Patriots draft QB Bailey Zappe

The Patriots have drafted a quarterback.

With the 137th overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft, New England selected Western Kentucky quarterback Bailey Zappe.

Last season had eye-popping numbers, passing for 5,967 yards and 62 touchdowns in a Western Kentucky offensive system that had him throwing a whopping 686 passes. Prior to his one season at Western Kentucky, Zappe put up very good numbers while playing against a lower level of competition at Houston Baptist.

The 6-foot-1 Zappe doesn’t quite have the look of an NFL athlete, but the Patriots think he has potential. With Mac Jones entrenched as the starter, Zappe will be in a training camp competition with veteran Brian Hoyer and 2019 fourth-round pick Jarrett Stidham in camp. Stidham may be the odd man hout.

  1. So you’re telling me they aren’t sold on Macs arm strength in that NE climate.

  2. Looks like Mac lost his job in that pathetic playoff performance. He never really looked the part anyway.

  3. The 6-foot-1 Zappe doesn’t quite have the look of an NFL athlete, but the Patriots think he has potential.

    —————–

Sounds like the second coming of Brady. Now they’re going back to the Super Bowl.

  4. After looking at the bad play of backup Qbs in the NFL , why not start drafting your backups at a lower price ?

  5. B.B., “I could tell you what we really are thinking, but then, I’d have to kill your press cred.”

  6. Maybe they’ll harvest his throwing arm and graft it on to where Mac Jones’s noodle is.

  7. Patriots do this all the time. As Michael Lombardi once explained it that backup QB is on average cost over $4M a year but a late round rookie is much less than that. Why overpay a backup QB when you have a cheap rookie and you can use the money for better roster. And if that rookie developed into something of value, he becomes a trade bait. (Or that rookie turned into the GOAT wearing 12!) They just keep replenishing it. Rinse and repeat. This has nothing to do with finding someone to compete with Mac Jones.

  8. Head-scratching pick. Way too early for a mediocre quarterback that the Patriots don’t need. Wasn’t there a speedy linebacker out there somewhere?

  9. He has great stats but who did he play against? This one is strange. The pats need D and they need it now.

  10. Smart pick up gonna need a long term backup with stidham on his last year and Hoyer isn’t getting any younger he’s more of a player/coach.

  11. Yet another QB who doesn’t need to cheat to be good. Good stuff. I’m glad the Patriots finally have QBs with talent instead of system QBs who everyone pretends is good. 👍

  12. Sure, they drafteda late 4th round QB from WKentucky to push Jones. Geniuses. I have news for everyone, this kid has no rocket arm either. Hoyer is at the end of the line and this is the last year of Stidham’s contract. Time to draft ant develop another QB, so maybe you can get something for him down the line. Was productive and has a great name though.

  13. Bailey’s stylye of play is similar to Mac’s, he’ll be a great back up. It never makes sense to back up your QB1 with a completely different Quarterback. If he’s special, all the better for him and the Pats.

I’m sure you thought the same thing as Stidham. You remember when he was also drafted in the 4th round.

What happened to Stidham being the man?
    —-
Dude was sacked 11 times against Clemson and all of them were on him. That kind of lowered the bar for me…

  17. A whole bunch of undersized players, some with speed and none for a position of need.

Somebody tell Bill the NFL voted down the idea of a 7 on 7 tournament.

  18. Guaranteed bust if you can call the 137th pick a bust under any circumstance. Lead feet and smalltime experience.

If Jones goes down, it’s Hoyer. It will take a lot of bad things happening for this kid to get a chance.

  19. Maybe they can cut off noodle arm and graph Zappes arm onto it. That’s what they need to do anyway. Drafting this kid shows me that they know Mac doesn’t have it. Just like the rest of the NFL knows.

  20. Huge Pats fan. I don’t profess to being a scout or a GM. I try to keep up on the needs and availabilities. That being said, I absolutely HATE the Pats draft. They get a pass because they hit a home run last year, even though they lost some brainpower. We’ll see in a few years, but it looks like an epic fail to me. Drafting 24/25 yr Olds? Running Backs? A 2nd rnd WR with tiny hands? Overdrafting everyone? Yikes.

Well like I’ve explained before, here is the difference between BB and Tommy.

BB stood at the podium with the country watching and like a man he owned it and took responsibility. He said it happened – which it did, said it was wrong – which it was, and said we would never do anything like that ever again. Like a man he took responsibility and so that was very easy to forgive.

All Tommy had to do was admit he had a scheme to deflate footballs – which he did, let’s be real, you CANNOT explain away those text messages sorry – admit it was wrong but he also did it because he did not believe the league cared about this stuff and he would have been right. That too would have been easy to forgive.

Instead he lied and smashed his cell phone. Now you tell me who should be respected and who shouldn’t. I already made my choice. For all we know Tommy is still cheating because that’s what cheaters do.

I will never acknowledge any of Tommy’s accomplishments. Ever. All tainted. * Sorry.

  23. I love how triggered the Cheatin Tom fan club gets when you call out their hero for being a cheater and a system QB. Tee hee 😀 Too funny!

I also love how they pretend Tommy is this humble person… being the same QB that publicly belittled the other team’s defense just before a Super Bowl before they embarrassed him in the biggest loss in the history of professional sports.

Don’t blame me, blame him. That’s who he is. That’s your boy. That’s your hero.

That’s why Joe Montana and Peyton Manning are loved and admired by football fans and Tommy never will be no matter how much you crave it. What a shame 🙁

  24. Remember that time when the Cheatin Tom fan club was talking all that trash that Tommy and his team would beat the Patriots by 70 in Foxboro last season?

They got the number right but that was actually his passer rating lololol

I couldn’t stop laughing at how shook how weak and pathetic Tommy looked in front of his old coach lol.

I guess Bill really is Tommy’s daddy lololol

  25. Bill will develop this guy and trade him to some dumb team and fleece them for picks, watch.

  26. GoodellMustGo, you must love having Tom Brady live rent free in your head. You post obsessively about him and are not even a NE fan.

Not to mention that the weakness is the defense. What is BB doing to replace Jackson?

  31. It’s in every teams best interest to draft a backup QB every year. It’s cheaper, they rarely play, they probably don’t suck if they have to come in for a few downs, or even a couple of games, and in the end, you get more value of it and they grow from watching a starter and getting practice reps.

It’s that or you just keep paying QB’s that couldn’t hack it as starters to hold the clipboard.

  32. They drafted QB’s with Brady entrenched as the starter. Why would they draft any differently with Mac? I’m not a Pats fan but wouldn’t be surprised to see BB get a 2nd rounder for Zappe in 2 years.

  33. Give it up with the cheating stuff. Everyone knows what that stuff was all about. Nobody cares. Time to find a new job.

I’m no Brady fan but here I’ll play the ridiculous stats game too.

Mike Tomlin has the same amount of super bowl rings as Bill belichik at the age of 50.

Mike tomlin is 1 and 0 vs bill belichik without Tom Brady.

Can you see how ridiculous you sound now?

  35. Not to mention that the weakness is the defense. What is BB doing to replace Jackson?

Like when they let Malcolm Butler walk? Who was JCJackson in 2018? An UFA. They just drafted 2 CBs. UFAs and more free agency to come. Jonathan Jones is coming back. They signed JMills, TMitchell and MButler. They traded for SWade. How did JC play against the Bills? Miles Bryant is improving. They’re loaded at safety. Let’s see what happens. One terrible game doesn’t tell the whole story.

“The only think DEFLATING sun is his passer rating”
    “Come on help the deflator”

Sorry man anyone who treats those texts as less than the smoking gun that they are is in denial.

It is what it is. And this is coming from someone who was one of his biggest defenders. I don’t like cheaters and I don’t like being lied to and made to look silly for defending the guy.

  38. The deflator texts were 1 time during the offseason, May I believe. Could been anything. The larger point is that the NFL never cared about air pressure until they tried to trap the Pats. At worst it should have been a 50k fine for equipment violation. Brady went out in the 2nd half and destroyed the Colts won the SBOWL and has won several more since. Just a meaningless trap by jealous owners that was taken up by fans of teams the Pats beat as an excuse. Those people should get on with their lives.

  39. I hear Zappe can throw passes that invisible unless you are a Pats WR.

    ++++++++++++++

Not sure how a defender knows when he should turn his head when he is chasing a WR going down field. You must know, right? Enlighten us, please.

  40. Can you see how ridiculous you sound now?

    ++++++++++++

My guess is that he has been a Belichick admirer for long time and is a well educated proud man.

That Belichick is about to be exposed as a garbage really hurts his pride.

  41. A defender knows when to turn his head when defending the pass by coaching and technique. I look forward to continuing this education on elementary FB.

Belichick could never win another FB game and still be a HOFer with his 8 rings. His legacy is in no danger.

  42. I don’t like being lied to and made to look silly.

Wanna know how to stop looking silly…?

  43. Tedmurph,

You still didn’t tell how he knew when to turn his head, by coach or whatever. I guess that you don’t even know that defenders REACT, so in general, he is a little bit slower than the WR he is defending.

Belichick took the credits he didn’t deserve. He was already in hall of being shameless when he took the credits for winning SB against Bills.

Just imagine if he doesn’t win another division title or being fired. He will forever be remembered as the one who shamelessly took the credits he didn’t deserve. That is why he has no choice but invest a lot on offense.

  44. Defenders don’t react. It’s too late then. They are coached when in the trail position, to watch a WRs hands and eyes to know when the ball is coming. That’s when they can make a play w/o being called for PI. If you don’t get your head around and make contact, they’ll throw the flag. Anyone that doesn’t understand this simple coaching point knows zero about FB.

A coach that wins 8 rings doesn’t get there by luck or taking credit. 1 maybe. Not 8. How many did Parcells win w/o BB? You can play that silly game all day. BB has the hardware…and the boat…and the compound on Nantucket…and every award and accolade known to FB coaching.

  45. Lol, common sense, OK?

When WR is about to catch and defender is 3 yards behind, it is already too late.

  46. If the defender is 3 yrds behind, you cut him because he stinks. Common sense right?

  47. It’s like someone in Nepal accidently caught an NFL game on his satellite and decided he’s an expert after watching his 1rst game.

  48. Lol, he stinks because he is not as good as Richard Sherman?

Watch MJ first INT. What happened to the CB who was chasing?

  49. For some reason, Western Kentucky games were broadcast where I live on multiple Saturdays in 2021, and I admit I became a fan. They were in some high scoring games and Zappe impressed with his consistency, resilience, and competitiveness. Hoyer is reaching the end of the line, and Stidham is in a contract year, and hasn’t played much, nor ben the defacto backup, so all things considered, adding a QB with similar traits to Mac for consistency purposes (not having to change the offensive tactics, style, and strategy if he has to play) isn’t a bad idea. He’s said to be very smart as well, so he may make a good QB room contributor. Not shocking they picked another QB in the 4th round. It was difficult for fans because of the odd nature of this Patriots Draft, and the thirst for big hype names, especially on defense.

    ================
There were exactly 9 QBs that threw a ball 40+ yards 10+ times last year. Both JAllen and MJones being underneath that bar (exactly 2 throws separate the two).

Jones ranked 11th and Allen 12th will throws 20+ yards last year (exactly 1 throw separates the two).

The longest throw from JAllen last year was 61 yards. Jones was 75 yards.

Not sure what point you are trying to make but it seems to be a bit murky at best. More so when you consider Jones didn’t have a WR even remotely close in talent to that of SDiggs.
