stop using hyperbole to make their point. Also, why would Tannnehill be hitting the bottle over a third round pick who is a project? If he is, Titan fans have way deeper problems. People also seem to forget he’s 33 years old not exactly a spring chicken anymore.

  15. Tannehill is the latest victim of the Joe Burrow effect. Tannehill’s performance in the playoffs against the Bengals made Vrabel decide to move on.
