Tyler Smith: I’ll fit in wherever Cowboys put me

The Cowboys have had Tyron Smith as their starting left tackle for many years and they took a player with a similar name with the 24th pick of the draft on Thursday night.

Tyler Smith played the same position as his new teammate while he was at Tulsa and Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said that the team believes he “can be our left tackle for a long time at some point in time.” That point in time is unlikely to be now and Smith is expected to work at both tackle and left guard as he begins his NFL career.

Kicking inside as a rookie would be just fine with Smith because of who he’ll be working with in Dallas.

“I’ll fit in wherever they put me,” Smith said, via the team’s website. “Being able to work with Tyron Smith, Zack Martin, Terence Steele and guys like that, it’s a dream come true. Those are true vets. It doesn’t get any better than that, and to be able to learn from them — first team All-Pro for numerous years — it’s a blessing to get to work with those guys.”

Smith just turned 21, so the Cowboys see plenty of room for him to grow as he acclimates himself to both life in the NFL and a new position on the field.

  1. “…Stephen Jones said that the team believes he “can be our left tackle for a long time at some point in time.” That point in time is unlikely to be now”

What’s unlikely is Tyron Smith staying healthy for 17 games.

  2. He will be put in a place to defend his mediocre QB, and his mediocre RB, as they strive for another mediocre year.

That is the Cowboys way and heritage

  3. You draft a day one starter in the first round, not a “project”. I can’t remember a dumber pick from the start than this one.

  4. Gotta love the haters! They have had there share of busts, but they have also hit the lotto quite a bit as well. Cowboys are polarizing. I’m not a fan of there team or owner, but I will admit I watch them when ever I can. And the owner is big time fan friendly, because he knows how he lines his pockets.

  5. Considering that Tyler was able to lead the FBS in holding penalties, he will absolutely fit in anywhere on the Dallas offensive line- the most penalized line in the league last year.

Yep, he can slide right on anywhere.

  6. Jerry Jones can’t seem to get out of his own way. Almost 30 yrs later after firing Jimmy Johnson…he’s still trying to prove he was the true architect, builder and sole reason for the success of those 3 Dallas Cowboys super bowl teams in the 1990s. Must be frustrating for Cowboys fans.

  7. I think Tyler Smith will have a decent career but I don’t think he’s a legit day-one starter although he probably will start because they don’t have any better options at guard. He will not be an upgrade over Connor Williams, at least not for a year or two. He shouldn’t have been a first round pick.
