NFL teams have a strict limit on the signing bonuses that can be given to undrafted free agents. However, they’re not limited in the salaries or guarantees made to the undrafted rookies.

Some big guarantees have been handed out in the land rush following the 2022 draft. Leading the way, so far, is quarterback Carson Strong. He got $320,000 guaranteed from the Eagles, with $20,000 of that coming in the form of a signing bonus.

The Eagles also guaranteed $217,000 to cornerback Mario Goodrich ($10,000 signing bonus), $135,000 to guard Josh Sills ($10,000 signing bonus), and $110,000 to offensive lineman William Dunkle ($10,000 signing bonus).

Elsewhere, the Vikings gave a $250,000 guarantee to linebacker Zach McCloud ($25,000 signing bonus), the Saints gave receiver Rashid Shaheen $222,000 ($15,000 signing bonus), the Broncos gave defensive end Christopher Allen $180,000 guaranteed ($30,000 signing bonus), the Colts gave tackle Ryan Van Demark $175,000 guaranteed (no signing bonus), the Lions gave defensive lineman Obinna Eze $170,000 guaranteed ($20,000 signing bonus), the Dolphins gave offensive lineman Kellen Diesch $140,000 guaranteed ($20,000 signing bonus), the Dolphins gave cornerback Kader Kohou $130,000 guaranteed ($30,000 signing bonus), the Saints gave safety Smoke Monday $120,000 guaranteed ($20,000 signing bonus), the Cowboys gave center James Empey $110,000 guaranteed ($10,00 signing bonus), the Lions gave running back Greg Ball $100,000 guaranteed ($15,000 signing bonus), and the Lions gave tight end Derrick Deese, Jr. $100,000 guaranteed ($5,000 signing bonus).

Those are just the six-figure guarantees. Many other players received guarantees in lower amounts than that.

  1. None of those teams made the play-offs last year. Desperate teams need desperate moves.

  2. The Eagles DID make the playoffs. If you check each year the Eagles spend big time on undrafted free agent players. It’s Howie’s way of getting more draft capital at the bottom. I wouldn’t say it has been successful but it seems to be part of the draft plan. I don’t understand the $$$ for a player who, at best, rides the bench. I wonder if Minshew is in play?

  3. An expensive camp body but I bet he had multiple teams in the mix.

  4. 100,000 is peanuts on the lowest range, but I guess coming out of college it’s not so bad to someone who has nothing.

  5. Cameron Wake was an UFA, the Dolphins just might know what they are doing

  6. The New College recruits are making more money from NIL than what the NFL is paying.

  7. Kurt Warner, Tony Romo, Jason Peters, Warren Moon and Wes Welker were all UDFA

Chances are, none of these guys will get to those levels. But, there is value in UDFAs.

  8. If I was kid athlete with any football talent I would DEDICATE myself 24/7 just studying, conditioning, eating the perfect foods. My lord an average NFL athlete can make over 10 million dollars in 4 or 5 year career!!

  9. Chump change in the nfl. With that being said the kid has a howitzer for a arm and they dont grow on trees.

  10. the Eagles made the Playoffs lost to Tampa Bay in first round

The Eagles may not win the SB without Corey Clement. Set up the Philly Special with a spectacular catch and run, and participated in the Philly Special. Caught a td in his own right in the second half. UDFA’s can and do make a difference.

  12. The playoffs are watered down since the NFL adopted the NBA policy of letting half the league into the playoffs!

  13. I actually thought the Eagles would have had a belly full of guys named Carson.

Eagles and Cowboys both made the playoffs. But don’t let the facts get in the way.

All of these players are nothing more than organizational depth.

    Why not just draft him?

NFL minimum salary for 2022 is $705,000.

  16. I can’t get why everyone thinks the Eagles had a great draft because with the picks they started with they really kind of bombed. And AJ Brown is lucky to be a top 12 or so type of WR now. For those who do not know. … Carson Strong is a great snag for them. If anyone watched him and knows about his play he is probably going to be the best QB in this draft class. People say he is not very mobile but he has great pocket presence, strongest arm and best accuracy in this draft. Pro type system and he us extremely smart. Hurts will be gone next year.

Until they stop making NIL if they don’t “make it” in the NFL.

Most people think that because they….did. Jordan Davis is a monster. AJ Brown (via trading picks) and Devtonta Smith will be nasty together. Cam Jurgens was personally favored by Kelce, who will mentor him. Dean and Johnson at LB look to be undervalued picks who can shore up the defense. The former was graded a 1st round talent, but there were injury concerns that the Eagles believed were unfounded (we’ll see). The TE was worth a shot as a backup at least. He’s the only one that is a big question mark.

I do agree about Strong. I think he may end up being the QB that Wentz was supposed to be. He throws into NFL-sized windows and runs a pro offense.

  19. He was projected at one point to be a 1st rd pick but knee injuries derailed that. Potential is there for the kid, glad the Eagles picked him up as I would assume many others showed interest.

  20. With this year’s crop of drafted QB’s being very soso, Strong could easily be one of the one or two that make it to a second contract out of the entire draft. Worth the risk of money and besides the Giants (with one of the worst team with a grossly overpaid talentless roster) most teams do have a minimum cap threshold they are required to meet over a couple of years.
